Land and Sea

one of those days !

I’m having one of those days.

I was painting the box for my new fuel polishing system and splattered paint on Spledids newly painted bow as well as in some wet varnish. I got pissed and decided to write a log and my computer “bit the big one”. Now I’m on Sam’s computer trying to figure out damage control. AHHHHHHH, I hate COMPUTERS!!!!

Anyway, I got a Racor 1000FH filter and a fuel pump to match its 180GPH Capacity. I built a box so I can go mobile with the whole thing and polish fuel.

I know Splendid’s fuel is pretty bad and I’m hoping to start polishing tomorrow. I’m going through racor filters pretty fast, and as most of you know, 90+ percent of diesel motor issues are fuel issues. Clean fuel is a MUST for your injectors and high-pressure pump.

I also received my little lunch box welder and tried it out yesterday, I can weld off of my gas generator, pretty cool. It just needs 20 amps to weld, how cool is that.

I’m not in too much of a mood to write. I’m really upset about my computer. It just locked up and died, ARRRRGGGGG!

I need a new laptop!

A friend sent me a really cool link to a blog of a boat in the Rio Dulce, check out http://www.indigomoon.us/

Cheers

  1. Time to haunt Craigslist for a new laptop. Use http://www.searchtempest.com to search multiple craigslists at once. I know there is a guy in Clearwater with some high-end units at decent prices.

I would recommend a used Panasonic Toughbook, with at least one external USB hard drive. Newegg.com has a terabyte drive for $120. When you get your computer(s) back up to snuff, use Ghost (a Symantics product) to make an an image of the entire computer in one big file as a backup. If the box ever goes down again, you can use Ghost and the USB drive to rewrite the entire image just as it was the day you did it. If you want any help, just let me know.

  3. That sounds like allot of work, just get a mac. All of your computer problems will go away, mine did. Never one crash, never one virus, nothing. I just turn it on, do what I have to do and get off. But I know you are on a budget and macs are not cheap. If you get a referbed one it will save you some bucks. I did and got the 3 year service plan (witch I have had for 2 and a half years and haven’t used yet). Good luck buddy.

    Sending good vibes,

Most navigational software does run on mac. Not to mention having to repurchasing the Adobe software(s). Macs are sweet though.

  5. Don’t mess around. Get a MAC. I travel with one. All the problems I see are with PCs. We are in Japan for half a year and the new MacBook is amazing. Worth every penny.

  6. well i´d love to give you some advice about computers but i got the same problem as you…so until you got your problem fixed go to a cybercofe or do the good old ways put the massege in a botle and trought over boar, never shots down or virus problem the only problem is the delivery lol ;)

  7. I’d love a mac, but I cant use any of my software on it (sat phone email, navagation, and such) I’d love a tuffbook too but they are expensive, I’ll need to find something cheap but powerful enough to edit HDV video. ARRRGGG!
I’m going to call DELL today and see how much they will charge to fix it.

If it is a software problem, such as the computer won’t boot up right, but otherwise turns on without any strange noises, look on Craigslist for a tech. With unemployment what it is in Fla., you should be able to find an accomplished tech to fix it for around $100.
If it is a hardware problem, bad sounds, doesn’t turn on etc. and you need to purchase a new laptop, I would recommend Toshiba as they are one of the few companies left that actually manufacture there own computers. Purchase the lowest price dual core you can find that can expand it’s RAM to at least 3 gigs. You can buy one with 1 gig of RAM and get 3 gigs from Newegg.com for $50 and save about $100 off the sticker price of a new laptop with that much memory preinstalled. Replacement hard drives are cheaper that way too.
I’m not trying to start a flame war or a PC vs Mac argument, but after having used Toshiba products for over a decade, I have NEVER had one ‘die’ on me. My Dells, HPs and (ugg) Compaqs have all become door stoppers within 3 years without exception.
If you are using Adobe CS4 (the newest) you will get approx an 18% increase in rendering speed with a 64 bit chip (Core2 Duo) even if you are using an old copy of XP. Vista is not included.

If you are really desperate, and it’s only a software problem, you can mail me the entire laptop, and as long as you cover shipping both ways and give me a week, I’ll fix it for free. If you want to call me and have me walk you through to see what the problem is (might be) you have me on Skype. Anytime is good after 10AM YOUR time.

Macs are nice, slick and run like a bull. The problem with using them for anything other than email and video is that the rest of the world doesn’t develop for them. They are only now starting to come into their own and it will be several years before the market will and can support the porting of previously only PC based software to the Apple O/S X platform.
For all you Mac fans who love the O/S, you can purchase a $500 Toshiba and an Airport card and run O/S X 1.3.9 and higher for 1/4 the price. Hit me up if you want to know how!

Try Craigslist. With the unemployment rate in Fla you should be able to find someone good for $20/hr. By no means use Geek Squad. Rip Off!

If you want to hit me up on I can talk you through troubleshooting the box. It might be an easy fix.

    Winchesters are very dependable :)

  12. So i spent an hour on the phone with Dell and they wouldnt let me into my Warentee. I did call the extended warentee dept, and was able to extend my warentee for $169.00 which I did :) I’ll call them in the morning and get an RMA number.

Computers and boats are such a big issue. As soon as I can afford it I’m upgrading to a toughbook, it’s really the only option. The only problem with Toughbooks is they are usually a generation or two behind in tech, and 2-3 thimes the price, you really are paying for the case but in a marine enviornment it really makes a differance.

Man, you have had some good threads going lately. Keep up the good work. I almost hate to bring it up but, does the video camera still work?

  15. After 4 years cruising full time and delivering sailboats I gave up trying to purchase a laptop that could survive the life and for the past two years I just backup everything and when the computer dies we toss it overboard and buy another cheap one hahahaha. The one I am using right now cost me 323.00 and does all I need and I know it will be deep sixed in a year probably. Call me crazy but I stress a lot less now.

reboot and hit f8, go into safe mode with networking, and run a spyware scan. go to pack.google.com and get spyware doctor- the best. also go into start>run>msconfig> and then do a diagnostic start. before shutting down, go to c:, right click for properties, and do a disk check. If this doesn’t work, email me and I will provide further instructions. Going forward, make sure you run spyware scan, windows updates, and disk defrag. Also go to filehippo and get cc cleaner…. cleans cookies, files, and the registry….

Yes, Mac’s are super, but with a few tools you can make your pc work well and last longer. defragging is so underrated, but it keeps your disk working properly. when it becomes too fragmented, then it is on the way to crashing. ALWAYS BACKUP!!! Any disk will fail, even a mac disk. Remember- macs now run on intel pc’s… Go to MOZY.com for free 2gb backup!!! Offsite and peace of mind!!!

  18. djdiatribe@gmail.com

I think we can all agree: nothing makes life simpler and more complicated than a computer.

  19. djdiatribe@gmail.com

P.S. – Don’t forget to turn on SPOT!
