I drug anchor and Splendid kissed another boat last night.
The wind kicked up to gale strength for a while last night as a cold front passed over head and Splendid decided to go on walk about. We drug about 100 yards and Splendid’s stern kissed the anchor roller of “Reckless Abandoned”. I have a little damage to my toe rail but not much. Darin and I are in the process of totally encapsulating the teak toe rail to water-proof it as well as make it less maintance. Toe rails take a beating and I’m not about to keep fixing teak to make it look pretty. Once it is covered in glass and painted it instantly becomes very easy to fix. A little cabasil, resin and paint, and it’s fixed!
I’ve been a CQR guy for as long as I can remember. I never really had a problem 1/2 way around the world with Namaste’s CQR but today I am re-thinking all my ground tackle. I’m looking really hard at the Manson Supreme anchor. There is no reason Splendid should have drug last night. I was in good holding in 8’ of water with 100’ of 5/16 chain out with a 45lb CQR. The one problem with a CQR is they may take a while to reset, and that’s what happened, it didn’t re-set. I have two anchors out this morning; I threw out a danforth “Bahama” style last night. I’m also going to upgrade to 300’ of 3/8 chain and a burley electric/manual windlass. Splendid is not a small boat like I’m used to and I’m learning new things every day. I guess I hve to start looking for a delivery job or something as I could easily spend 5k on new ground tackle and a windlass.
Cheers everyone.
Peace, love, and Coconuts.
