I’ve really been driving myself crazy on trying to figure out the paint thing. There are so many products and options, most of them expensive. I know I’m going to use Interlux perfection on the hull. It’s a 2-part polyurethane, but close to $300.00 a gallon. Interlux also makes a 1-part polyurethane that is a bit cheaper, but still an expensive option. One of you guys (Thanks Martin) suggested I use Glidden floor and porch paint from home depot. It is an oil based 1-part polyurethane and to my understanding it’s what the commercial boats use. It’s $18 – 20.00 a gallon and comes in any color you want. And for the non-skid, it was suggested to me to use Black Diamond bead blast from Northern Tool, which is $7.00 for a 50lb bag.
I also need cleats for Splendid as she only has 1 cleat on the bow, and one on the stern. This became an issue when I was trying to get her secured for the hurricane. I just couldn’t get all the line around the cleats. I’m going to go with galvanized cleats which are about $15.00 each. Splendid may not have a “yacht finish” at the end of the day, but that’s not what I’m going for. When you’re doing serious cruising, the finish is the last thing you want to worry about (in my opinion).
The other big news is we are putting together BlueSphere energy. It’s still in its early stages, but if your looking for alternative energy options please check out www.bluesphereenergy.com.
