Lazy Jacks, ARRRG!

Click to view full size image

Our wine will not last; we are down to just 3 bottles, ARRRRRG.

We are anchored in Lake Worth and will be in Stuart tomorrow.

I hate, I hate, I hate jiffy reefing and lazy jacks. I really miss the simplicity of sailing Namaste. We had a squall roll in and it started blowing 40 or so and I had to reef up the main quickly. Well I managed to put a hole in my main because the sail got sucked up into a block for the jiffy reefing along with the rope. I really do hate the way this boat was rigged. It’s all nice modern expensive stuff but I’ll take a simple rig any day of the week with a standard reefing system. I kind of have to live with it because of the size of the bimini, I just can’t reach the boom. I need to figure out a different way to reef and I really want to pitch the lazy jacks. The main always gets caught in them when I’m trying to raise it, or lower it.

Sam and Guin took a swim as soon as I dropped the hook, it’s becoming standard practice.

I’ll get a video up once we reach Stuart along with a bunch of photos.

 Peace everyone.

Key Biscayne

After dropping the hook yesterday in no-name harbor I launched the dinghy (Carly) and Guin, Darrin, Sam, and I rowed to shore. We walked a few miles to a pizza place and had a pie and a few pitchers. With bellies full and smiles we walked to the supermarket and bought fresh veggies for stew. We tend to eat a lot of veggie stew on Splendid. When we got back to the park where Splendid was anchored Guin laughed and chased large iguanas across the grass. After rowing back we all went for a swim with a large dolphin. He kept his distance but after we got out of the water he gave Guin a bit of a dolphin show, she loved it. I was asleep shortly there after and got a good nights sleep : )

I had a little problem with the starter this morning; it just seems a bit rough. I’m going to pull it in Stuart and have it re-built. We left Key Biscayne this morning around 7am, I got a late start.

Unfortunately we have but just a breath of wind from the east. The sun is already strong at 7:30am, and I’m sure it will be a hot one. I’m looking at arriving at Lake worth some time this evening. Tomorrow we’ll chug up the ICW to Port Saint Lucie and anchor up in Stuart.

Cheers all.

Sail far and live slowly.

3:30 Am

We dropped the hook about 8:30 last night on the S. side of Rodriguz key and I was asleep by 9pm. I got up to a very quiet and still world around 3:30 am, put on a pot of coffee, raised the main, and got the anchor up. After a few minutes of motoring I looked up and saw the tri-color lights (Nav lights) are out. I turned on the steaming light and put up an all around white. I’ll have to fix that ASAP.

It’s so quiet and peaceful this morning. There is no moon and it’s good to be at the helm and under way. Splendid is such a good boat.

I’m speaking to my buddy Jamie on the email. He is Australian and just completed his circumnavigation in a little 25, or 26’ Tophat (Possibilities). He is thinking of coming to Florida to look for a bigger boat to continue on. I told him about all the deals to be had in Florida and he may come for a visit. If anyone knows of a great boat with a hole in the side or something that needs a good fix’n and is cheap, let me know.

Anyway, I’m going back to my dark world. The screen from my laptop is burning out my night vision.

Cheers.

Alex

Move’n on

Well we didn’t get going yesterday. Darrin came to Boot key and we all went out for Pizza and pitchers (sorry JD).

We’ll be out in a few hours and I’ll fire up the spot if you want to see the progress. Try clicking on the satellite imagery, it’s cool.

We may stop in Byscane or not, it depends on how we feel and the weather, I’d like to make it to Lake Worth.

It’s a really hot day and unfortunately it looks like it will be dry all day from the radar. I like an afternoon squall or two to cool off and take a shower.

Peace everyone.

Pooooooo!

It’s been one of those days.

We had a really bad odor in the head and after a short inspection I saw the selector valve for the holding tank cracked in half, pooooooo!

I got a new valve at west marine and proceeded to cover myself in the contents of the holding tank. We got pumped out this morning but there was still a gallon or so floating around. I found myself sitting in a 95 degree head covered in poop, with my tools scattered around. I got to thinking, ‘got to be a bright side rite”, and there is. Sam and Guin get a non-smelly bathroom and a good ship to sail upon.

Well I’ll be 44 tomorrow. I hardly have a few bucks in the bank but I feel like the richest guy in the world. Sam and Guin are happy, Splendid is…, well, Splendid, and I’m living the life I want. I have to bust my ass every day for it but what the hell right? I could be busting my ass for someone else.

I think we are sailing North 2morrow afternoon. I’d like to take off with Darrin but he has a boat project or 2. We’ll meet up in Stuart. I want to be sailing on my birthday.

I’m off to the Dockside bar & Grill with Sam and Guin for a cocktail.

Live is good even covered in pooooo.

Guin

Click to view full size imageWell, I don’t really know what to make of Guin.

I was really expecting her to be seasick, crying, and uncomfortable, oh contraire, she likes Grandma Splendid rocking her. Like “rock a bye baby” she says.

We are on a mooring in Boot Key harbor. The city has taken almost the entire harbor and made it a mooring field so nobody can anchor. That’s progress I guess.

We will be her a day or two getting laundry done and visiting with Darrin. His boat got ransacked while he was gone and a bunch of stuff has gone missing. After that it’s up to Stuart to see my buddy Chuck before continuing North.

Peace everyone.

Alex

Drunk’n sailor

Well we spent our first night at sea. We had very mild wind from the South East until about midnight, almost nothing. I was on my watch when I saw a sail boat to the West. He didn’t go away and almost seemed to be heading towards us, and it was. The boats running lights were showing red and green, meaning he was heading our way. Well it proceeded to circle us and I tried hailing it on the radio, no response. After a few hails and a few maneuvers it was on our same tack about 400 feet off of Splendid’s starboard side. He finally answered and reported the boats name as “pack it up” and continued to sail very close. He told me he was on his way to Fort Myers. I told him he’d need to turn around to get there and he was heading South East. Very strange behavior for another sailboat, I don’t really know what to make of it.

It really started blowing (25-30) after midnight and the sky to the East was full of lightning. Guin and Sam slept through it all. I got Sam up at 2:15am for a shift and she was at the helm until 5:30. All in all a peaceful night at sea. It’s still blowing and we are about 25 miles from dropping the hook . The sun just came up a bit ago.

I picked up an AT&T air card before I left and signed up for their cellular Internet. That is how I can be a bit off shore and post an update, cool eah? The bummer is it is my first and only bill since I left in 2003, arg!

I’ll have video and pictures up soon.

Peace everyone.

Under way

Well, I have some news. At 1:57 pm on July 8th, 2009, The good ship Splendid has set sail for a life on the sea. I’m a bit speechless. Sam and Guin are reading books as we chug down the Caloosahatchee river. Check the spot if you have a moment. I’m going to look for an anchorage down by the beach tonight, perhaps Picnic Island. Sam and I have to do some stowing and cleaning up before we leave in the morning for the Keys.

It’s a bit hard for me to put my feelings into words at the moment. Sam and I have worked so hard for this.

Thanks for all the support.

Alex, Sam, and Guin.

The 4th “FREEDOM”!

Click to view full size imageJust one more day. Sam and I will be leaving Tuesday morning. We’ve had a garage sale for the last 3 days and have been tying up all our loose ends, we’ll Sam’s loose ends (house, car, etc). I don’t know that I’ve had a loose end for quite some time :) It looks like July 7th 2009 will be Sam’s big date. Speaking of dates I’m cringing at the fact I’m turning 44 on July 14th. Why oh why do the birthdays keep coming. Actually I think I’m doing all right! I’m really happy I’ll be cruising again on my birthday, and I feel like a hell of a lucky guy!

All I need to do on my end is change a racor filter and go to the dock for a pump-out and a water fill. Sam and I need to take a few hours to do some stowing. We are bringing a bunch of stuff from the house to sell on eBay. Mostly vintage dresses. Monies tight so we will be living as lean as possible. I’ll be looking for some work up in the Chesapeake, I’d like to make a few bucks before we take off South in November.

Kerri is going to install the last of the dodger & sides tomorrow. It looks like we will be nice and dry for all the squalls, YEHAAAAA!

Want to hear something totally AWESOME? We haven’t run a generator or the engine for a week. We are totally living off of solar power. It’s such a good feeling having such a soft carbon footprint in the world. Sam’s tickled. If I can just start sailing everywhere and rowing the dinghy we wont be using any fuel at all. We wont have a car anymore and will be riding our bikes from now on. I’d actually like to get a pair of blades, Sam has some. We are also looking for a 2 person Kayak.

The weather looks good. I think we’ll have SW wind until I make the u-turn around the keys. After that I think we’ll be getting some good sailing done.

Peace, Love, and lots more Love.

Sail far and live slowly.

New Video!

Click to view full size imageGuin sez “Watch the new video”!

Go to the members tab and scroll down to “BlueSphere TV”. On the scroll bar on the player, scroll right to log #8, it’s about 16 minutes long.

Man I’ve been fighting with the new video for 2 days with uploading issues. I think I have it all down now.

WE ARE LEAVING MONDAY MORNING!!!! Sam and I are having a garage sale on Saturday and going to watch the fire works Saturday night and finish up installing the canvas on Sunday.

Watching this video I realize how many good friends I’ve made here in the last 18 months, however it is finally time to set sail.

Cheers.

Motley crew!

Click to view full size imageYou guys like my crew?

I’ll be uploading a new movie tonight or tomorrow, it’s a long one, about 15mins. It covers a bunch of fun stuff!

All is good and we are ready to leave. Guin is even asking if we are leaving every day, she seems really excited.

The canvas should be done by Friday and we will be leaving on the 4th, I think it’s appropriate.

Man is it nice to have the solar panels going. I’m not even getting close to over charging and getting the full output of the panels. However I will install the new controller at Chuck’s house.

This is like starting all over again. Leaving Mystic on Namaste was such a big deal for me. I’m so excited I can’t sleep at night. Sam can’t sleep at night either but it’s more from stress. She is wrapping up so much in her life and this is really pulling the big plug. I was so stressed the days before I left the dock in Mystic. Wild questions ran through my mind. Where will I anchor or dock tonight? What will I do for money? Where will I go? I’m sure Sam is asking herself the same questions but I know she believes in this in the pit of her soul. Guin is really excited to visit “horsey island”. I don’t remember the name of the island but I told her we will be stopping in Beaufort (NC) where there is an island with wild horses. She talks about it often.

Well guys, I’m off to finish the video. I’m also going to try and get a news letter out.

Cheers.

Charge controller

Well the solar panels are hooked up without a controller and are doing fine. If anything I wish I could over charge the batteries to equalize them but they just aren’t putting out enough. One certainly needs a controller if you don’t live on your boat and watch the voltage all day like I do.

I did however buy a controller today. I went with BZ products MPPT500 (http://www.bzproducts.net/) This controller will allow me to expand my solar system to 45amps, and input my voltage @ 24 volts which makes for a more efficient system. The controller will bring it back down to 12 volts and convert the excess voltage to amps. I’m having it delivered to my buddy Chuck’s house, so I should have it in a week or so.

Sam and I are pulling our hair out trying to get out of here. There is so much to do and we are soooooo CLOSE!

I’ve plotted my course to my buddies house in Stuart. We will sail down to the keys and go through at lower Matacumbe Kay. There is a 65′ bridge there. Then we will sail up the east coast to the Lake Worth inlet and go up the ICW to Stuart for a few days.

The weather is not optimal to sail south at the moment anyway so a few more days wont kill us.

Peace everyone.

Sail far and live slowly.

Electromaax

Click to view full size imagePower, Power, Power!

I’ve installed a 130 Amp Electromaax alternator. That coupled with the solar panels will give us plenty of juice!

I’ve had the alternator for about to 10 months and finally took the 20 minutes to install it yesterday, what a difference. If your looking for a quality, high-output alternator check out electromaax by clicking on the link to the left. I did a lot of research on alternators and went with these guys. You can get a “delco” style alternator pretty cheap but they run really hot at high loads and don’t last all that long. I don’t know if you guys remember but I had to have Namaste’s rebuilt a few times in S. America. Speaking of Namaste, check out the picture below. She is getting new canvas and paint as well.

I really did have a love affair with that boat. It’s hard to believe I sailed her half way around the world. My eyes almost teared when I saw this picture on the email this morning. Sam just asked if I will ever love Splendid like that and my reply was “it will take a lot of miles”. I hope to sail her again one day. I’m sure Wojciech would let me as soon as we make it to Australia, or perhaps we will meet up in Europe. He will be sailing her to Poland.

Today I need to finish wiring up the solar panels. I’m not going to use a charge controller. I did the math and looked at the battery specks and I find it really hard to believe that I could damage the batteries with the load from 2, 120 watt solar panels. If I were to leave Splendid for any length of time I’d shut them off.

I’m hoping to be out of here by Friday. We are just waiting on the rest of the enclosure and to button up a few things at Sam’s house. She has a HUGE record collection that we need to pack up and bring to a friends house.

I’m really excited about moving again.

Peace everyone.

Solar, Solar, Solar!

Click to view full size imageWahoooo, I finally have my solar panels mounted!

I have about double the amount of wattage I had on Namaste.

I’m not so happy with the mount but it works. When I can afford it I want to have tube bent to fit but I have bigger fish to fry if you know what I mean. I still don’t have them wired, but the hard part is done :)

Sam painted the galley and it looks great.

Anyway, I’m off. I just wanted to get some pictures off this morning.

Peace, Love, and Solar power!

Bimini

Click to view full size imageWe have bimini…, And it is soooooo wonderful!

Canvas work is really an art. The Bimini enclosure expands Splendid’s living space immensely. This week the dodger and sides will be done and we are off like a shot. I’m going to do sail covers at another time, we just need to get moving.

We had a really nasty squall roll through the anchorage the other day and it blew 45+. A bunch of boats drug (we didn’t), and the wind felt quite tropical. It’s been really hot lately, and “hot” fuels tropical weather conditions, I want nothing to do with it. Frankenstein (our Manson Supreme) held like the monster it is. I’ve come to the conclusion that I need a bigger windlass. It really doesn’t do so well getting the pick out of the mud. I need more power with a manual backup, it will do for now though.

I finally have the fuel tanks topped off, ouch. I really need to get the solar panels hooked up. On the bottom picture you can see how I’m constructing the solar panel mounts. I’m just using stainless jaw slides, cap ends, and 90’s to make a frame on top of the bimini. I’d rater have the stainless tube bunt to better match the contour of the bimini frame but I’m using scrap tubing and don’t have bits long enough. It’s a bit “boxy” looking but works for my budget. I’ll have 2 130wt panels up soon. As soon as I can afford it I’ll get 2-3 more along with a wind generator.

Well guys I’m off to work on the boat.

Sail far and live slowly.

Cheers.

Poor Sam :(

We went to the dentist and Sam needs a root canal, ouch!!!

After a bunch of negotiation, calling around, and estimates, we are getting it done for $610.00. Not so bad. Even in Panama its $400. I’ve never had a root canal, I hope it isn’t too painful for her.

The new Bimini is going on today and we will be fitting the sides. Our new departure date is on Wednesday with new tooth, bimini, and dodger.

I’m spending $100 every time I bring my 7 cans of diesel to the Sunoco. I also spent $140.00 yesterday on hardware to mount my solar panels on top of the bimini. I’ve made the mistake in the past of buying non-stainless hardware before and found it only lasted about 3 years.

I also got my SSB back yesterday and am excited to install it today.

I so dream of the sea with my girls :)

Sail far and live slowly.

Alex

Party :)

What a great party we had. Jim, the owner of the store cooked some great pig and played guitar for us. He had written some custom songs that brought a little tear to many of our eyes. When he stopped Guin started crying and he had to do an encore. In the last year Sam and I made some really nice friends here. We has 25-30 guests attend.

Our canvas isn’t quite done and we are pushing our next departure date to this following Saturday, depending on weather of course.

We will sail down to Marathon, go under the 7 mile bridge and head north up to the Fort Lauderdale inlet. After that we will chug up the ICW to Stuart to hang out with my buddy Chuck for a few days. After that it will be off shore to Beaufort N.C. then up the ICW to the Chesapeake. I’m really looking forward to sailing Palmico sound and the Chesapeake. Darrin may even follow us up there.

Sam and I are provisioning and getting our ship together. It’s all so exciting.

One thing we really have to do is find Sam a dentist. She needs a new crown and onlay. It’s crazy how expensive dental work is. I wish I could bring her to my dentist in Panama. We are looking at about a grand (With Insurance), what is the point of paying for insurance? Stuff like this makes me crazy sometimes. We really do need a better healthcare system.

Anyway, enough of that GRRRRRRRRRR

Head cut off!

Click to view full size imageWell, I’m running around with my head cut off attacking projects. I do this before any trip, it’s just part of it.

Sam scraped and repainted the library, it looks nice. The other picture is our friend Kerri who is doing the canvas. Check out the color of the new sunbrella, I LOVE IT!

I still need to fix/swap the alternator. I want to put my new 130amp Electromaax in but I’ll have to re-wire the whole thing as it has so much more amperage. The wire from the old alternator is quite small, I’m thinking it’s about a 40 amper??

We are having our send-off party tonight at the yacht basin. Our friend James cleans boat bottoms and has offered to clean up Splendid, thanks James. That’s one project I don’t have to deal with :)

I went to 4-5 shops yesterday looking for yellow diesel jury jugs. What is up with the new fangled jugs???? I cant find a normal style spout? The only jugs I could find that are the old style are the blue ones for water. They are all made out of the same material and I think I’ll just go with blue for diesel. I’ll put yellow rescue tape on them for identification. Jury jugs are a strange things. The designs keep getting worse. I think it’s all fueled by lawsuits or something. The new spouts look like an accident waiting to happen.

I bought some line yesterday and I need to rig the windvane today. Man I hope it works. Sailing with a windvane instead of an electronic autopilot is such a nice experience.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and the Chesapeake!

Blue Room

Click to view full size imageWell Guin really wanted to color in her room so Sam, Guin, and I went to Home Depot to choose a color. I think it came out a pretty nice blue. Sam spent a few days prepping and painting, so she should get all the glory. It’s funny, we have had a few discussions about color. I want the interior tan and classic, but she is determined to put some color in my life and make it more of a home, it’s good :)

I got the rebuilt motor for the windlass yesterday and will be installing it ASAP. I’m waiting for my SSB to come back from the shop, it had a defective mic.I also need to swap out my alternator as it is not putting out much power. I have a nice 130amp Electromaax in a box, but I’m saving it for the small Generator (4.5 HP Kubota). I don’t think I’ll keep the new generator as a generator. I want to put on the 130amp alternator, and the clutch/compressor for my refrigeration system. I don’t really need 110 on the boat, and I have a good inverter. I’d like to have a small Honda 2000eu as a backup in a lazerette. It would also be good for beach parties.

I’m really getting excited about taking off with the girls. I have all the Coast Guard recommended safety equipment up to date as well as a very cool Viking life raft. I’ve never had one before but it really is a nice piece of mind. If you want to watch a video on how it works, click on their logo on the upper left.

Sam should have her own log up in a few days so you don’t just need to read my dribble.

Well I’m off to do projects and get to gett’n things done.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

– Alex

Computer

Wahoo, got my computer fixed, I’m back online :)

All is going well. We should be starting the new dodger and bimini on Saturday. Our friend Kerry has been finishing up a few big jobs and we should knock it out quickly.

Today I’m going to rig my windvane. I need to get a few blocks and guide 2 lines from the stern of the boat to the wheel. I’m really excited about having a windvane. I hate watching the batteries as I’m traveling with the autopilot. At some point I’m going to want to hook up a small tiller pilot to the windvane for conservative amp draw.

Sam is excited about our trip North and I’m going to be able to see my sister in Georgia, and cousin in the Chesapeake.

I’ll also get a new video up in the next few days.

A friend of mine is doing a walk for brest cancer and is trying to raise some money. If your interested please visit her page by clicking here.

I really appreciate all the support in the logs, it really means a lot.

Cheers,

A journey of heart!

I’m hoping June 14, 2009 will be to Sam and Guin what May 10, 2003 was for me. We have a date and a game plan. Splendid sets sail on the 14th.

I really want to be in the San Blas but I’ve been under pressure of getting Splendid ready and waiting for Guin to finish the school year. It was really important to Guin’s father that she graduated from her school and after seeing her excitement during her graduation I see that he was right.

Sailing to the Rio Dulce kind of breaks my cruising philosophy as it is against the currents of the sea and weather. I just haven’t been to thrilled with the idea, It just doesn’t feel right.

If you knew me you’d know that I’m a bit of a sentimentalist. Things matter to me and I look for the signs and pathways in my life. If you have been hanging around projectbluesphere.com for any length of time you know I can’t make plans. Well, I can make them but I just don’t necessarily stick to them. The winds in my life change, and so does my path. I now have two beautiful women in my life and we have to find our path together.

When I came back to the states I came back for a number of reasons. Foremost, it was the cheapest place to look for boat deals and secondly, …it was the cheapest place to go looking for a boat. Typically I enjoy living and cruising out of the country, but for the moment Splendid is going on an interesting journey. A journey of “heart”!

I don’t know how many of you know, but Sam was adopted 2 days after being born. She was adopted by a wonderful family, many of which I consider good friends now. I’m especially close to her father, Big Mike. Sam became interested in finding her biological mother in her mid-teens. Big Mike had some contacts with the kind of agencies that knew how to find people. He found her and Sam and Karen were introduced shortly after. She spent a few months with Karen (her biological mother) and continued a somewhat distant but loving relationship until she passed away about 6 months ago.

Sam and I were talking about health and genetics the other night and I asked about her biological father. She told me that she never met him but knew his name. She also told me that she didn’t think he knew about her. I asked if she was interested in finding him and her response was “well.., of course”. I know Sam and she is not really the intrusive type and would probably never go looking for him.

I decided I really wanted to find this man and started looking while Sam was at work. I scoured the internet, made a ton of 411 calls and spoke to a lot of men with the same name. I finally ended up hiring an online “people locater“ and got a solid hit.

Well long story short is I found him and sent him an email. I knew it was him because he still lived in the same town as he did 35 years ago but he wasn’t listed with the phone company. I didn’t want the whole thing to blow up in my face, nor did I want anyone to get hurt. I felt as if I was walking through a “mine field” of emotions but I knew I was doing the right thing for Sam and perhaps her biological father. However, I wanted to speak to him before Sam did to be sure he was a stand up guy. I gave him my number in the email I sent and he was quick to call back. It turns out he didn’t know about Sam and I think I really blew his mind. All I can say is ‘ what a nice guy’…, really! He was sooooo interested and open. They both want to do a DNA test to be sure but he seems really excited about the possibility of having a 33 year old daughter and being a grandfather. And from my perspective, how could you not want Sam and Guin in your life!

Lets roll back a bit… After I found him and had this conversation I went to go see Sam at work. She’s a bartender and was kind of busy at the time but she knew something was up with me and took a few minutes to have a chat. Well.., I really dropped a bomb on her when I told her that I just had a half hour conversation with her biological father. She was so excited and a bit freaked out.

The following day Sam spoke to him and it all seemed to come together. I must admit I was crying hearing her have this conversation in the other room.

I’ve decided to sail to Philadelphia to introduce Sam to her biological father as a family. As you know I had been considering sailing up the east coast for the hurricane season anyway and I’d like them to spend a little time together before we leave the country in November with our friends Chuck and his family. Chuck has two boys on his boat and it will be especially good for Guin to have the companionship.

Well that’s it guys, we are leaving Fort Myers on the 14th to spend our lives together. Sam’s car is going up for sale today, we’ll be ordering Guin’s kindergarten from the Calvert school shortly, and cutting the “proverbial” dock lines.

I’m such a happy man.

Sail far and live slowly.

one of those days !

I’m having one of those days.

I was painting the box for my new fuel polishing system and splattered paint on Spledids newly painted bow as well as in some wet varnish. I got pissed and decided to write a log and my computer “bit the big one”. Now I’m on Sam’s computer trying to figure out damage control. AHHHHHHH, I hate COMPUTERS!!!!

Anyway, I got a Racor 1000FH filter and a fuel pump to match its 180GPH Capacity. I built a box so I can go mobile with the whole thing and polish fuel.

I know Splendid’s fuel is pretty bad and I’m hoping to start polishing tomorrow. I’m going through racor filters pretty fast, and as most of you know, 90+ percent of diesel motor issues are fuel issues. Clean fuel is a MUST for your injectors and high-pressure pump.

I also received my little lunch box welder and tried it out yesterday, I can weld off of my gas generator, pretty cool. It just needs 20 amps to weld, how cool is that.

I’m not in too much of a mood to write. I’m really upset about my computer. It just locked up and died, ARRRRGGGGG!

I need a new laptop!

A friend sent me a really cool link to a blog of a boat in the Rio Dulce, check out http://www.indigomoon.us/

Cheers

Guns VS Sewing machines

Click to view full size imageI’ve received a few emails after my last log asking about guns and cruising. I don’t really like talking about the subject but here goes.

First of all I don’t consider myself a “gun person”. I try not to manifest the “negative”, however I am a “realist” and as a captain have a responsibility to protect my ship as well as my crew. I am the sort of man who would use it if I had to. If you’re not that sort, never carry a weapon! Reason, personality, and common sense are far better weapons than firearms.

When I left on my trip in 2003 I had a 9mm handgun. I would say that most American cruisers leave the states with some sort of firearm. The rest of the world’s cruising community does not and cruises unarmed.

I claimed my weapon in the Bahamas and Jamaica but not after that. I went through a real hassle in Jamaica and would not allow the police to take my weapon. I asked them to leave, I was prepared to hoist my anchor and leave the country. I explained to them that I was the captain of my ship and my side arm was properly locked in the ship’s safe and that I had the only key. In the end they embezzled a bag of apples from me and put a sticker around Namaste’s safe warning me “not to crack the seal”. My response was ‘If I crack the seal, I’m sure you’ll hear about it’.

I never claimed my handgun in Colombia or Panama, nor did I ever have the need for it. I once took it out as I was approached by fisherman wanting to sell fish. For some reason I didn’t think “fish” were under the tarp in the front of their boat. That could have been paranoia, or not, I’ll never know. I ended up selling my gun in the San Blas to a very paranoid man (x-cop) and his family. They were on their way to Colombia and he growled “I will not go unarmed”! My response was ‘if you are so afraid of pirates, perhaps you should not bring your family”? He offered me 3 times what my gun was worth and I sold it to him. I never carried a gun again and proceeded to sail half way around the world. I was happy not to have it.

Now I’m burdened with the question of carrying a gun again. If I was to sail alone my immediate response would be “No, I don’t need it”. However, I have a family now and I’ve had to rethink the question all over again.

Cruisers know where the potentially bad areas are. We all talk over dinner and drinks, and chat every day on the SSB nets. Cruisers all over the world communicate over the SSB (Single Side Band) radio so we are very “in the Know”, when it comes to such topics. If you’re a single handed sailor on a small boat I would say “don’t carry one”, you really don’t have anything that “Pirates” want. They surely wont steal your sewing machine :) The Pirates we have all been hearing about are hostage situations on large ships, and they are looking for millions of dollars. Not a walkman or video camera.

Mace is a popular tool that cruisers carry. Muggings do happen all over the world and it seems to be a good deterrent. Personally, I don’t think giving up the few bucks that we would have in our pockets would warrant macing anyone. We live in a country where we let murderers, rapists, and child molesters go if they have enough money for a decent attorney, OJ being a good example. Child molesters, rapists and murders don’t make it very far in most other parts of the world, especially South and central America. It’s not the courts they have to worry about, but their peers. There have only been a few incidences of murder amongst the Kuna throughout their history. If a Kuna kills another Kuna their punishment is to be buried alive on top of their victim. Needless to say there is not much of that sort of thing going on.

Will I carry a gun? That’s a good question. I have put a motion detector in Splendid’s cockpit so I will not have any surprise visitors. That being said I lived in Colombia and Panama for years and never had a surprise visitor. I did have my outboard stolen once and that is about the closest I’ve come to “Pirates”.

Sam and I are currently exchanging emails with a mother of a 5 year old boy in the Rio who has been raising her son there for a few years now. She has lots of good advice and if we go there Guin already has a play mate.

Will I carry a gun? I really don’t know. At this point I can’t buy ammo for the gun a friend gave me. A shotgun, and a hand gun are good tools to have for hunting. I would have liked to have had a rifle in Polynesia to hunt pig, instead I was stuck shooting chickens with a sling shot. Polynesians are big hunters. I would like to do some more hunting.

The truth is, I don’t know guys. I’m leaning to carring one because of the family. I suppose it is better to have one and not need it, than to need it and not have one? My theory is, if your going to carry one, carry a big one, and whatever you do don’t get yourself in trouble with it. The funny thing about life rafts is people usually get them selves into trouble with them. They abandon their ship for the life raft when they are panicked and afraid. The ship in usually fine. I guess my point is, if your going to carry a gun, don’t carry it out of fear. Think of Annie Hill or the Pardies. These families have been cruising around the world for decades, like thousands of others. My point is, if you don’t have common sense, don’t go cruising. A good Sailrite sewing machine is much more important of a tool than a gun.

I hope this answers your questions.

Peace, Love, and Sailrite, what a great machine :)

Contemplation

Click to view full size imageI’m going mad with charts & cruising guides.

Sam and I have been waiting for Guin to finish her school year and she graduates tomorrow. Guin is excited about sailing and talks about it often. Sam will also be starting her in Kindergarten soon (home schooling with the Calvert school). My friends Chuck & Leslie will be taking off with their 2 boys (4&7) and will be home schooling as well. It’s all quite exciting.

I’ve been studying and contemplating hurricane season. It’s important not to be in it! I found some cool info on Wikipedia, and wanted to share it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_hurricane#June

I hate the sailing route from Key West to Panama. Not to mention crossing the Gulf Stream, there will be contrary currants (1-2 kts) to well past the Caymans through the Yucatan channel. From Here to Panama I’m looking at a few solid weeks at sea during hurricane season. I’d much rather sail the windward passage (Eastern tip of Cuba) but there is just not enough time in the season. I’ve been thinking of sailing North, up the East coast as well and doing the Chesapeake, and possibly Maine for the summer. There is another option however.

I’ve been thinking of sailing to the Rio Dulce (Guatemala) for hurricane season. The Rio is the major place where Northern Caribbean sailors wait out the hurricane season. It is well inland and protected by high cliffs and mountains and is up a river and in a lake. There is lots of cool Mayan stuff for us all to explore, and probably some good history lessons for Guin. I have a friend there and he tells me there are a bunch of Cruising families and plenty of friends for Guin. I could also be there in 4-5 days out of Key West. The only issue with getting into the Rio Dulce is getting over the sand bar and into the river. Luckily “Splendid” only draws 4.5 feet, and could probably make it over the bar at mean low tide.

Oh yeah. Click on the Manson anchor to the left and check out the video from L&A TV.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Cheers.

Time

Time for sailing South is getting thin. I can feel hurricane season knocking on the door. I still have a few more weeks work but feel comfortable leaving at the end of June or early July. I left Jamaica in early July and had a nice run to Cartagina back in the day. I will leave the girls here and have them fly south, it’s just too late in the season. I’m toying with the idea of sailing up to the Chesapeake to visit family until November. If I did that I could get a fresh start South in December and do the Virgins and eastern Caribbean. I kind of missed all that the last time I sailed South.

The material for the new bimini and dodger came in yesterday so we should be starting on that project shortly. I also took the windlass apart and sent the motor in to Ideal to have it rebuilt (about $400.00 ouch!!!). I inspected the windlass closely when I took it apart. Basically it has a main gear that resides in an oil bath which is connected to a shaft that turns the gypsy and capstan. It all looks to be in perfect condition. The windlass is over 30 years old, as well as the electric motor. My thinking is with a rebuilt motor it should last another 30 years, time will tell!

I also sent my SSB back to SEA/Data Marine to get fixed. It stopped transmitting after I found a corroded ground in Namaste back in Tahiti. If you key the mic on an SSB with no ground you blow it, I believe that is what I did.

The next 7 days in Fort Myers look to be polluted with squalls, thunder, and lightening. Not the best conditions to be working in but I feel quite confident in our new anchor. We have renamed her D.R. Frankenstein. Sam’s vote was for Diana, mine was for Frankenstein, and Guin wants to name everything “rainbow”. So we came up with Diana Rainbow Frankenstein. I think we’ll call it “Dr. F”, or “the doctor” for short?

I’ve also invested some of my money. I didn’t make as much as I had hoped on the last job and It’s going to be gone quickly. I’m spending it as wisely as possible. I bought a small inverter welder on eBay, as well as a diesel transfer pump and large Racor filter (1000FH). I’ll be able to weld stainless on the go as well as have a mobile fuel polishing system. I cant tell you how often I find people stuck somewhere with fuel problems, or a broken “something” that needs to be welded.

Sam and I will also be learning sewing, zippers, and sail repair in the upcoming weeks. These are all important skills to becoming a “self-sufficient” cruiser. That was the whole point for me moving up to a larger boat in the first place. On Namaste I just didn’t have room for the tools I needed, storage for mass amounts of dry and canned goods, and the real-estate for the solar cells I want to be able to live off of. I will be mounting my 2 130watt panels on top of the new bimini. When I get the money I’ll buy 2 or 3 more, as well as a good wind generator. Splendid is also a hell of a lot more comfortable :)

Well guys, I’m off to working on the boat. What else is new right?

Cheers.

Peace, Love, and Freedom!

Diana

Click to view full size imageMeet Diana!

Is that an anchor or what???

We named the her “Frankenstein” when we first saw it but have changed her name to Diana, like “Diana Ross and the Supremes”. Sam drove Splendid around the anchorage as I fumbled on the bow with the anchors, shackles, and swivel. When I dropped “Diana”, and we backed down on her I almost ripped the bow off. It doesn’t “Plow” through the mud like a CQR. It just SET!

My windlass seems to labor a bit and as soon as I can upgrade, I will. I know trust for an anchor is developed over time and conditions, but I must say I’m going to sleep just a little better tonight knowing I have the “Mamma-Jamma” of anchors down, especially with these squalls rolling through all day :) It blows like hell sometimes.

Peace, Love, and Manson anchors!!!

HOLY SHIP!

The 80LB Supreme is HUGE!!!

Many of my friends use the 60lb Supreme and say it will eat a 60lb CQR for breakfast and ask for seconds. Of course I want over-kill because of the way I travel. With a bigger anchor, I’ll sleep better, and will not freak every time I’m at a restaurant and a squall rolls through. The 80, is actually 85 pounds and looks as if it would hold a 100′ ship without a problem. Sam and I have fondly named it Frankenstein. It looks quite big on the roller but I’m sure it will hold the 3 of us safe in heavy conditions. I’ll get pictures and video of it before we launch Frankenstein. I LOVE IT!!!!

Well it took me 26 hours form Marathon to Fort Myers. I had great wind when I left and had splendid moving along just under 7 knots with all sail up. I kept the motor running (in neutral) because I’m trying to burn off all of the 8 year old diesel but I was surprised at how well she handled. I got hit by a few pretty hard squalls off of Cape Romano. I don’t have a wind speed gauge but I’m thinking over 35kts and mixed with some pretty big hail. I didn’t get a wink of sleep as I don’t have my radar installed and couldn’t set a perimeter alarm. It would have been nice if Sam could have taken a few hour watch so I could have got some “shut eye”.

I’m sitting her writing this log eating “Spicy Dilly beans” and drinking a home brew beer, thanks Dean. Maybe we can chat on the phone? I want the recipe for the “dilly beans” and beer. Here is a home recipe for Kahlua:

HOMEMADE KAHLUA

3 c. sugar 1 qt. water 10 to 12 tsp. instant coffee 3 c. vodka (buy most inexpensive) 3 tsp. vanilla

Simmer sugar, water and coffee for 1 1/2 hours. Cool and add vodka and vanilla. Put in bottle. Ready to drink, but will get better with age. OR:

2 c. water 3 1/2 c. sugar 2 tsp. vanilla 1/5 inexpensive vodka 6 tbsp. freeze dried coffee

Boil water in large pot, add 3 1/2 cups sugar and boil 5 minutes. Add vanilla. Dissolve coffee in 1/2 cup water and add to pot. Pour in vodka. Makes 2 fifths. This needs to age at least one month.

I really believe in taking the time to make, repair, restore, and recycle. It’s good time too. Some of the best times Sam and I have are making home made tortillas, cooking, making wine, or working on Splendid.

Peace everyone.

Lets all take the time to make our lives fuller!

good wind and big anchors

hey all- sam here. I’m writing in lieu of alex as he is en route and connectionless. Alex would like to point out that he has dusted off the old spot so you can track splendid as she makes the now somewhat familiar journey back to the fort. Last we chatted he had successfully traversed the shallows and is now footloose and fancy free in the open water, full sail but motoring still as he wants to finally burn through the old black fuel.

And speaking of anchors.. Arriving back to the house yesterday was a bit like xmas. No sooner had i unbuckled guinna from her carseat, she was bounding across the yard shouting “Our new anchor is here, our new anchor is here”. I turned to look and there, sitting on my stoop , was a most epic anchor. An 80 lb manson supreme, definitely formidable and certainly not messing around. I think alex might finally have the peace of mind he’s been searching for in ground tackle. Also on the stoop was a care package containing homebrewed beer, some delicious looking wine, scrumptious golden amber sweet yummy hometapped maple syrup and even a jar of pickled dilly beans (thank you dean!)

I am ordering the canvas today and work should begin at the start of the week.. look forward to some new bluesphere video..

peace, love and epic ground tackle:) sam

To Splendid or not to Splendid?

Well I’m off to Splendid today. I need to clean up and get off the dock before I need to pay more money. I’m going to cross back over the southern tip of Florida (SHALLOW) between Marathon and the Gulf, and back up to Ft. Myers for a few weeks to get my canvas done. Then I’m off ASAP! There is a new fly in the ointment though.

A friend called and asked If I could deliver his boat from Brisbane Australia, to Thailand. I’m talking to Sam about it now. We would have to the end of the year and He’d cover expenses. It’s not a money making thing, but he has a beautiful boat “Contigo” and it really would be a cool trip. The dilemma is I’d have to leave Splendid though. I’m really torn. However I’m leaning towards getting Splendid done and moving on. The idea of just going to the other side of the world and sailing for a few months really appeals to me. We could do the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Micronesia, and Thailand, ARRRRGGGGG! Man that sounds like fun. I’m going to think about it over the next few days. Splendid is ready to sail I just have so many projects…, I want them all to be done. It’s going to take me years to get her where I want her, but when she’s done, WOW!!!

Come on guys, give me some input here. Do I take 3-4 months to deliver a great boat for a friend, or do I go back to busting my ass on Splendid???

The videos and photo gallery on the site may be a bit wonky over the next week. David and I are doing some upgrades.

And remember if you have any Grolsch bottles (flip top style) laying around don’t toss them.

Cheers

– Alex

Manson Supreme!!

Well I ordered 300′ of 5/16 bbb chain and it’s being delivered to me on Splendid on Monday. I didn’t have enough to order my new anchor ($785.00) and have to wait until I get my next paycheck. I checked eBay and craigs list…, no Supremes at all! There are plenty of CQR’s, Bruces, and so on for much less. I even found a brand new 80lb CQR for $500.00 but passed on it. I quite serious about the Supreme.

Well I decided to contact Manson anchors in New Zealand ( http://www.manson-marine.co.nz/SitePages/Supreme.htm ) to see if I could get a discount. They got back to me ASAP and we struck a cross-promotional deal and my new anchor is being delivered on Monday. I’ll be advertising for them and getting underwater video of the Supreme digging in in various seabeds, WOOT! Check out their video too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVoYc0dL124

Now I’m looking for an Engel refrigerator. Our refrigerator died months ago and I’m not going to pay a guy $80.00/hr ($1,400.00 total) to screw up my system again. I’ll have the big system fixed in Panama for a reasonable cost. I think we will end up using the Engel full time though because of its efficiency, it can easily run off of our solar panels and we want to live 90% + on green power. I want the Engel MT17 ( http://www.engel-usa.com/mt17.htm ).

Sam and I met with Kerri the canvas girl yesterday and came up with our colors and a game plan. Our enclosure, bimini, and dodger will be a nice brass/tan color finished with black & black zippers. The sail covers and jib cover will be black to match the “not yet painted” black boot stripe and black netting between the deck and life lines. It really is amazing how much work I’ve done in the last 14 months. Splendid will truly be “Splendid”, and a wonderful home and charter boat.

Hey…, does anyone have a bunch of empty Grolsch bottles they want to sell? I’ve decided after my port wine is done cooking I want to knock out some beer for the bilge. I want to buy/find/drink about 5 cases of the Grolsch bottles.

Hope everyone is well. I’m starting to feel like my old self again.

Peace, Love, and Manson anchors!

– Alex

Love!

Click to view full size imageI didn’t have to get up to an alarm this morning, just two beautiful girls and a lavender purple bear that I got for Guin in Vancouver. I must say I’m feeling better, Love heals quickly!

By the time the job was over 80% + of the crew was sick. The supervisors say it happens every job though. I spent a lot of time working on the round table in the center of the wine shop (see photo), and I also spent a bunch of time working on the stone in the other picture. I really had a great crew. Jake was supervising the wine shop crew and Keith, RJ, Jimmy, Darren and I were the crew. Rebuilding the Golden Princess Atrium was quite an experience. I can’t say that I was always happy about it, but I feel comfortable saying I did a good job and I’ll work with MSC (http://www.mscor.com/english/00/00_01.html) again. It’s really amazing what we accomplished in just 3 weeks.

Check this out:

Now read it backwards, cool eah???

Today is reserved for Love, Kissing, hugging, smiling, laughing and Pizza.

Peace everyone.

I’m DONE!!!

I’m going HOME,HOME,HOME,HOME,HOME!!!!!!!

I changed my flight from tomorrow night to tonight (5/4/09) I have a bunch of lay-overs, but I’m out on an Air Canada flight tonight, and should be in Miami before 10am in the morning. I’m so Excited! I happy the job is done. I’m really tired and have totally lost my voice. I saw the doctor again yesterday and she put me on a Z-Pack of antibiotics. I’m feeling better today but really drained. I’ll spend a few days in Ft. Myers with Sam and go to Splendid on Saturday.

These last few days of work have been hard. People have been irritable as well as myself. I’m sitting in the Explorer lounge waiting to go to customs at 6pm.

I’ll get out of my slip by the 10th and start heading back to the Ft. Myers area to get the canvas done. We’ll be in that area for a few weeks then we have to figure out where to go. Hurricane season starts July 1, but for all intensive purposes August – October are the months to avoid.

I don’t really know what my plans are but I’m sure they will unravel shortly.

Cheers everyone.

Sail far and live slowly.

– Alex

Home!!!

Well I went to work today and managed to drag myself through it. At the end of the day I ended up sicker then when I started, my chest is in really bad shape, I’m hacking up evil things. I pulled myself out of the extra 2-3 weeks of extra work today. There is just no way in hell I can do it, put a fork in me, I’m DONE! I want to be home with Sam and get back to the beautiful life that we have. I spoke to her last night and she said all I needed to hear “Baby…, come home we have enough money”. I’m so excited to go home I cant see straight. It’s true, we do have enough money. I cant buy the water heater, or the parts to the water maker that I want to build, but I most certainly have enough. I’ll probably go home with 4 grand in my pocket and that is a hell of a lot more than I’m used to having around. Guin is done with school at the end of May and Sam will start home schooling in the next few months. We are going to get to start cruising now!

I don’t have much energy to write so I’m going to crash now. I’m flying out at 9pm on the 5th, flying all night, and arriving in Key West at 1pm the next day. It all seems so brutal at the moment. Oh yeah, I have 9 hrs to burn in the airport in Vancouver, ARRRGGGG! I’m going to try and upgrade/change my ticket at the airport that morning.

The road home seems so long at the moment.

Peace, everyone.

– Alex

Sick

There is a virus going around the ship. I’m on my second round with this thing but it’s really kicking my ass this time. After being at work for 2 hours today I couldn’t even hold up a caulking gun. I had to go to the infermary and back to my room. I hate laying in my room not being able to work, I’m blowing a day of overtime, ARRRGGGG!

If you guys want to see photos of the “Goldern Princes” dry dock and refit, check out http://www.princess.com/goldendrydock/

Cheers everybody.

Heart Broken!

I signed up for the extra work today (AHHHHHHHHH!!!!). I’ll be staying until the 15th – 20th ish???? Well it’s not confirmed but I think it’ll happen. When I got back to my room I started looking at pictures in my camera and I must admit tears came to my eyes when I look at the pictures of my new family. I really do love them so much! It’s funny. I sailed half way around the world alone and never got lonely. Now I’m stuck on a ship with thousands of people and I have a very heavy heart. I don’t know how I’ll make it through the next weeks of 12 plus hours a day, seven days a week, and without my people.

One cool thing is the “Golden Princess” is sailing for Alaska and I’ll get a chance to see it, I hear it’s amazing. The other cool thing is I’ll have a bunch more money for the kitty. As soon as I get back to Florida I’m sailing back up into the Gulf so that Sam’s friend can give Splendid a new suit of canvas (Dodger, Bimini, sail covers, and so on). I’ll be ordering my anchor, chain, and parts for a water maker. I may get a wind generator as well, we’ll see how the money turns out at the end of the trip. I do know I’ll be taking Sam out for a romantic dinner and sharing a bottle of wine. Speaking of wine. Sam started cooking our first batch of chocolate port last weekend, my fingers are crossed.

I don’t even know what day it is. I dread the 3 alarm clocks in the morning (5:30am), and I cant seem to get into a rhythm until after lunch, the mornings hurt.

I’m so touched at the comments on my logs. I have so many friends that I’ve never met, and people who really seem to care. I don’t know what Project BlueSphere means to people, but all I can say it’s magical for me. I rally hope Sam will start writing her own log, as well as Guin as soon as she can manage. My hopes are for it to become a “family adventure”.

Peace everyone.

Sail far, Love, and work your ass off for what you want!

– Alex

Still working

Words are hard to come by as my mind is a bit mushy. An opportunity to stay and work for an additional 3 weeks came up, but I passed. I miss home and my girls so much I cant see straight. I’m slated to come back on the 5th but people are saying they are going to let some of us go early. I know I’m going to regret passing on the work as soon as I start thinking about all the things I want for Splendid, but I cant think at the moment, so that’s cool. The good news is I feel confident that this company will call me for work in the future. I feel that I’m doing a good job, not to mention the fact that I’m learning a lot.

Cheers everyone. I’ll post some pictures when I get back

– Alex

Tired

Wow am I tired, I’m soooo happy though. I’ve been flat broke and trying to get ready to sail to Panama. Most of all I want new chain, an 80lb Manson Supreme anchor, and a few grand stashed on the boat. I know I’ll get some of you guys to visit for a charter or two once Splendid is anchored in the San Blas and under way, at least I hope so.

My days are long and the work is hard but I’m really happy with this job. I’m working on the “Golden Princess” and building the new wine shop. In panama Sam and I can easily live on $15.00 a day, and that’s what I’m making an hour (more with over time). That’s what keeps me motivated, especially through a 17 hour day of grinding, welding, or jack hammering. The company I’m working for is really awesome! I couldn’t ask for a better crew or people to work for.

I just checked my email for the first time today. I had to go to the purser’s office to buy an internet card. The connection is horribly slow and expensive. I haven’t had any time to do anything but work & sleep.

I’ll write more as soon as I can. I’m planning on bringing my camera to work tomorrow to get a few pictures. It is an amazing site to see a 951 foot (18 level) ship in dry dock. I’m AMAZED how big this ship is, it’s a city. Although I must say I’d rather be at sea. It was nice to look off my balcony and see the sea passing by as the was coming up.

I cant wait to be home to Splendid and my girls. It’s really hard to be away.

Sorry if I don’t make much sense.

Peace, Love, and hard work!!

– Alex

Namaste

Click to view full size image Well I’m off in the morning to work for 3 weeks. I’ll be returning to Splendid and my girls on the 5th of May, ARRRRGGGGG, I’m really going to miss them!

Namaste has been undergoing a paint job at the same time as Splendid. I’m glad she is sitting on the other side of the world sailing in the southern hemisphere. I hear her prop got all tangled up in a fishing net a few days ago. She looks happy and Wojteck seems to be good to her. I really miss that little boat. We had such adventures and good times together.

A new chapter is open in my life and my smile is long. Life is good to me and I feel quite blessed. The 3 weeks ahead of me seem difficult. I’m such a home-body and don’t like leaving my place. It’s a good thing my home can sail otherwise I’d truly go out of my mind. As soon as I get back I’ll be sailing again. I’ll have a few bucks in my pocket (Man I’ve been broke) and I’m planning on getting 300′ of 5/16ths BBB chain and a 80-100lb Manson supreme anchor as soon as I get back. I also have to deal with my diesel tanks, they are dirty. I may need to cut them open and give them a good scrub. I’m also going to build a mobile fuel polishing system so I can help other cruisers out if need be. Dirty fuel can be such an issue and difficult to deal with in remote areas.

I’m bringing my laptop, I hear I can buy WIFI cards on the ship, and will attempt some updates. They may be scarce however I hear I’ll be working 12-15 hours a day.

Peace everyone.

Sail far and live slowly.

No more Key West

Click to view full size imageI’ve been really uncomfortable with the mooring situations in Key West. The guys at the city dock/moorings are not very nice and don’t seem to care about anything, or anyone’s boat. Boats drag, and that is just not the place for me to put my home, everything I own, and my future. I inquired about a slip at “safe harbor” (Stock Island) and it was $680.00 for the month. I can understand why they want so much money, it’s Key West right, but I don’t understand why they wanted me to pay for 2 months (680 x 2) as I’m leaving from the 15th to the 5th (3 weeks), so greedy! Every slip I’ve got in the last 25 years would pro rate my stay. I decided the vibe in Key West was diminishing. A friend called and said they had a slip in Marathon for me for $250.00. I was off like a shot. I put the girls to bed and got up at 1:30am Thursday morning and did something wonderful. I raised the anchor with my new electric windlass, WHAT A TREAT!!!! After raising the main under a full moon we ghosted out of Key west into the Atlantic.

Sam and Guin slept like babies. I woke them up just as the sun was rising and full moon was setting. Their smiles were long. A pod of big dolphins decided to come and really make Guin’s morning and play at the bow wave for a while. Needless to say the girls enjoyed the trip and we arrived in Marathon mid-day. It was a tight squeeze (shallow) getting back to where the slip is, but we are snug as a bug in a rug. I feel very comfortable leaving our home here.

Darrin and I will be working on a ship between LA and Victoria B.C. It will be nice to have a few bucks for Splendid once I get back. I need a bunch of stuff!

Can you see how nice the front of the cabin house looks in the picture. If I had a month to sand and paint Splendid’s entire top sides would be done. She will be such an awesome boat!!!

Cheers.

Sail far and live slowly.

Paint

Click to view full size imageI painted 1/3 of the cabin house yesterday. It still needs some detail touch-ups but I’m going to leave the trim and detail to Sam. I’m just no good at that sort of thing. I’m starting to see Splendid and my beautiful home as she will be.

Looking at this picture over coffee this morning really got me thinking. My life has been so Amazing in the last year. I haven’t been cruising, but I’ve been building. I have a new home and family. I haven’t seen Guin for nearly 3 weeks and Sam has been commuting 10 hours round trip to spend a day with me each weekend, it’s been tuff on the heart. Well the girls are back with me until I leave for work on the 15th and it’s hard to explain how beautiful of a morning I’m having. It will be hard to go to work for 3 weeks but it is what it is. At the end of May I get to take my peeps cruising with me and I must say I’m waiting patiently.

I haven’t really been putting my feelings into my logs because I know it’s hard for Sam’s ex to read, but I hope enough time has passed. I want to get back to putting my days into words, pictures, and videos. The last year has been a big transition for me and hard at times, but hell, anything worth while is worth a bit of blood, sweat, and tears right?

I feel like a very fortunate man this morning. Life is good.

Peace everyone.

Summer

Click to view full size imageIt nice to be in a place sharing the water with beautiful ships like this. I took this image yesterday of a passing schooner at sunset.

Summer is here. The cold fronts and 40 degree weather seem to be behind me, YAHOOOOO!

I’ll be leaving Splendid for 3 weeks for work starting on the 15th and will return on the 5th of May. As soon as I get back I’m going to buy a few things, install the diesel generator with my buddy Chuck, and beet feet for Panama. If Sam and Guin don’t do the trip with me they will fly in once I arrive. I cant wait to share the San Blas with them, “what a magical place”.

Darrin is doing some final fairing on Splendid and we are going to get some painting done this week. What a HUGE job this has been! When you think about it though, I’ve managed to buy a beautiful 40′ sailboat, put her together, and go cruising in 14 months. That’s not so bad. There are 2 other 40′ Cheoy Lee Midshipman on yachtworld.com, you should check them out. “What a nice cruising and charter boat they make”. It’s hard to believe that I paid what many people pay for an average used car. However I’ve done a little calculating and have invested a good $62K in man hours, and about 8k in materials & equipment.

As soon as I leave here I’ll be starting work on the 3rd DVD in the BlueSphere series. Well…, I might take a few months off to shoot fish :)

Cheers everyone.

Sail far and live slowly.

windy

Man has it been windy. It’s been blowing 25-30 from the N-NE for a solid week. The dinghy rides have been wet and the anchorage lumpy. All that being said I’m certainly not complaining, it’s nice to be here.

I’m mostly finished with the “windlass” project. It all seems to be fine but needs a little tweaking. The chain is supposed to be 5/16ths BBB and I’m using proof coil. If I hold a 2×4 against the chain as it is being raised it flows through the gypsy smoothly. I have the feeling that if I raised the windlass the chain would flow better. Is the windlass supposed to be at a higher angle? I’ll have to look into it further. For now it is good!

I’ve been installing my SSB. Splendid came with an old ICOM but I’m installing my SEA, and trying to use it with the ICOM tuner. I’ll have to call ICOM tech support today. It is receiving fine and I’m going to start getting weather fax on a daily basis.

Life is good in the Keys.

Peace

Click to view full size imageHere is Splendid as she sits in Key West. I’ve got the mizzen up to battle the current and point into the wind so I can sleep at night.

I spent the day running cable and wiring the windlass. Chuck, you were right, it took more than a day. We are supposed to have about 20kts of wind for the next 4-5 days and there is no protection in Key West. I may be stuck on the boat until it cools off.

Believe it or not I’m still getting used to sailing a big boat. I’m really dependant on the windlass (or the lack of one) and I don’t have as much control as I used to have on Namaste. On Namaste I could “Man handle” everything. I could get by without using a winch, windlass, and could get the anchor up and “scoot” quickly if I had to. With Splendid I need to be a bit more cautious of where I anchor and who I anchor near. Different hulls react differently to wind and current conditions. That is why I have the mizzen up, I point more to the wind like a fin keel boats around me. I’m going to build a riding sail as soon as I come across the material.

I can’t tell you how nice it is to jump off the boat and go for a swim every morning.

Oh yeah, I sell rescue tape now. It really is amazing tape (self amalgamating silicone). If you don’t have any on your boat you really should. I use red and black on all my electrical connections, white on my rigging, and clear on all my pluming. Click on the link to the left and check out their site. You know me, I’m not a real commercial type sales person, but rescue tape really is something everyone should have on their boat. I really do believe in the product.

Peace everyone.

Key West

I feel good in my soul!

It’s so nice to be in a real cruisers community again and out of the dirty river in Fort Myers. I met a lot of good people in Fort Myers, but I must say it wasn’t my favorite place in the world and I’m happy to be moving on.

Chuck and I spent all of Tuesday working on the diesel generator with no avail. We got it started for a moment and that was it. We spend half the day tearing it out of the engine room along with the old water heater. We both agree the rings are shot. Chuck is bringing it to his house to open it up and take a peek. It is a really good, one cylinder, Kubota diesel. With a rebuild it should provide power for many years to come. I was thinking I would sell it as I’m all about simple ships and systems, however it only uses 1/4 gallon of diesel an hour as opposed to my main engine which burns closer to a gallon an hour. I don’t really feel like maintaining and servicing two diesel motors but it is surly the “green” and cost effective way to go. I don’t plan on using much diesel as I’m really going to deck Splendid out with solar power and a wind generator. I’m also planning on using the wind vane as much as possible and living with out refrigeration unless we have a good stock of fish. I can deep freeze the freezer with the compressor attached to Splendid’s main engine in a matter of a few hours.

Chuck’s family came to pick him up day before yesterday and spent the night. Chuck and his wife Lesley went out on the town while I stayed home and watched his two great boys Zack and Brice (4 and 7). We had a good time watching movies.

Sam and Guin are still in New Jersey (Happy Birthday Guin) she just turned 4, Darrin’s girl friend is visiting from Canada and I’m drinking coffee by myself for the first time in a long time. It’s kind’a strange and quiet.

I have a bunch of projects to knock out before I leave for a 3 week job in April. I need to wire up the windlass, install another bilge pump, do some wiring at the helm and about a hundred other things. I am planning on taking the rest of the week kind of slow as I’m feeling pretty “tore up” from giving Splendid all of my energy.

I’m going to the dive shop today to price a spear and new bands for my gun. I hear there are a few good spots to shoot fish around here. I’m flat broke but I just may have to fork up the money for a fishing license. I think it’s inherently wrong to make a man pay to shoot his own food, but what the hell, “when in Rome”, right?

I don’t think I’m going to fair and paint Splendid until I’m in Colombia and can hire a few guys to sand, sand, sand! I think I need a break!

Peace, Love, and Spear fishing.

– Alex

Soooo happy

Wow,

What a gloriously uneventful trip!

I left Fort Myers beach about 10am on Saturday and motored for a solid 27 hours. We had 10 kt head winds for most of the trip but at about 2am I set the jib and motor sailed under full sail until sunrise. I could have cut the engine but I really wanted to push it the entire trip as a shake-down. She worked flawlessly! The motor held 2000 rpm’s @ 170 degrees with solid oil pressure and puuuuurrrrreeeddddd like a kitten. Splendid also felt good under sail and I worked out a few rigging issues. When we got to Key West I really wanted to continue to Colombia as I had well over 150 gallons of fuel. I LOVE THIS BOAT!

Darrin left a few hours before me but I past him and lost radio contact. I’m expecting to see him in the morning.

Chuck and I anchored and went ashore for the “sunset celebration” and I had a mojeto, “yummy”. It’s spring break and all the freaks are out, its fun.

Cheers everyone, I’ll get pictures and video up soon.

Did you check out the “SPOT” link?

Hoisting anchor

Click to view full size imageWell I’m off to Key West tomorrow. My buddy Chuck will be making the passage with me. Sam and Guin will be going on vacation to New Jersey for Guin’s 4th birthday, and not making the trip, I’m really bummed.

Splendid’s glass work is done, however she is far from fair. Darrin and I painted all the glass work with mopoxy (epoxy paint) which we are using as primer. Splendid is white. I’ll be fairing and painting in the Keys and beyond.

Splendid is now the owner of a 4-person, off-shore, Viking life raft. I’ve never owned a life raft before, but what a nice piece of insurance. It will get stowed in a lazerette and hopefully never touched until it needs to be inspected in 3 years. It really is an amazing piece of equipment. Check out Viking by clicking on their link on the left side of the page. If Splendid sinks and I need to deploy it I’ll be looking to get a haircut, apartment, and a job, yuck!!!!!

Man I have a bunch of work today. I need to clean, clean, clean, install my winches, cleats, and the starboard track. I also need to visit West Marine and a few other places. Sorry I cant chat more. Did you see the new video?

Peace everyone.

– Alex

Double time!!!

I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck and beaten up by a team of ninjas! My back and neck are killing me. ARRRGGGG, I feel like I’m getting old! Darrin and I have been busting ass to finish the cabin house, toe rail and decks by next Friday. He has a friend flying into Key West on the 15th. We will be heading down there late next week, I actually might get the sails up for the first time in the not too distant future, and I think I’ve earned it. The trip to Key West is an over-nighter and takes about 24 hours.

I’ll be in Key West until May. I’ll have to leave Splendid for the month of April as I have a job, but after that I’m planning on visiting Cuba to write an article and document it for my next film. I’m applying for permission this week, thanks Chris. After that I’ll visit the Caymans before heading back down to Cartagena. I’m going to build a hard dodger and Bimini in Cartagena, haul out, and paint the hull. After that I’ll be off to the San Blas for some spear fishing and R&R.

I still don’t know if I’ll go through the canal again or head north and cross the Atlantic for Europe. Europe is a much faster track on finishing a circumnavigation but I really don’t care so much about that any more. It’s much more important to me to travel to the places I really want to see. Sam and Guin haven’t seen the Pacific and I sure wouldn’t mind doing it again. Who knows…, “where the wind blows”, right?

Refitting Splendid has taken a lot out of me. My energy is getting thin and I’m really looking forward to my Keys trip. I hope everything works well! It will be the initial shake down cruise and should tell a lot.

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend.

Sail far!

– Alex

No Cheoy Leaky

Click to view full size imageSplendid’s Cabin house is totally encapsulated! There is no more “cabin to deck” seem. She is really ugly and messy with epoxy but if I’ve learned one thing about this job it’s, “Paint goes on fast and it’s all prep”. There is about 40% of the toe rail that needs to get glassed and we still need to fair and put the starboard jib track on. I made this picture of Splendid big, so if you click on it you’ll see it in some detail. She will be a really beautiful boat, wont she? She is going to get a black sheer stripe from the rub rail up, black netting on the life lines, rat lines, and I’ll dye the sails tanbark. I’ve decided to make a hard dodger and bimini when I’m in Colombia. Actually it will be more of a pilot house. Next time I cross the Pacific, or any ocean for that matter, I’d like to be out of the wind and rain. Speaking of wind and rain, We have another cold front approaching tonight, ARRRRGGGGG!!!!!! I threw out another anchor yesterday as the currents and opposing wind can get nasty and brisk.

I was cleaning up in the engine room the other day and took a look at “Splendid’s” diesel generator again. When I bought Splendid I tried starting it and all I managed to do was flood the heads with water. I emptied them, filled them with oil, and forgot about the project. I looked at it again a few months ago and broke off the water pump as the pulley and mount were poorly constructed and made from aluminum. The motor actually looks perfect and the hour meter only reads 315 hours. I grabbed the fuel pump and it disintegrated in my hand. Well I’ve decided that it’s in good shape and I’m going to fix it. I bought another fuel pump yesterday, and I’m going to run an electric water pump to it. I’ll eventually fabricate another belt driven (mechanical) water pump, but for now, I just want to get it going. If I can get it to run well I’m going to put a hi-output alternator and water maker pump on it and use it as my primary charging. I’m sure it is a lot more fuel efficient than my Perking 4108. Actually my solar panels will be my primary charging, but if I have to run the motor I’d like to burn 1/4 GPH, as opposed to 3/4 an hour.

I’m still scouring ebay and Craig’s list for a used radar mount for my mizzen and 5/16ths bbb chain for the new windlass. Money is really tight but it’s all working out. Splendid will soon cross oceans and Project BlueSphere will be on the road again. It’s been a long year!

Peace everyone.

Depth

Click to view full size imageWell I finally got my fish finder hooked up. I used a “in hull” transducer that shoots through the hull with out having to put another hole in the boat. I’ll probably put a normal transducer in the next time I hall out so I can get water temp and speed info. But for now I’m happy to have a depth sounder. I decided to go with a fish finder because I can see bottom density and determine the best way to anchor. I’ve also put shelves in my pantry and closet in the shop. Ship is getting done!!!

I need to move my fluxgate compass for the autopilot. I was never able to get a compass deviation and therefore I still have not calibrated, or used my autopilot. I’m also running NMEA info from the fish finder and GPS to the autopilot computer. Work, Work, Work, when to I get to leave!!!!!

I’m thinking of going to Caya Costa (spelling) in a week to work/relax with the gang (Sam, Guin, and Darrin).

Peace, Love, and Fish Finders

– Alex

Somewhere else

Wahoo!!

We spent the first night anchored in a horrible anchorage, Shell point. There was a few feet of crushed shell ground over shale. I couldn’t get the hook to set and only slept an hour and a half with north winds of 15 – 20, dragging me across the anchorage.

We arrived in Fort Myers beach this morning and after running aground a few times I’m hooked into the anchorage in some decent holding. I just figured out where to find some wifi, don’t know who’s it is but I’m happy to have a connection. Splendid’s motor (Perkins 4108) ran like a top. I like it soooo much better than Namaste’s Volvo MD11-C.

Anyway, I’ll report more in a few days.

I can’t wait to get a good nights sleep.

Peace everyone.

– Alex

Moving

I’ve really been busting ass the as few days (as usual). When I bought Splendid I didn’t really see how much work needed to be done but I’m still happy I bought her. It will be soooooo worth it in the end! A year is a small price to pay for such a fine ship as Splendid. Painting will take longer than I thought, so here is my new plan. Darrin and I are going to finish all the fiberglass work. This entails encapsulating the entire cabin house and toe rail. We still need to mount the starboard jib track and fair everything. I’m going to cover the new glass with primer and call it a day, well…, for the moment. I’ll continue painting and finishing as I go.

We are moving down to the beach in the next few days. I hear that the cops really hassle people down there and don’t let a boat stay very long. This is a really unfortunate aspect of cruising in Florida. Everyone (city’s) seem to think they own the bottom of federal waters and think they can strip American sailors of their federal rights. It makes me so mad!

I’m thinking of heading to Key West in a few weeks. I’ve been having a real hard time sitting in Fort Myers. Sam and Guin will join me in the keys for a few weeks for vacation. They will have to return as Guin’s father wants her to finish the school year, and will keep them here till late May.

Anyone have any recommendations for a battery for my windlass? Should I use a starting (cranking amps), or a deep cycle battery? I’ve heard a few different views.

Peace everyone.

– Alex

Getting closer

My new foredeck is almost done.

I’ve installed 2 new cleats, re-positioned the old one, and dry fit the windlass. The bulwarks and foredeck are painted but I still need to non-skid. Darrin is almost done glassing the port side of splendid and we are working hard while we have some nice weather. “Splendid” and “Alas” (Darrin’s boat) will be moving down river to the beach in a few days. It will be nice to be closer to the Gulf and sailing, man I can’t wait! When we leave I will calibrate the autopilot.

I’m still knee deep in projects but I think I’m over the hump. I still need to rig the wind vane, but once I do I’ll feel really good about Splendid’s self-steering system. I still want to find, and fit a small tiller pilot to the wind vane. This will be very useful in light wind with a low amp draw. In most situations I’m planning on using the wind vane (Gina), and will treat my new Raymarine S3 as a backup. I’m sure most people would treat it as a primary means of self steering but I’m going to try and live over 80% strictly on green power. I still want to buy 2 more 130 watt solar panels (I have 2), and a wind generator which I will fit to the mizzen. I’d also like to have 12v refrigeration so I don’t have to burn fuel to freeze the holding plates.

I’m so excited I can’t see strait. I’ve been refitting in this river for a year now and I’m pulling my hair out. Once we are at the beach I’ll do some “shake down” cruises in the Gulf and take advantage of some of the surrounding cruising grounds before heading south.

I’ll have pictures and video of my new bow in a few days.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

– Alex

The cold wind blows!

Did everyone see the new video? I can’t tell how people know about it. I know a lot of people have an RSS feed on the log page, but I don’t know if that works for the videos too??

Well I got the first paint on Splendid’s bulwarks day before yesterday. All I can say is “WOW”! I’m really happy with the Mothane (Mobile paints). It has a really hard and durable finish. As soon as the weather breaks I’m painting the foredeck, installing two cleats, installing the windlass, a foot switch, and the spigot for the wash down pump. Darrin will be laying glass and I’ll be finishing and painting behind him. I need to figure out all the wiring, battery installation, breaker, and switches for the windlass.

I really hate this weather, it interferes with my work! That being said I believe in the world around me. I may not always agree with the direction it pushes me, but I do if you know what I mean. The wind is blowing a steady 25-30 kts and the air is cold. Tonight it is supposed to be in the 20’s. Thank God for propane and diesel heat. Cold days like this are baking and cooking days on Splendid. For lunch we had home made hummus and pesto on home made bread. It was really good. Tonight we are baking brownies, and having Darrin over for a pasta dinner. Sam and I have 6 lbs of blueberries and strawberries in the fridge waiting to start a batch of wine but it is just too cold. It needs to be over 70F to start the fermentation process.

I’ve really been yearning badly for sailing lately. My buddy Gary on “Plan B” called me from Mexico today. I really miss my cruising friends as well and keeping up on the SSB radio I miss it sooooo much. I’m really looking forward to sharing it with Sam and Guin. I’ve been too long in this place and I feel like I’m getting soft.

Anyway. My friend Buddy forwarded me the following words by John Masefield:

“Sea-Fever”

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

John Masefield (1878-1967). English Poet Laureate, 1930-1967.

The wind will turn soon.

Cheers everyone.

fordeck

Man have I been busting my ass. My fingers are raw from wet sanding but the bow is almost done! Darrin is glassing down the port side of the cabin house and I’m faring, priming, and painting.

I’m also starting to install the windlass which came earlier today. Things are really coming together.

Anyway, I’ll have another video uploaded soon.

Peace everyone.

A big piece of the puzzle

Click to view full size imageWOOT, My auto pilot is finished. I’ve been working inside during the cold fronts and I finished the autopilot project. I still need to mount the control head, but it reaches to the cockpit and works just fine. I wanted to get a navpod so I could have the control head mounted on the rail at the helm, but they are way tooo expensive for what they are. I’m trying to figure out an alternative.

I hope the cold breaks soon so Darrin and I can work outside again. I’ll be testing my new Magellan GPS/Email communicator. It should be activated today.

Also, if anyone knows where I could find a used radar mast mount let me know. I have to mount the dome for my Raymarine SL72 on the mizzen.

I’ll have a new video posted soon.

Peace everyone.

Click to view full size imageMan, I can’t tell you how happy I am. I’ve really been stressing the windlass thing. I finally found the one I wanted at the right price ($350.00). The seller also had 265′ of 5/16 BBB chain to go with it for an additional $300. This is exactly the package I wanted, yeeeehaaaaa!

I can’t stress enough how important a good ground tackle system is! Basically it’s a cruisers boats insurance policy. If you’re going to over kill anything, this is a good place to do it. I’m going to install this windlass, chain, and my 60lb plow on the starboard roller. On the port roller I’ll have my old manual windlass, chain, and I’m thinking a big fortress anchor. I also have the 45lb CQR that came with splendid and a good danforth witch I’ll use as a stern hook. If I can afford it before I take off I’d like to buy a 60lb Manson Supreame as my primary hook. If anyone has this anchor, please comment.

I also need to ship the chain from California, and it’s heavy. Does anyone know a good service (cheap) for this? If so, please comment.

Peace everyone.

I’m regressing!

Click to view full size imageIt’s true what they say about kids, “They make you grow up”,can you tell from the photo?

It’s been cold! The weather should start to get nice again Sunday and early next week.

I watched a ‘kind of bad”, indi-film, “the stone cutter” last night. It was shot in the South Pacific and I spent the whole film looking at the locations, vegetation, and terrain trying to figure out the location of the island in the film. Buy the end of the film I was convinced it was Moorea, and it was. “The stone cutter” is narrated and is a fairy tale/legend film, but what it did for me is remind me of what I think is important in life. I’ve become a bit numb to the word around me since returning from the Pacific. I can’t wait for my life to “slow” once again. Samantha and I are making our first batch (5 gallons) of wine this week. We are collecting wine bottles and will fill the bilge with a little extra ballast : ) I’m also bidding on an antique bread maker on ebay. It is basically a pail with a handle that kneads the doe. I’m “piece-mealing” a decent tackle kit, and buying a few crab and lobster traps that I will carry on Splendid. It will be nice to focus on gathering food once again. I’m also going to build a nice food dryer out of black tin on Splendid’s aft deck. Basically it will be a 4′ X 2’ square box with shelves for drying fish, fruit, and veggies.

Although I haven’t been doing outside fiberglass work I have managed to get a lot done on my nav-station. I installed my 12 volt navigation PC, SSB, Magellan GPS 100 email communicator, and satellite phone. I still have some wiring to do but it’s a really good start. I spent about 5 hours wiring yesterday.

All I’m really looking for these days is a windlass and chain. I’m sure I’ll come up with globs of stuff I’ll need but I’ve got most everything.

Peace everyone.

Cold front

Click to view full size image

How can Florida get sooooo frigg’n cold? It’s supposed to be in the mid, to high 30’s tomorrow night. I’m so lucky that splendid came with a heater.

I won’t be working on the boat for the next few days due to weather. We are going to drink hot chocolate, bake, and have movie marathons. Any baking on cold days in nice because the oven really keeps splendid warm.

I’m really bummed about my windlass situation. My buddy Ken gave me a “rope only” ideal windlass. I called ideal about buying parts and a gypsy to convert it to chain and they gave me a $2,000.00 price on a conversion kit, ARRRGGGG!

Well I’m still searching for a windlass.

This is a picture that my friend Ken took when he visited a few days ago.

Life is good.

Peace everyone.

a tie??

Click to view full size image

Can you believe I’m in a tie? First time in 7 years.

I was a guest speaker at the commodore’s breakfast at the Royal Palm Yacht Club believe it or not. It went pretty well and I actually got some laughs out of the crowd.  Sam and I went to Good will yesterday and I got a nice Polo Jacket, Donna Karen tie, and some Banana Republic slacks all for under ten bucks. Good will is the bomb digitty, I can’t believe more people don’t shop there. I also found a cool teak tide clock for three bucks.

Darren and I are really busting our ass on the bow, check out the new video. I’m hoping to have the entire bow done and painted by next weekend.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Epoxy Primer

Yahoo!!! I finally have a clean white surface on Splendid. Check out the new video.

I think the work will start going a lot faster now. 95% of this job is all prep work. Splendid will be nice and shiny before she leaves Florida for points South. I missed a windlass I really wanted on ebay yesterday, I’m really bummed. I need an electric windlass and I’m really scrounging for a deal. My top pick would be a lighthouse, secondly I’d like an Ideal, and thirdly a Lofrans Tigress. I may end up going with 3/8 chain, but I’d really like 5/16ths HT. It’s stronger and lighter. I’m really bummed about the ideal windlass I missed yesterday. If anyone has a line on a good windlass for a great price, please let me know. The Ideal went for seven hundred and change.

Oh yeah, we also had some problems with a few DVD orders. Our shopping cart showed a few orders processed, but money never hit paypal. We also don’t have email addresses to contact the buyers. We are still working out a few bugs on the new site. Here are the order numbers and last names:

1045 Tingle
1036 Stevens
1030 Charbonneau

If your one of these people, please contact me.

Peace everyone

Cool Stuff

I broke out my new sea breathe hooka system and dove on the boat with Darrin yesterday. It is such an awesome tool. It provides two regulators, and an unlimited about of air to work on the bottom. I have so much more boat under the water I won’t be able to go down and clean the bottom in an hour anymore. My prop had an inch, to two inches of solid barnacles on it. It will be nice to be moving full time and maintaining Splendid’s bottom.

Another cool toy I got was the Magellan GSC100 communicator. There is a link to the last place selling them on the site. They used to cost a few thousand dollars, but you can buy the last batch of them for $395.00. I know a lot of sailors who swear by these things. Basically it’s a self contained (no computer needed) email communicator with a GPS. Service is under $40.00 a month and they work anywhere in the world. I think this is the cheapest means of email communication at sea that I know of. I usually use my satellite phone, but that is about $1.50 a minute. I’ve never used one but I’m looking forward to having this as a backup.

Half of Splendid’s decks are chipped and have clean bare fiberglass decks. It was a bunch of extra work, but this really is the way to go. Darrin also started glassing up the cabin house. We will start faring it today. I can’t wait to get the first layer of paint on the boat!!! People tell me I can get a spray gun, hose, and a water filter and spray my boat using a SCUBA tank. If anyone knows about this please post a comment or send me an email.

Projects, Projects, projects, my mast steps came the other day and I’ll be installing them soon.

We’ll be moving down to Fort Myers beach soon. I’m going to start going to sea (in the gulf) with the girls for a few days at a time. It will be a good opportunity to fish, “shake down” Splendid, and get the girls used to the water. I have a lot to teach Sam. It will also be nice not to be stuck in murky, river water anymore. The idea of pulling in a Dorado or Tuna sounds Splendid!

A new year approaching!

Okay guys, I have to come clean! I’m freaking out!

I think part of BlueSphere’s success has been due to me being honest with my words. Well, I’ve really screwed that up in the last 8 months, haven’t I?

As you know I’ve fallen hard for my beautiful Samantha and Guinevere. The 3 of us are desperately trying to find our place in the world.  I’ve decided that I really need to be honest with my words once again, for all of our sake. Sam is the only woman I’ve ever met who really understands what I want from life, and in turn, wants the same.

I’m not used to listening to other people’s opinions but have been doing so lately for Sam and Guin. Truthfully; I’m pulling my hair out. Society and the people around us are, albeit with the best intentions, pulling Guin toward the dark side. The dark side being this Harley Barbie, mall shopping, war mongering, “GIVE ME MORE”, disposable plastic society that is consuming mine, and a good majority of humanity’s very soul.

Anyway, I didn’t really feel like I was honest with my last Christmas log. Sam was up writing her perspective of our first Christmas together last night, and it has inspired me in a very positive way. These are her words:

Alex can’t sleep… I feel like I’m 14 and my parents don’t like my music… there’s a certain amount of inborn angst in being denied one’s auditory desires… oh well… I suppose one must expect some cons with pros… Xmas was certainly bizarre this year… don’t let this statement mislead you into thinking a holiday at the Aloise’s (my parents, part 1) has ever been Cleaver-like norm, but this year Christmas was uber-awkward.. the typical mom spaz out reemerged due to the brand new audience while Alex played his “wow, I’m really freaked out by your family” role to a tee- non alleviated by his one beacon of hope, my uncle bobby, who could only provide a cameo on this, our second major holiday together.. and then there is my father , a wonderful man who has been for years trying to disappear and finally, I think, may be succeeding.. all of this combined with Guinna, myself and Alex having our Christmas morning – the initial “Santa came mommy!” excitement- to ourselves without the grandparents, therefore unintentionally denying them some of the expected joy ( due to scheduling conflicts) for the first time in the history of Guinevere… and… the mere existence of Alex, my love, the dashingly-loving but similarly wanderlusted, not safe Florida family obligated, non-familiar Michael beau ( how’s that for a descriptor)… all added up for definitely a strange one.. let me not forget to mention Darrin whom, due to hangover plus an allergy to bivalves and some Xmas morning seafood curry paella , caused a common concern which along with a bonding desire for Guin to have a wonderful day, may have been the only reason the whole shebang didn’t come crashing down!

Wow, I cant believe Sam got that all into one sentence!!!

Funny, Alex : )

If you cant tell Sam and I are writing together.

Happy Holidays from the good ship “Splendid”!

Funny thing happened this year. Santa visited “Splendid”!

Christmas morning on Splendid was fun. Guin found a tree and a ton of gifts in the cockpit. After our morning we went to Samantha’s parent’s house for festivities. Guin got buried in Toys. Good thing a lot of them stay with the grandparents, especially the electronic and noisy ones. Why do they make them, everyone seems to hate them. The funny thing about Guin, is she is totally content playing with a cloth doll. Sam and I aren’t to into excessive plastics, luckily Guin isn’t either.

I spent today chipping and sanding. After a while I decided I needed a bigger chisel and went off to home depot. I also picked up a belt sander with 36 grit paper and it is working wonders on the deck. I know, I know, no belt sanders on sailboats. But I’m using it before cabesil is going down, and under an area that will be covered in non-skid.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. I can’t believe it will be 2009 soon.

Cheers.

Peace, Love, and belt sanders!!!

Splendid’s name sake

Click to view full size image

Hi guys, I just posted another video. This is really fun. Some people sent emails really concerned about Splendid from the last video. It’s really no big deal, just another weeks worth of work. All I need to do is chip all this crap off! Remember Splendid’s rig has nearly zero hours on it. New chain plates, rigging, masts, booms & sails. The problem with the decks are merely cosmetic.

Some people in the past have asked if I will change Splendid’s name, and the answer is no. Splendid was commissioned in Hong Kong in 1973 and named after the owners great grand fathers whaling ship, so I’ve heard. I did a little digging yesterday and the following:

In 1848, the Cold Spring Harbor whale ship “Splendid” left Long Island on a whaling voyage to the Pacific Ocean. Her crew would travel thousands of miles and endure many hardships before they returned to Long Island again 29 months later. From today”s perspective, the voyage of the “Splendid” seems an incredible achievement of skill and perseverance. Yet, the Splendid was only one of dozens of Long Island whale ships making similar voyages year after year in the19th century.

I’m trying to get a print of this picture for Splendid’s mail salon.

If you guys have a moment please start some kind of thread in the forums section.

Peace, Love & Coconuts.

Sail Far and live Slowly

Bad day

Well I had to endure one of the worst days a sailor can endure. I had to replace the head in the main bathroom. I spent the day wrestling with poopie pluming, broken valves and sharp hose clamps, ARRRRRGGGGG! I took out the expensive Groko head (I never liked it) and put in a cheap Jabsco. It’s the same head I had on Namaste. I only had to rebuild Namast’s once in 5 years, and it was an easy job.

Tomorrow I’m getting up early to go North of Tampa to pick up Sam’s Christmas gift. I’ll probably be in the car for 4-5 hours. It’s funny; I’ve done more driving in the last few weeks than I have in the past 5 years. I’m not a big fan of driving, I think it’s dangerous. People think sailing around is dangerous, and it’s really completely the opposite. That being said it’s been nice to have access to a car lately.

I’ve uploaded another video it should hit the player in a few hours.

If everyone could go into the forums and start a thread I’d appreciate it. If you have any sailing stuff lying around that you don’t want put it in the “trading post”. I’d like to get the “forums” jump started.

I’m really enjoying the responses to the logs, its fun to read.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and coconuts.

Welcome everyone. Here it is, the new projectbluesphere.com website. If you have any suggestions please don’t hesitate to contact me and let me know. I also want to thank David Wilson from www.summerworks.us for doing an amazing job. If you’re looking for any kind of software or web development this is your guy. I’ll be posting lots of video from now on so stay tuned.

Well I’m off to work Darrin and pull the starboard jib track.

Wow

Sam and I drove down to see my friend in the Keys over the weekend. She wants to sell her boat now! and will take 20k for her 37’ Tayana. If you have been holding off and looking to steal a good cruising boat, now might be the time to make a move. It does need some work, but it is a 37’ Tayana and a beautiful cruising boat. It’s not on yachtworld or anything. If your interested send me an email, it won’t last long.

A 37” Tayana is the boat I wanted when I came back from Tokyo last February. If I had come across this deal I would have bought it without hesitation. The funny thing is, after living on Splendid for so long now, it seems too small for me. Splendid really is a wonderful home. My diesel heater seems to be working all the time and is like a fireplace in our main salon. Guin has the front of the boat with her own bathroom, and Sam and I have the huge aft stateroom with head & shower. The Tayana would be good for us as it still has 2 staterooms, but Splendid is a bit more comfortable. I really wish I had the money as I would buy the Tayana for myself. I’d fix it up and sell it in Australia for around $150k.

Anyway, if your ready to buy a boat now, send me a email. I have a feeling she will be sold by the end of the week.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

New Anchor!

Well I got a new (used) anchor today. I put an ad in craig’s list and a guy called me yesterday. He picked up an anchor off of Sanibel Island with his anchor and thought it was what I wanted. He wanted $150 for it. I drove out to look at it, and its a 60lb plow in good shape. I offered $100 and he took it. I hope it keeps Splendid in place. I will buy a 60lb Manson supreme as soon as I can afford one.

We are going live with the new website soon, I’m psyched!

Turkey day was a good day. Sam, Guin, and I went to Sam’s mother’s house and had a good little feast.

Gobble Gobble and Peace, Love, and Coconuts

Cheers.

Splendid Music

I heard the strangest thing last night. I was laying in bed and herd very strange and beautiful music. It sounded like guitar harmonics mixed with a violin. The wind was flowing over the mizzen backstays causing this beautiful sound. The music Splendid and the wind were playing last night had an Enya / Celtic / wale song feel to it, it was sooooo cool! If I was to think of a sound for the sea, this would be it. It is mesmerizing, and calling. If it continues I’m going to try to get a cheap guitar pickup and mount it in front of the rigging as to record it.

Anyway, Darrin and I are continuing to work every day. I have a bunch of video to post as soon as I can get the new site live. Splendid really will be a great charter boat. I have a few people interested in chartering in the San Blas and I’m taking names. I don’t want to charter too much so space will be limited. I only want to do 5-7 charters per year, which funnily enough was about what I was doing with Namaste. This time around I’ll be able to share my experiences with families as I now have the accommodations for it.

Drag’n Anchor

I drug anchor and Splendid kissed another boat last night.

The wind kicked up to gale strength for a while last night as a cold front passed over head and Splendid decided to go on walk about. We drug about 100 yards and Splendid’s stern kissed the anchor roller of “Reckless Abandoned”. I have a little damage to my toe rail but not much. Darin and I are in the process of totally encapsulating the teak toe rail to water-proof it as well as make it less maintance. Toe rails take a beating and I’m not about to keep fixing teak to make it look pretty. Once it is covered in glass and painted it instantly becomes very easy to fix. A little cabasil, resin and paint, and it’s fixed!

I’ve been a CQR guy for as long as I can remember. I never really had a problem 1/2 way around the world with Namaste’s CQR but today I am re-thinking all my ground tackle. I’m looking really hard at the Manson Supreme anchor. There is no reason Splendid should have drug last night. I was in good holding in 8’ of water with 100’ of 5/16 chain out with a 45lb CQR. The one problem with a CQR is they may take a while to reset, and that’s what happened, it didn’t re-set. I have two anchors out this morning; I threw out a danforth “Bahama” style last night. I’m also going to upgrade to 300’ of 3/8 chain and a burley electric/manual windlass. Splendid is not a small boat like I’m used to and I’m learning new things every day. I guess I hve to start looking for a delivery job or something as I could easily spend 5k on new ground tackle and a windlass.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, love, and Coconuts.

Cruising again!

Cruising is in sight again. I left Tokyo last January, and I’m going to leave Fort Myers this January. I think one year is a good amount of time to put a boat together for cruising. I’m really hoping Sam and Guin come with me. Sam really wants to come and Guin is really loving the boat and being on the hook. She loves the dinghy rides all the time. Guin has been learning to swim with a really cool program. If you have kids (6 months – 6 years) and you’re planning on cruising or living on a boat I highly recommend infant swimming resources, you can check them out at http://www.infantswim.com. ISR is infant survival training and an important skill for cruising kids to have. Since we are on the topic of “Kids and cruising” you might also be interested in http://www.kidsaboard.com . They have good articles and information on the topic.

Darin has really been helping me out with getting Splendid ready. I’m giving him my extra dinghy (Carib), 10 hp Mercury, and extra SSB package. Darin is in the position I was in when I left, “big dreams and hollow pockets”. It’s a good way to be and I have enormous respect for people who cut the dock lines with nothing to loose. His boat is small with an old outboard hung from the stern but he has the most important piece of equipment of all, “a good attitude”! I’m also going to hook him up with a page on my new website so you all can check up on him as he travels.

I’m really excited about making my next cruising film!

Peace everyone.

– Alex

On the hook!

It’s soooo easy to get caught up in society and relying on things that I don’t really need. Why did I stay in the slip so long?I don’t know if you remember but I was really bumming going to the marina. I left on the 4th and I’m back on the hook again, it’s so nice! Sam and Guin are enjoying it as well. Guin likes all the dinghy rides, and Sam is becoming a pro at running the inflatable.

I met a nice guy who just got a boat and is going cruising. He bought his boat up at the “Glades” where I found Splendid at the beginning of the year. He came over the other day and we started chatting. He is a fiberglass guy who needs a new dinghy. The funny thing is I have an extra dinghy and I need some fiberglass work. We are going to glass up all the wood on the super-structure. I was just going to paint over it, but the short of it is I’ll be chasing cracks down for the rest of my life, and glassing it up is really the way to go. We are going to start this week. The weather is cool and dry and the perfect time for this kind of work and painting.

There is a big boat show here in Fort Myers next week, it should be fun. I’m hoping I can sell some DVD’s.

Peace everyone.

The aft cabin is almost done. I’d been wanting to refinish the mater state room but it is a dusty affair. Sam and Guin went to visit family in New Jersey, and this last week has been a mad sanding & painting fest. It looks really good though. I took of all the teak trim. Sanded and scraped all the old paint off, patched all the holes, reinforced the chain plates, and painted. IT LOOKS AWSOME!! I’m going to go out and focus on the exterior again. Hurricane season is over for all intensive purposes and I want to pull splendid together. I still need to install an inverter, mount my GPS & fish finder (depth gauge), clean up the engine room, and finish my paint & repairs on the deck. I’m putting down an aggressive non-skid, and netting the life lines. Oh yeah, I need to get the SSB installed as well.

I’m going back on the hook on Sunday. I’m really looking forward to not being connected to the dock anymore. It’s convenient having power and water, but its just not the way I like to live.

Cheers.

Peace, Love & Coconuts

– Alex

Freezing!!!

I woke up to 56 degrees today, burrrrr.

I’ve been crazy working the last weeks. The aft cabin is stripped clean and ready for paint, as is the aft deck. I’m putting in a few new cleats today and starting to put down some paint in the cabin. I found a hairline crack under one of the chain plate bases. After a bit of grinding I found someone putty bedding behind the base. I didn’t like it so I ground it all out and glassed it all up with matte. It’s over engineered, and I’m much happier with it.

I’m going out on the hook on the 2nd and decided it was a good time to clean, and re-galvanize the anchor. I used the galvanizing in the can, hope it sticks.

I’m really happy with the Glidden floor & porch paint tests. I found the spec sheet on the paint at glidden.com, it even says it’s for boat decks. If you’re interested check it out here:

http://www.duspec.com/DuSpec2/product/ProductDocumentSearchController.htm?documentFormat=pdf&systemSetId=30&productCode=PF80XX&documentType=datasheet

At 17 bucks a gallon it sure is a good cost effective way of cleaning up your boat. They also sell a non-skid additive powder (shark grip) for about $5.00.

Why is it I always need to rebuild a boat before I go cruising? It’s funny, I couldn’t imagine just having the money to buy a boat and have people work on it for me. It would take so much away from the experience of cruising. I think the process of restoring is a boat is like a “right of passage”. I’ll feel like I deserve it this way.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, love, and coconuts.

Paint

I’ve really been driving myself crazy on trying to figure out the paint thing. There are so many products and options, most of them expensive. I know I’m going to use Interlux perfection on the hull. It’s a 2-part polyurethane, but close to $300.00 a gallon. Interlux also makes a 1-part polyurethane that is a bit cheaper, but still an expensive option. One of you guys (Thanks Martin) suggested I use Glidden floor and porch paint from home depot. It is an oil based 1-part polyurethane and to my understanding it’s what the commercial boats use. It’s $18 – 20.00 a gallon and comes in any color you want. And for the non-skid, it was suggested to me to use Black Diamond bead blast from Northern Tool, which is $7.00 for a 50lb bag.

I also need cleats for Splendid as she only has 1 cleat on the bow, and one on the stern. This became an issue when I was trying to get her secured for the hurricane. I just couldn’t get all the line around the cleats. I’m going to go with galvanized cleats which are about $15.00 each. Splendid may not have a “yacht finish” at the end of the day, but that’s not what I’m going for. When you’re doing serious cruising, the finish is the last thing you want to worry about (in my opinion).

The other big news is we are putting together BlueSphere energy. It’s still in its early stages, but if your looking for alternative energy options please check out www.bluesphereenergy.com.

Finally!!!

I can’t wait to shoot my next film!!! It was a hard transition for me going from shooting film professionally in Hollywood to shooting for my self on small video cameras. I was never able to get the image quality I wanted up until now. With film…, it’s all about the glass. If you’re a video or film making buff you need to check this out:

http://www.adapterplace.com/index.php

It’s an adapter that allows small video cameras to be used with 35mm lenses. WOW!!!!

I tend to go through video cameras quickly; I’m kind of hard on them. With the Letus35 I can put together my camera package the way I want to (in the glass), and buy a new camera when I need it. WAHOOOO!!! Watch one of the sample films that was shot using the Letus35 adapter and 35mm primes:

http://www.aerialsfilm.com/bloom/hv20mini.mp4 .

I’m still looking at about 3 grand to build the camera that I want but I’ll be able to keep all the good stuff as camera technology changes or I get my camera wet, or have moisture issues which seem to be the biggest problem with my shooting style. Picture quality will be a major aspect to my next film as opposed to handheld shots on the fly. I’m sure there will still be a lot of handheld, but I’ll really be able to capture the beauty of the places I visit, I’m PSHCHED!!!!

Life!

It’s funny having so many people watching my life and ask questions. Many of the questions of late have been about Sam and Guin. “Are you going cruising with them” is what I hear just about every day. The answer is yes. There are a few hurdles to over come at the moment. One of the more serious concerns is what to do with Sam’s two dogs (Rudy & Sage). If anyone out there has some property and is looking for two great dogs please let me know. We’re really trying to find them a good home where they can stretch their legs.

Another concern is Guin’s safety and education. Most cruisers know that cruising is much safer than living in the system and doing the every day grind. Cruisers don’t drive often, exercise a lot, and generally live a much healthier and more natural life style. I’ve spoken to some cruising family friends and they generally have the same thing to say. “Get a life raft, even though the chances are you’ll never need it (insurance), net the life lines, contact The Calvert school (http://www.calvertschool.org/home-school/ ), and get her the hell out of there! I’ve said it 100 times in my logs. The cruising kids I know are exceptional children. Many speak 3 languages by puberty and have a unique view of the world. There is a really cool video on the Calvert School’s webpage; here is a quick link to it. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4447945n . If you have ever thought of home schooling your children, Calvert is the way to go.

I’m still busting my ass on “Splendid” every day and looking forward to the end of hurricane season. I’m really excited to share some of what I know with Sam and Guin. I’ve been to so many beautiful places only to share it with a video camera. Perhaps that will change. I’m going to give Sam a blog page. I know many of you want to hear what it’s like from a woman’s perspective. Maybe I can get Guin to talk about it too?

Well that’s it from me, off to dinner.

When you work on a project for 3 years you kind of loose perspective, you get too close to it. The positive comments on “Finding freedom” are overwhelming. Everyone is saying its better then the first. I feel so good to have this film off of my plate. I’m already shooting the next one!!!

My next goal is to paint Splendid’s super-structure. I’m really looking forward to the feeling of accomplishment when it is painted and pretty.

I’ve decided to put water seal on the wood before priming it. When I close up this job I don’t ever want to open it up again!!!

Here are a few words from my buddy Jamie who is on the last leg of finishing his circumnavigation:

Sailing through brilliant stars as they fall from the sky

Sailing through time zones

Sailing through schools of flying fish lifted, bow riding dolphins and spouting whales

Sailing through marriages births and deaths

Sailing through books, writings and languages

Sailing through volcanic rocky islands and coral lagoons

Sailing through sunrises and sunsets

Sailing through life

Peace, Love, more Love, and Peace!!!

Man, I love my boat! The work is coming along well. I found another 40’ Cheoy Lee Midshipman for sale. This one doesn’t have a modern aluminum rig like splendid though.

http://tinyurl.com/4vv599

She will look sooooooo good when I’m done with the decks, and house.

I got an email from my friends Chris & Maggie on “Contigo” (“With you” in Spanish) the other day and I’ve really been dreaming of sailing in the Pacific again. Check out their experience in Fiji:

Cheers! or as they say here “Bula!” We have been lazy in writing but have been thinking about you all the time. SinceSummer, our friends’ 17 yr old daughter, left on the 26th, we have been in theYasawas, an island group off the west side of the 2 main islands of Fiji, Viti Levuand Vanua Levu. We have visited villages and done “sevusevu.” Sevusevu meansbringing a gift to the village chief which should be kava or preferably, whaleteeth. But since whale teeth are hard to find, we brought kava. You buy the kavaroots at the market in the mainland, for about $20 a bunch. They look like a bouquetof dried grey roses wrapped in newspaper. The locals grind the roots into a powderthat they mix with water and drink it. Sharing with us is an honor. To visit thevillages you have to be properly attired. This means wearing clothes (both for themen and the women) that cover your shoulders and knees. Women should wear an anklelength skirt and men, long pants. Also, no hats or caps, nor sunglasses, norshoulder straps hanging form your shoulders. Whew! They’re pretty strict about ittoo! You walk into the village and ask for the 2nd in command and he takes you tothe chief. The chief welcomes you and asks you to sit on the straw mat in his bure(hut) and, because you are far away from your home and family, they tell you thatnow, their village is your home and the clan is your family. These people are thewarmest, most welcoming, happy people we have ever come across. In the village of Nambukeru, after we presented the sevusevu, they cooked awonderful meal of fish, octopus, root vegetables and bananas for us. They served uson a long table under the trees on the beach. It was set with a tablecloth, flowersand the meal was served family style. The women stand behind you and fan the foodand pass the serving dishes from one side of the table to the other while the menand us (the crew from MISS JODY and SERAFIN) ate. Once we were done, the women satdown to eat. We asked them to join us but they said that was not their custom – themen eat first. Good grief!! We also joined them for church service on Sunday where the women’s choir sang hymnsyou would recognize but they were all sung in Fijian, and the preacher prayed, inEnglish, for our safe travels on the ocean. The women all sit together, the childrenhave their own section and the men another. The next afternoon about 9 of them cameto see the boats. We had “open house” and ferried them, 3 at a time, to each of theboats. We had a blast! They ate cookies and Tang on CONTIGO, crackers and juice onSERAFIN and juice and Oreos on MISS JODY. (We all wanted to visit Miss Jody!!)Theyasked a million questions and we did the same. That evening they had a “meke” forus; a typical Fijian dance, where the men and women of the village performed songsabout fishing, the caves and the people from the different countries that havevisited them. They had Frangipani leis (yummy smelling!) for all of us and we evengot up and danced with them! I loved dancing with the men in grass skirts! As we pulled up our anchors and left this magical bay, they were on the beach wavingus goodbye and shouting “Mode manda sota tale!!” (Good bye and until we see otheragain!) We visited other islands where we swam in caves that looked like cathedrals, inNaviti we snorkeled with 5 giant manta rays that came to feed at high tide andperformed turns and underwater dances for us. We saw a humpback whale feeding theirbaby as we sailed from one island to another, visited another island where we wentto dive on a sunken WWII plane and had to cross through a 70 year old couple’s yard. They live on a beautiful piece of beach by themselves and were fixing their hutawaiting the arrival of their 17 grandchildren during school break this week. Webrought them canned meat, flour and sugar and they gave us beautiful nautilus shellsthat wash up on their beach. And if life is not measured by the amount of breathsyou take, but by the moments that take your breath away…one night we stood in aweand wonder as we saw most beautiful moon rise of our lives in our perfect anchoragein the Yasawas..and it took our breath away! We are now in Port Denerau in Viti Levu today. There are cafes and shops andtourists and the magic of the islands seems far away. Hopefully, on Monday, after weprovision and buy fuel, we will return to the magic. Peace, love and bula!!Magie and Chris I’m also posting a picture of my favorite little girl Guin. I’m seriously busting my ass on the boat. My confidence level is high as well. I’m pulling larger and larger sections of wood out and replacing it with epoxy and micro-light. I’ll have the entire house stripped, filled, primed, and painted in about 2 weeks at this rate. I am the epoxy king, YEEEHAAAAA!!! The only other thing I really need to do before I can go anywhere is finish installing my auto pilot. The hard part is done. The drive is mounted, all I have to do is install the electronics and tweak the rudder stops.

My bank (Washington Mutual) tanked yesterday. Wow, things are really bad, that’s huge! I must say there is a certain comfort in knowing I can just sail away if it gets really bad.

I really love having a great refrigerator & freezer. What a luxury! The freezer is stocked with fish, shrimp, and tofu. And I have cold O’douls” in the fridge. The NA beer is really nice to drink during the heat of the day.

We’ll be launching the new website within a few weeks. I’ll still have the logs, however video will be a much larger component. Exciting things.

Cheers everyone.

Paint

Click to view full size image

Well I’m getting ready to lay down some paint. So much work is prep. It will be really rewarding to see some clean painted surfaces on Splendid. The gray in the picture below is primer. I’m painting the doghouse sides with Interlux Brightside “Grand banks beige” and painting the trim with teak colored polyurethane. The Brightside is a 1-part poly. I’m not using the 2-part (Perfection) on wooden surfaces because it has a tendency to crack with varying humidity as the wood expands & contracts. The decks, hull, and super structure (all fiberglass surfaces) will all be painted with Interlux Perfection (2-part) Mediterranean white. I’ve stripped all the nasty cetol off the teak in the cockpit and I’ll be laying down Interlux Schooner varnish and trimming with a matt varnish. I’m really taking my time with Splendid and doing everything right. I may have her for the rest of my life and want her as beautiful as possible. Looking back Splendid really was the perfect boat for me. The rig (masts, booms, standing rigging, sails, and chain plates) are all new with no hours on them. The motor (Perkins 4108) is in great shape with very few hours and was replaced about 10 years ago. Splendid had some soft spots in the house and combing box’s which I’m fixing with epoxy and filler. I’ll have everything above the deck repainted, fixed, and shiny by November. I’m thinking of using Interlux’s Polyurethane non-skid Deck coating on the decks. Either that or using a 2-part Poly and a sand shaker. I want an aggressive non skid and I think the 2-part will last longer and have better grip under foot. If anyone has any experience with non skid, please give me a shout.

My refrigerator & freezer are awesome. The freezer is packed with fish, shrimp, and some ice cream (Tofuitty). I’m not doing much dairy these days and I gave up meat (Red & fowl) a few months ago. I’m really focusing on my physical and spiritual health these days, I feel great!

I’m also feeling really good about my skill level with my boat projects. I have enough knowledge, tools, and supplies to get me through the days. I’m not off to West Marine every few hours and have what I need onboard. I’m going through a lot of sand paper and have a few more months of sanding in front of me. It will all pay off though.

Peace everyone.

Sail far and live slowly.

Tall grass

I know my logs have been lacking lately, but it’s for the grater good.

The new DVD (Finding Freedom) is finally in the mail to me (1000 copies). You can expect to see them in your mail box in the next few weeks. The company I was dealing with was the pits! The problem was they had my money and I didn’t really have a choice but to wait it out. The new Project BlueSphere website is about to launch and it will be a bi-monthly TV show with the help of youtube, WOOT!

Splendid is getting a nice facelift and talking every spare moment I have. Sam and Guin are helping and things are getting done quickly. I’m focusing on the super-structure and getting all the leaks dealt with, and painting the house.  I’ll be posting some video shortly.

Its strange being land locked. I must admit at times I feel quite confined. I haven’t caught a fish in…, well…, a really long time. I want to get back to nature and living off of the sea.

Something happened the other day which really made me think. Sam’s house is for sale and we were doing a little clean up. A city vehicle parked in the drive way that said “code enforcement”. Sam’s house isn’t in a development, just on a normal block. The guy started harassing Sam about her grass being to long and threatened her with a fine, REALLY! I don’t get it guys, what is going on? My uncle is loosing his home in New Jersey. My grand parents paid off that house in the early eighties. My uncle is unable to work after loosing his store and now the state is taking the home I grew up in. I just don’t understand this place anymore. I would give anything to be living with the Kuna again.

Splendid really is the key to my freedom. This time I’ll be doing my own welding and sail repair. I’ll be much more self-sufficient on Splendid then I was on Namaste. I’m really excited about having a wind vane this time. I have more solar power and still need to build two wind generators. I know some of you are thinking that I’m getting stuck here but that is certainly not the case. I’m spending my time and money wisely. I will live a free and natural life once again and bring you all with me. Splendid charters are just around the corner!

Peace everyone.

Sail far, and live free.

refrigeration!!!

Well I have Splendid’s 110v, and engine driven refrigeration systems working. Don’t ask me how much, I’m crazy about it right now. I was hoping to spend about $500.00, but the bill was over $1500.00, ARRGGG! It’s an important system to have and it’s done. Now I need to go and find a job. I have a tentative delivery scheduled this fall but that’s about all I have on my plate now. I’m going to make some calls and see if I can’t scare something up. I’d like to be working as much as possible until the end of hurricane season anyway.

We should have the new DVD’s by the end of the week and shipping next week, hurrah!!!

Anyway, I’m off to the store to buy some things for the refrigerator.

Alex

IKE

Thanks for small favors, Ike is missing us!

Splendid is becoming a home. I’ve spent a few days organizing and pulling her together. Sam has brought a few nice things which make a world of difference.

My Cousin is auctioning off his house, you can buy a ticket for $100, check it out at HTTP://AnySoldierHouseRaffle.com  . It really sad to see him selling it, he built it by hand. I don’t know much about the auction but I hope the right person gets it, it’s an awesome house!!

The new website is just about to launch and we are getting the new DVD’s this week.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Sam and Guin

Click to view full size image

Wow…, sorry for disappearing.

Sam had a family emergency and we took off to New Jersey with Guin (her 3 year old). There were no computers around and I’ve been unable to update the site. We drove 23 hours to get to New Jersey from Fort Myers. I met Sam’s parents and also got a chance to visit my family in New Jersey & Maryland. You really do get to know someone on long road trips, and I must say…, I really like these girls.

We got back last night and had a really suckie thing happen. We hit a deer about an hour from getting back to Ft. Myers. I’ve never hit a deer before, “It can really shake you up”! The really strange thing is Sam and I were just discussing the last time she hit a deer a few years back. It’s almost like we knew it was going to happen, or felt it coming, weird!!!

I had two nice packages waiting for me when I got back. Sam bought me a wine making kit for my birthday which arrived. We’ll be making 6 gallons of wine at a time. I also got my Sea Breathe unit ( http://www.seabreathe.com/ ) Splendid really need a bottom job and now I’ll have compressed air to make the process easier.

Anyway, I wanted to introduce these two. Today is Guins first day at school. Soooooo exciting : )

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love & Coconuts.

Alex

Where

Where o where is Alex Dorsey???

My Girl Friend had a family emergency and we had to take off to New Jersey. I haven’t been around a computer. I’ll be back on Splendid on Friday.

I’m really looking foreword to getting back to the boat.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

Rain

Wow did it rain yesterday; I should have been filling my tanks with rain water as opposed to city water. All is good. I’m doing a lot of epoxy work and trying to get splendid water tight. I’m working on the next video to upload. The flip camera has been awesome!!

Hay, you know I’m a big fan of wind vanes. My buddy has a sailomat windvane for sale. Check out www.sailomat.com for more info. I’ve never used one but I’ve heard good things. If you’re interested let me know and I’ll hook you up with him.

I’m starting to get itchy to go sailing but this whole hurricane thing iz a real bummer.

Cheers

Peace, Love, and coconuts

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

You have to be kidding me!

Looks like tropical storm “Gustav” is on the way, ARRRGGGGGG! I just put up the bimini and tarp this morning.

I’m thinking positively and hoping it goes out to the gulf. August & September are the high hurricane months; I guess I just have to deal with it. Hummmm, why am I in hurricane season…? I have to fess up. I met a really wonderful woman 4 months ago. I haven’t written about her because, well…, I guess, I just wanted to keep a part of my life private. She has a beautiful 3 year old daughter and we have been having a real blast together. I’m in awe…, and can’t believe all the good karma flowing my way these days. Splendid fell into my lap, now this, WOW! Life is truly beautiful!

Please, please, please no more storms & hurricanes! I’m in a safe spot and it’s not that I’m so worried about Splendid, but I can’t get any work done. I need my bimini up along with a tarp covering my work area as I need to dry the wood before I seal it all up. I’m really not complaining and I’m sport’n a big smile.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and more Love!

Tropical weater

I hate, I hate, I hate tropical weather!

Well I didn’t have any damage; the whole thing was just really stressful. When hurricane Charlie rolled through here years back it was a category 4 hurricane. No boats were lost in the Fort Myers Yacht Basin. Splendid was tied with double lines and on all four sides. The non-floating docks are solid concrete and look like they could stand a direct meteor hit. Fay was just a solid tri-Tropical storm; however the wind howled around 60 and rain pummeled in sheets. Needless to say I’m happy it’s over.

I’m hoping to see some sunshine in the next few days so I can get back to stripping & sanding. I’ll probably wait another month before I put the dodger and bimini back up. Tizzz the season to be windy, ARG!!!

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and lots more Love!!

After the Storm

Hi Everyone,

This is David the web guy.  Alex called me this morning and asked me to let everyone know that he and the boat are all OK after Tropical Storm Fay.  The Internet is still down where he is at so it might be another day or two before Alex can post some updates and details of the storm.

Peace, Love, and Internet Again…

David

Hurricane Fay

I’m breaking my #1 rule, “DON’T BE IN HURRICANE SEASON”! Check out Fays predicted track:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at1.shtml?5day?large#contents

I’m keeping a close eye on it. If it’s looking like it’s going to hit it means a lot of work. I’ll need to take sails off, stow dinghies & motors, and do a lot of praying. I hate, I hate, I hate hurricanes!

I bought a bunch of Interlux Perfection paint and supplied yesterday. When I got back to the boat and started reading I realized that 2 part paint isn’t good for painting over wood. I’m researching using interlux Toplac & Brightside paints. The 2 part polyurethane is too hard and will crack as the wood moves with varying moisture content in the air. I’ll use the 2 part polyurethane on Splendid’s hull.

Peace, Love, and no HURRICANES!!!

– Alex

Sanding!!!!

Let the sanding begin!!! I’ve started with a small area of the bow and prepping for epoxy, primer & paint, WOOT! I’m shooting a nice video to kick off the 1st episode for bluesphereTV which we’ll be launching in a few weeks. The new website will launch with the shipping of the 2nd DVD “Finding Freedom”, FINALLY!!!!

If you’re interested in wine, sake, cheese making I think I found the best site. Check out: http://www.leeners.com/index.html

I’m really excited to get some paint on Splendid. If there is at least one nice looking spot I feel it will grow rapidly. It’s hard to work outside in the Florida summer heat and it makes working slow. I really need to stay hydrated as the water pours out of me almost as fast as I can drink it. I get a lot of sweat dripping on my nicely sanded teak, Arg!!!

Hay, did you know Latitudes and Attitudes is having a seafarer of the year contest? Check out http://www.latsandatts.net/magazine/contest.php

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Sandpaper

Make soy milk

I’m so excited about being self sufficient on Splendid after I get my ship together. Someone sent me this cool youtube video recipe about making soy milk, check it out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyvxCh-2P_I ,

They also sent a great link for sprouting http://www.sproutpeople.com/ . if your interested in making wine with me check out the wine making kits on ebay.

I had to pull the headliner apart in my main salon yesterday to run speaker wire for my outside speakers. Music outside is soooo important!

If anyone knows about making cheese please drop me an email and enlighten me.

For the next few days I’ll be working on the new website “It’s so awesome”!

The DVD is done and going to replication, FINALLY.

Cheers everyone. Lets all live cleaner and Sail far.

Green River

The green river of money is coming to an end. I’ve ordered a new S3 course computer & corepack from Raymarine, 2 new solar panels, and my awesome new outboard. I also bought a new DC breaker panel. I found a really awesome vertical Ideal windlass that a guy has for sale here but I don’t think I can swing it; another good deal will come across my plate soon. The windlass is really the last big part to the puzzle.

I’m off to get a few gallons of epoxy, micro balloons, and filler. I’m going to start on the decks shortly. I need to figure out some wood repairs as well. I think I just need to pull it all apart and figure it out. I’m a bit afraid that the repair exceeds my ability, but hell, I’ll never know right?

I’ve also getting a wine making kit for my Birthday, yeehaaa, 5 gallons of wine at a time. I’m also researching cheese making kits on the internet. If I can make wine, cheese & bread, coupled with spear fishing, crabbing, and a bag of rice I think I’ll have it all under control. I’m looking for a nice lobster trap for the boat : )

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Sailing far!!!

No more screwing around!

I know the problem on my mercury is something stupid and I won’t let it win. I’ll fix it and sell it with the Caribe that came with Splendid. I’ll ask $1600 for the package. I hate getting rid of that Caribe as it’s such a nice Hypalon boat, and in great shape, but “you know”, I’m in cleaning house mode.

If you have been reading my logs for any length of time you know I like to get broke things and fix them. Well, I’m leaving the dock on the 2nd of next month for a mooring or the hook. I need a good dependable motor and I got one. In my opinion Yamaha makes the best outboards out there. I found this 9.9HP 2002 model which has been barely run for $1000.00 and bought it this afternoon. I took a few trips out in the channel and it really runs like a dream, FAST too! YEEEEHHHHHAAAAA!!!!!

I’m working on the new website, it’s going to ROCK!!!

Peace, love, and dependable outboards!!!!

funny Picture :)

Click to view full size image

This is a funny picture that my buddy Aras took. This was taken at the back entrance of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Click on it to enlarge and read the print.

Man I was never this hot in the Pacific or South America. This is truly brutal. I can only manage to work outside for about 10 minutes. I’m trying to put the old Carib dinghy that came with Splendid together. I’m going to sell it to raise some money for a new (used) outboard. That 10 hp Mercury sea-pro that I bought is really a piece of crap! I still don’t have it running. It has been to the shop twice. The last time the guy said I need a $200.00 power pack. I bought one online, installed it and still have the same problem. I can’t return the powerpack either. I think it’s a timing issue. The motor starts and runs fine. It just acts like it’s a 2-horse, and not a 10. I’ll never buy a Mercury again. I’d really like to find a used 2-stroke 9.9 Yamaha.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and lazy cool days

Why?

Something has really been eating at my gut. A few days before I returned to Fort Myers a police officer (Andrew Widman (d.o.b. 5-11-78)) was shot in the face and killed just a few blocks from Splendid and the Fort Myers Yacht basin. It turns out he was a friend of a friend and I had seen him around. I wanted to put up a link to a site where everyone could read his story and donate a few dollars to the family. He was quite young and left a wife and 3 children behind.

http://www.fmpolice.com/tabid/54/itemid/92/0718-Fort-Myers-Police-Officer-Killed-in-the-Lin.aspx

This really was a gross atrocity and it spurred me into a lot of deep thought. I’ve spent a lot of time it what we might call “dangerous places” like Panama and Colombia, and there is violence, but I haven’t seen so much violence without reason. There seems to be so much hate and fear rolling around these days, why is that? I don’t really know what to say, I just can’t seem to shake this thing and find the incident often on my mind.

I know today’s log isn’t sailing related but I wanted to mention what has been weighing on my mind.

On the upside, I ordered 2 110watt Solar panels today, and am looking forward to unplugging from the grid on the second of next month. I’d stay here at the dock longer but I just can’t afford it. I’ll cruise around the area working on boat project until November/December when hurricane season is over. After that “Who knows”? I do have a few surprises up my sleeve though : )

Peace, Love, and lots more Peace!!!!

– Alex

Heat!

Man it’s been hot!!!

I’ve decided to stay in the slip for one more month. I need to put in a bunch of hours on the new website and the power, AC, and internet will make it a lot easier.

I got a check disk of the new DVD yesterday and it’s good, “Print them BABY”!!!! What a bitch this has been!

I’ve been contemplating hiring a carpenter for a few days. Labor rates are really through the roof!!! How can we be in such a bad economic state and no one is willing to work for a fair wage?  Oh well, I’d rather learn to do everything myself anyway. I’m not so good working with wood but I guess it’s time to change all that!

I’m pretty upset with Raymarine at the moment. When I found my Autohelm 6000 on eBay I called them before bidding (twice) to find out if they could repair it if it was DOA. My answer both times was “yes”. When I sent it in for repairs the statement was “This autopilot is over 15 years old, we don’t have the parts”. Well that was a waste of $800.00! I’ll be ordering a new autopilot next week!!! I’m looking at an S3 corepack, 6002 control head, and using the T2 linear drive that I have. The autopilot is the most essential piece of electronics onboard and I want it right! That being said I hope to live off of my Aries windvane and use the autopilot in motoring and non-windy conditions.

Peace, Love and Sailing!!

Alex
