Lazy Jacks, ARRRG!

Click to view full size image

Our wine will not last; we are down to just 3 bottles, ARRRRRG.

We are anchored in Lake Worth and will be in Stuart tomorrow.

I hate, I hate, I hate jiffy reefing and lazy jacks. I really miss the simplicity of sailing Namaste. We had a squall roll in and it started blowing 40 or so and I had to reef up the main quickly. Well I managed to put a hole in my main because the sail got sucked up into a block for the jiffy reefing along with the rope. I really do hate the way this boat was rigged. It’s all nice modern expensive stuff but I’ll take a simple rig any day of the week with a standard reefing system. I kind of have to live with it because of the size of the bimini, I just can’t reach the boom. I need to figure out a different way to reef and I really want to pitch the lazy jacks. The main always gets caught in them when I’m trying to raise it, or lower it.

Sam and Guin took a swim as soon as I dropped the hook, it’s becoming standard practice.

I’ll get a video up once we reach Stuart along with a bunch of photos.

 Peace everyone.

Scratch the lazy jacks if you want, you can reinstall if you want later. Glad y’all are enjoying yourselves. Just discovered my cape dory is sinking. Strong flow from stuffing box…that was suppose to be repacked not long ago by “a boat yard” but I think it was not done. Will have to pull her asap as leak is quite aggressive. battery charger on/ water checked in batts/ praying she will float till Monday $$$$$$$$ -Mojo

  2. You are so right… Wine doesn’t last. Yep, it’s getting those battens between those little ropes, but once you get used to it, you’ll like it. It sure took me a while, but now I like those lazy jacks a lot. It seems that I found little “things” that made the process easier each time and now it just works. Every system is different though so I’m not giving any advice. Just keep playing with ’em. How big of hole in the main? Mine did the same thing once, but no damage. I’m just a lucky guy… Sometimes…

Alex, I used to loosen the lazy jacks and tie them forward before hoisting. You also have to dead into the wind. I did find them useful for dropping the main and containing it a bit. Truthfully, you can just drop onto the bimini. I wasn’t happy with them either, but loved the teflon track for raising the main, and the new big self tailing wenches. I’d never had lazy jacks before but they sure didn’t do what I expected.

Sorry to hear about your main and real sorry to hear about the wine. mine sometimes has a hard time lasting also.
Hope the sun rise brings you all better luck today.

    Cheers……..

  5. Capt Paul, not a big hole, I’ll patch it with a piece of dacron and my hand awl. I really hate having to go dead into the wind every time I want to adjust the sails, I think the lazy jacks are on the way out.

I forgot to mention I caught a small tuna for lunch/dinner yesterday, it was sure nice to catch a fish for a change.

Also a big fiasco this morning. I always check the oil before I start the day. Well I topped off in No-name and forgot to put the cap back on. What a mess in the engine room, ARRRRGGGG! I couldn’t find the cap either. I had to make a make-shift one. I have a big mess to clean up!

Anyway we are in route to Stuart on the ICW. Should be there tonight.

    Cheers.

  7. hi bubby(garden), it’s sam.. we eat very healthy, more so then most.. lots of whole grains and beans and veggies supplemented with the occasional fish we catch- you should have seen the beautiful tuna we reeled in yesterday! i can honestly say that guinna eats better since we’ve cast off as her whole attitude has changed in regards to trying new things and savoring new flavors, she is quite at peace in the sea:) and as for liabations, we don’t partake at sea and there was a bit of consumption in the keys but one must take into consideration our reunion with an old friend and alex’s birthday (magnum now, as in 44) we are for sure dry compared to most sailors i know:) finally, we are setting up base camp(ie anchoring splendid) in the Chesapeake most likely close to annapolis, but we may carry on up to ny or mystic at some point during our stay.. i love you, tell pop the same

  8. Sam: You do eat well… AND have a lot of knowledge that needs to be shared. When we met and started talking food, recipes and GARLIC, I knew that Alex had a jackpot. As for Gwen, she’s the best in the best care. What a kid. I’m looking forward to watching her grow up and meeting her again. Sam, email me direct through the website, http://www.SailMagicWind.com. I need your mailing address. I have some Garlic Goodies to get into your hands. You’ll be hooked on Garli Garni. It’s Pat’s best product and will make your breath stink. Got a love it… And it can’t hurt the smell of the galley too.

Take care and enjoy the journey…
