Land and Sea

windy

Man has it been windy. It’s been blowing 25-30 from the N-NE for a solid week. The dinghy rides have been wet and the anchorage lumpy. All that being said I’m certainly not complaining, it’s nice to be here.

I’m mostly finished with the “windlass” project. It all seems to be fine but needs a little tweaking. The chain is supposed to be 5/16ths BBB and I’m using proof coil. If I hold a 2×4 against the chain as it is being raised it flows through the gypsy smoothly. I have the feeling that if I raised the windlass the chain would flow better. Is the windlass supposed to be at a higher angle? I’ll have to look into it further. For now it is good!

I’ve been installing my SSB. Splendid came with an old ICOM but I’m installing my SEA, and trying to use it with the ICOM tuner. I’ll have to call ICOM tech support today. It is receiving fine and I’m going to start getting weather fax on a daily basis.

Life is good in the Keys.

Peace

  1. Alex ..if your chain is bbb..the ods are your gypsy is most likely a proff coil gypsy.. Defender will most likely have the right one for your windless

Once my tub is back in the water in about 4 weeks we will have to have a chat over HF to help you iron out those kinks with the HF setup.

  3. Hi Alex (also my sons name) I have just finished reading all you logs a week and a half WOW Nice you are living a dream.
My wife and I sail a Cataline 27 (Moon Dance) out of Salem Ma. My dream is to sail long and slow. In the next couple of years I hope to buy a blue water boat and when my youngest is in collage 5 years from now will be the time to make the break pull the plug from this high tech world I live in and sail. At 57 and still in good shape (wife much younger) we should have at least a few good years.
As I read your logs I could feel your happiness, frustration and perhaps even some sadness, great writing great reading.
    Keep going Alex keep sailing.

57 isint too old. I’ll be sailing till I drop!!

Why dont you take your youngest sailing???? I’m going with a 4 year old. Kits are great on the boat and you would give him some really good times :)

    Cheers.
