I’m DONE!!!

I’m going HOME,HOME,HOME,HOME,HOME!!!!!!!

I changed my flight from tomorrow night to tonight (5/4/09) I have a bunch of lay-overs, but I’m out on an Air Canada flight tonight, and should be in Miami before 10am in the morning. I’m so Excited! I happy the job is done. I’m really tired and have totally lost my voice. I saw the doctor again yesterday and she put me on a Z-Pack of antibiotics. I’m feeling better today but really drained. I’ll spend a few days in Ft. Myers with Sam and go to Splendid on Saturday.

These last few days of work have been hard. People have been irritable as well as myself. I’m sitting in the Explorer lounge waiting to go to customs at 6pm.

I’ll get out of my slip by the 10th and start heading back to the Ft. Myers area to get the canvas done. We’ll be in that area for a few weeks then we have to figure out where to go. Hurricane season starts July 1, but for all intensive purposes August – October are the months to avoid.

I don’t really know what my plans are but I’m sure they will unravel shortly.

Cheers everyone.

Sail far and live slowly.

– Alex

    Alex,
I’m surprised at you!! You’re always the type of person who seems to care about other people and to disdain the “rat race” society, and now here you are preparing to go spread your illness throught several airplanes and airports all across the country. That is just plain typical “rat race” society behaviour that I did not expect from you.

By the way, hurricane season officially starts on June 1st, not July, but you are correct that the worst is almost always from August to October.

    Get Well,
    Joe in Ft. Lauderdale

I myself am not a sailor yet, but growing up in upstate NY along th Erie Canal which runs from the St Lawerence seaway to the Hudson is very beutiful and I always thought if I was living on a boat I would go their for the hurricane season. Their are always good size ships coming throught and usually if your on the canal their is almost always free 24 hour docking. I just moved from their this winter to SoCal for work but in the summer and fall months me and my wife would go to see the ships and boats to see where they where from. Just a suggestion, either way good luck in your journeys, I enjoy reading your progress with Splendid.

  4. Alex I know what you mean. My wife and I work our butts off and we feel like crap.
We need to go sailing very soon and so do you.
    Tim.

  5. Tampa Bay is a great place to hang out during hurricane season. Hurricanes very rarely hit here, and pretty much have to cross land first if they do. There are so many smaller bays and coves and hidey-holes that you can find many places to secure Splendid.

The Cortez Yacht Basin (off Bridge Street on Anna Maria) has an excellent anchorage, with free public dinghy docks and showers. Plenty of boat yards in the area if you were looking for that sort of work, and places to do day-sail charters to (Egmont Key). The only downside is you have to pass under a drawbridge to get out of the ICW from there.

There are a few places in the Manatee River to anchor, that allow direct access to Tampa Bay and the Gulf. That’s where I’m planning to put Starquest

Dude: Are there not any canvas makers down in the Columbia and Panama area? I would think that they would be a lot cheaper as well.

    Cheers,

    Eric

P.S. Tampa gets its fair share of TS and Hurricanes.

Dude: Are there not any canvas makers down in the Tropics or are you just wanting to stay in the Florida area? I would think that if you did go south it would be a little cheaper as well. Just my 2 Cents.

    Cheers,

P.S. Tampa usually gets late season stroms.

  8. Hey Alex, who is doing your canvas work? I live in Alva, just up the river from Ft.Myers and I need to get some canvas work done,
If you do stay near the Ft.Myers area I keep my sailboat in a safe hurricane hole between both locks about 25miles from Ft.Myers east right near the Alva bridge,
I hope you guys get sailing soon as I keep up with you all here as I drive my Truck across the country and can’t wait till the winter time to do my sailing My season is just starting for my job,

    Take care,
    Ian

  9. Larissa,

We are getting all new canvas for free, she is one of Sam’s best friends. I’m getting Splendid ready for charters so it is an important thing. Trust me, I dont want to stay in the area, but I need to take advantage of this offer. I’m building a site for the canvas maker (Kerri) and putting her in the next film. She also does some of the best work I’ve ever seen.

    Ian
Feel free to call Kerri, here is her info:
