Windy!!!!

Rick flew out of Contadora yesterday. We were going to sail back to Panama but a low pressure system moved in and it’s been blowing like crazy. My buddy Gary just called and said it’s really uncomfortable at the Balboa yacht club, and boats have been slamming into each other. There is no good place to be in Panama City in a southern blow/swell, it’s good to be on the lee side of Contadora.

Cass and I are watching lots of movies, cleaning up, and cooking, we will head back to Panama as soon as this system passes.

I’m working on uploading a bunch of pictures, but it‘s so windy I don’t want to leave the boat.

Peace, Love, and hold on to your hats.

Another GR8 Day!!!

Rick and I are having a blast. He seems really happy just to be away and be able to relax for a while. We’ve been spear-fishing every day. Yesterday we had a great sail from Isla Contadora to Isla Ampon.

I wrote about this “Amazing women I met” about a month ago? Well, we have become quite close, actually she flew into Contadora on Wednesday. We are all having a fantastic time, the energy onboard is fantastic. Tomorrow we are off to Contadora again, then back to Panama on the 15th, Rick flies out on the morning of the 16th.

I need to hop a bus to Costa Rica so I can get a new stamp (3 months) back into Panama. After that, Cass and I are heading back out to Espirito Santo to careen Namaste and finish shooting the next DVD. I will be so nice to have someone to hold the camera, and get a shot of Namaste sailing by.

The next DVD should be available by February.

The smiles are long on Namaste this evening, especially mine.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts everyone.

Rain, rain, go away!

Rick had the flu before he showed up and he’s still a bit sick. He says he’s still enjoying himself. Rick is buying a boat to go cruising when he gets back home, he’s pretty psyched!!!!

We crossed the bay of Panama (9.5 hrs) yesterday. The day was pretty smooth with the exception of me dropping my pillow in the water, I got it back. Dolphins followed us for much of the trip playing off the bow. They made sure we anchored safely off of Isla Contadora.

This morning we watched whales breach the sea just a mile away. After coffee we went for a snorkel. I shot a snapper and a small grouper which we will have for dinner. A white tip shark broke the surface just as we were getting back in the dingy, strangely close (about 5 feet away). He was just curious.

It’s raining and the water is murky as a result. I’m hoping tomorrow brings a sunny day.

Peace, love, and white tips.

Alex

Off in the am.

My charter (Rick) showed up last night. We’ll be heading for Contadora in the morning. I’m sooo lucky that I only get really cool people who come to visit. Rick and I are getting along really well.

I just noticed yesterday that a big chunk of my toe-rail is missing; I think it happened at the dock the other day, or I got hit when I was off the boat “GRRRRRRRRR”!!!!!!

I’m still suffering from verbal constipation and will be back on track shortly, there is just so much going on.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts everyone.

Alex

The girl…

Yesterday I brought Namaste to the dock for fuel & water. I also provisioned up for my guest. My guest however has the flu and is not arriving until the 7th. I’ll be in Panama for a few more days. I’ll probably be heading for the Perlas Islands on Sunday or Monday.

Remember In my September 18th log I wrote about a woman I met, well we’re spending a bunch of time together, and I don’t really know how to write about it. I’m sure it will come to me soon though. For now all I can say is “WOW” and I need to keep it private, however I can assure you my smile is quite long.

After I’m done with my charter I’ll be going back out to the Islands to finish up my next DVD. The next DVD really focuses on the day-to-day details of the cruising life. How to catch water, maintain a good diet, fishing techniques, boat maintenance and so on. I’m hoping to have it finished by the time I leave Panama in December.

It’s a beautiful day.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

Productive, productive, productive!

I sold my extra inflatable today ($300), and traded a windless (seatiger 555) for a custom set of mast steps. I also bought 3 gallons of international red bottom paint for $40.00 a gallon.

I’ve been crazy re-organizing the boat, and making the most out of my new found storage space. My extra inflatable was under the V-birth.

After I get back from the islands (5 th – 16 th) I’m going to install my new mast steps. I have everything to do my bottom job now but it is being pushed until my next trip out to the Perlas.

I’m dropping of my original set of sails to be mended so I’ll have an extra jib & main waiting to go if necessary. I’m also checking all of my thru-hulls, and replacing hose clamps where necessary.

I hope every one is well and had a fantastic weekend.

Cheers.

Peace, love & Coconuts.

Hung-over

Just a little hung over.

I had a great night here at the Balboa Yacht club last night. Good friends, drink, warm weather and laughter, who could ask for anything more?

I’m staying here until the 5th. I have a guest coming from the 5th for 10 days. We are going to do Panama City, and the Las Perlas.

I’ve made a decision on the still camera I want; it’s a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2K. It’s a 10mp camera, and I can even use it to take HD video clips for my next DVD, how cool is that? It’s a bit more then I wanted to spend (about $600 with a 1GB card), but I really want to get good images for Latitudes & Attitudes, the site, and I never want to forget this wonderful ride I’m on. Poor with a good camera works for me!

That’s all 4 today.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

Well I figured out what to do.

My visa is up at the end of October and I need to leave the country (just me not the boat). For $30.00 I can take a bus to Costa Rica for a day, stamp out, and stamp back in. That will allow me the extra time to leave for Ecuador in December as planned.

One can stay indefinitely in Panama like this, but all these countries are different. In Ecuador you can only have 6 months in a calendar year, same as Colombia. The up-side is there is always someone you can pay-off to get around things, corruption can be quite handy.

I’m getting my main back today, and it’s likely I’m taking another charter in the Las Perlas. I’ll most likely be sailing there by Tuesday.

Well, I’m off to run around town. I need to go to the hardware store, the boat store, drop off laundry, and do some provisioning.

Hope everyone is well.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts!

Alex

Sails

I’m going stir crazy staying in Panama, I want to sail far. I’m toying with the Idea of visiting Costa Rica in a few weeks.

I went through all my sails yesterday. I have 2 Yankees, an extra main, and jib. My extra main needs a bit of work, and my extra jib is “Hank-on” and will not fit on my roller furling. I’m going to try and get those sails in order soon.

This morning I’m taking my main down and bringing it in for repairs (not too much work).

I have a line on some bottom paint, and I’ll be off as soon as my sail is out of the shop, hopefully by Monday. Then I’ll careen Namaste on the beach in Espirito Santo. A lot of people have asked that I take pictures, I will.

I can’t wait to start shooting fish again.

Hope everyone is well.

Alex

I?ve been in very strange place!!!

I can’t really write, or talk about where I am. I’m verbally constipated, and I’m sorry for the lack of logs. I’m thinking of doing some off the wall traveling and sailing for Kirabiti which is on the equator in the Pacific in the middle of nowhere, no one goes there. It might make for some good video.

I’m having my mainsail fixed up day after tomorrow and re-going through the boat. Panama City is being tuff on me and I want to go, go GO, NOW!!!

I’ll try and communicate more over the fowling week.

Peace, love, and who the hell knows?

Sail far, and live slowly.

Alex

More lightning!

Kirk left on Sunday, we had a really great time. We spent time in Espirito Santo, Contadora, and Panama City.

When Kirk and I were at the bar at the Balboa yacht club I met a really beautiful and interesting woman and I’ve been spending a fair amount of time with her.

We were on the boat today having a cup of coffee and the strangest thing happened. We saw a flash of light and turned to look at one of the bronze ports on the starboard side of Namaste. We saw a line of lightning dancing on the inside of the boat about 2 feet away from me, then CRACK! I flinched and almost dropped to the cabin sole. Lightning struck inside the boat.

Everything seems fine though, how can that be? Lightning is a strange beast. All the electronics seem to be okay. I don’t understand it one bit, all I know is I’m looking forward to dry season again.

I laughed and told her we had great chemistry, was that a cheesy line?

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Lightning!

Alex

Boarded at sea!

I made a decision last night; I’m going to Panama City to buy bottom paint. I have a little money (about 2K) and I want to hold on to it. Hauling and painting Namaste will end up costing me around $500.00. I’ve decided to buy the anti-fowling paint (About $200.00), and careen Namaste. Careening is when you lay a boat on its side and let the tide go out. There is a perfect beach in Espirito Santo. The sand is soft, and we are having around 16 foot tides, careening should save me around $300.00.

I left Contadora for Panama City around 3am this morning.

Just after sun-up, I was approached by a “Miami-vice” looking, go-fast, Panama Coast Guard vessel. They wanted to board me, and obviously, I let them. The first question they asked was “Do you have any arms”? I said “no”! I don’t know if I mentioned this but I sold my hand gun to another cruiser when I was in the San Blas, I really needed the money. They were very nice and polite when they boarded the boat. They asked if they could look around, “Please, have at it” I replied. The first thing the guy found was a plastic bag with my flair gun in it. It has a 357 insert for my flair gun, and 4 rounds. How am I going to explain this I thought? He put it down not noticing the rounds. They searched through the boat a bit as if they were looking for something. I showed him the latest issue of Latitudes & Attitudes with my “Exploring Panama” article. I told him I was a writer, and asked if they would mind me taking a picture. They didn’t want a picture taken. They filled out some paper work and quickly left me alone. All in all it wasn’t a bad experience for my first boarding.

I arrived at the Balboa Yacht Club just after noon. After writing this log I’m going to crash for a few hours.

Hope everyone is well.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

Back to Contadora.

The water clarity here is really bad .We are having the highest tides of the year which is also washing up tons of floating plastic rubbish, it’s sad. Please be cautious when you shop. Excess packaging is floating across the sea, and ending upon the beaches here, it breaks my heart, Kirk’s too.

I’m going to hand the log over to Kirk, he wants to write.

___

To say that anyone who can, should come and experience this is an understatement. It is a wild place that needs to be experienced to be believed. Groups of Jacks rush from beneath the boat every few minutes and thrash the surface. Lightning flashes during the night while we share dinner with other cruisers. I cannot accurately relay the incredible experience this has been. Alex share his boat and the cruising experience with a limited few – if you are thinking of doing this I highly recommend that you come and see what it is really all about.

My only sad piece in all of this is the plastic that we see – it is so needless and scars such pristine surroundings.

Kirk

___

I’ve made up my mind to get really rolling on releasing my next DVD, I’m hoping to have it done in a few months. It’s time to really get to work. I have a few DV tapes that are broken. I think my last camera did something to them and snapped the tapes. I need to find someone in Panama city to fix them.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts everyone.

– Alex

All is good in the world.

Or should I say, “All is good in my world”!

Kirk is an awesome guy and seems especially happy to be here.

Yesterday we motored to Espirito Santo watching the whales play and breach the sea around us. Last night we had a nice trigger dinner with curry rice, and salad.

This morning we met some other cruisers from Australia, and walked around the island together. We will all have drinks tonight.

It’s noon, and we are drinking sangria with ice, life is good!

I’ll ask Kirk to write a log in a day or two.

I have a few people interested in chartering in October. Kirk says I should tell everyone how easy it is to get here, and it really is.

Happy Monday everyone.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

Espirito Santo

My charter (Kirk)will be here in about 20 minutes, then we are off to Espirito Santo.

It´s starting to feel like home here. I still really miss the San Blas, and living with the Kuna, but it´s more of a memory now.

It looks like I have another charter for October which is really cool. This is such a great place to show people.

Have a great Sunday everyone, good day to go sailiung isint it?

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

Big, BIG TRIGGER!!!

I went spear fishing first thing this morning and shot the biggest trigger I’ve ever seen. After cleaning him I threw the scraps in the water. A few minutes later I saw a huge snapper, around 50lbs.

I quietly got in the water and gave “sneaking up” my best shot, didn’t work, he saw me and took off like a shot.

I spent the day doing some wiring and cleaning.

David posted some new pictures in the gallery if anyone is interested in seeing them.

If anyone is interested in visiting, speak up. I’ll be leaving the Perlas in a few months; and this is a great place to come for a charter.

Some of the old subscribers might remember my buddy Nick. He finally finished his boat and is about to go cruising, good on ya mate!

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Laundry day.

Click to view full size image

It’s really nice to have internet, however the price is high. The anchorage here really STINKS!!!! I didn’t sleep all night due to the wind blowing from the west, and the current flowing from the south, ARRRGGGGG!!!!!

My friends on “ornen” bought a house on Contadora and told me to bring my laptop and laundry today (They have a machine). Doing 2 loads in a bucket is an hour + affair, and hard work. The locals do laundry in the river, and it’s quite the social event. Lots of gossip and water fights with the kids. It’s fun to join them and be the wayward gringo.

I really hope the swell relaxes and I can sleep later today, or tonight. I grabbed a mooring, but I’m thinking of changing locations, and putting out a stern hook.

I just got a message from Roger, he is buying all new chain (5/16 BBB), and I’m going to try and swing buying his old 5/16 BBB (300 feet).

Hope everyone is well, enjoy the day and do something for yourself tonight.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Well I got up and shot a nice trigger this morning.

I have 3 days to clean up the boat for my new guest, and stock the fridge with some fresh fish.

I’m sending in pictures to update the photo gallery, they should be up in a few days.  Thanks for all the info on Steve Irwin, what a horrible accident. I swam over a large ray this morning and thought how docile and friendly it looked. They are such beautiful creatures.

It’s cool to be in Contadora on the internet, I’m checking ebay for used SSB’s, I’m also looking for a new digital still camera.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts everyone.

Alex

Steve Iriwin

Man I can’t tell you how sorry I am to hear of Steve Irwin’s death.

Does anyone have the particulars on how it happened? I know it was from a large stingray, but how did it happen? I see, and hunt around large rays every day, and I catch them from the boat. I know a lot of people who suffer from stings after stepping on them in the water, and one killed a buddy of mines dog. I’ve never seen, or heard of one attacking though.

I know Steve really had a passion for the outdoors & nature the way I do. And if anything, I’m sure he died doing what he wanted to be doing which is really important.

My biggest fear is passing away in a hospital, or of old age. I believe in quality, and not quantity of life. My buddy Roger saw me swimming during a squall in heavy lightning. He said “you know you really shouldn’t do that, it’s dangerous”. My reply was if “I can’t swim in the sea with sharks, or during a squall, I might as be in a cubicle”, he understood. During a squall I take a shower on deck, lather up, and jump in the sea to rinse off the soap. The water seems warmer then usual due to the temperature of the air & rainwater. I then rinse again in the rainwater on deck, it’s an awesome shower.

Some guys from California (Bobby & Dave (on Baravey)) came into the anchorage yesterday. We stayed up drinking and telling stories of sailing the Channel Islands, and our home waters. Bobby (the captain) is really hung over, and David really needs to get to Contadora to catch a plane home. Dave is chartering Namaste for a trip to Contadora. A few extra bucks are always welcome. I don’t know if I’ll come back here or not. I need to be in Contadora on Friday to pick up my guest.

Man it’s a bummer hearing about Steve Irwin, I really enjoyed his work.

Cheers Everyone.

Peace, Love, and a toast to Steve Irwin.

Alex

Monday morning.

I’m all inspired to start work this Monday morning. I’m going to get in the dingy with my camera package, motor up the river into the jungle, and shoot some great video. I need to shoot the intro and ending to another segment for Latitudes & Attitudes.

It looks like I’ll be alone here for a while (no other boats). I love my time with my friends; I also love my time in seclusion with nature.

I’m totally out of fish and bait. I usually keep the scraps to bottom fish from the boat. After shooting (video) today I’ll go spear fishing for a few hours and try to stock up the fridge. It rained a lot and the water is kind of murky. I’m planning on visiting one of the outer islands here. The outside (deep water) islands always have the bigger fish, bigger sharks too.

I hope everyone gets off on the right foot this week.

Life is good!

Peace, Love & Coconuts.

P.S. If you have a website and want to put up a projectbluesphere.com banner, please visit neo.projectbluesphere.com/banners

Alex

What keeps me up at night?

It’s not the coffee; I often have nights I can’t sleep. Last night I didn’t get to sleep till 5am, just tossed & turned I hate that. I probably would have slept around 3 but a big squall rolled through, and I needed to attend to it. I think it’s partially my mattress, I’m going to buy a foam topper when I get back to panama.

I think I’ll take an easy day today. I know I have to clean the contacts on the starter, and I’m going to pull the SSB apart.

Don left this morning, and Roger is out tomorrow, I’ll have the anchorage to myself. I’ll leave here on Friday to pick up my guest Kirk on Saturday.

I’m out of fish, and with all the rain I don’t think I could see the tip of my spear gun, I’ll have to rely on the line today.

I hear the triggers nibbling on the hull, time to get the line out.

I hope everyone is well.

Alex

Rain!!!

Well my tanks are full again. The wind picked up to about 30 from the south and was followed by just enough rain to fill my tank.

I charged the batteries for a few hours today, and cleaned the water-line. I also scrubbed the foredeck and cockpit during the rain storm. I finished tuning up my guitar, played horribly for a few minutes and put in a movie (borrowed from Roger).

I don’t know if there are any other really bad “B” movie fans like me, but every once in a while I come across a “wonderfully horrible” B movie. Today I found a great one. “Kill Cruise” with Elizabeth Hurley, it must have been her first. It all took place at sea (on a sailboat) between Gibraltar, and some ware in the Atlantic. Everyone died.

I have another movie to watch tonight “ Captain Corelli’s MANDOLIN”, I hope it’s better.

I’m going to cook the other half of my fat trigger, drink some wine, and chill for the rest of the evening.

Did anything happen in the world today, if so, send me an instant message.

Cheers all.

Alex

Today was a ?ME? day.

I started drinking coffee 4 days ago, and I love it, “MOO WHO HAHAHA”! I’m having a cup in the morning, and another early, to mid-afternoon. I still have some good coffee from Colombia.

Today was cool. I got up and went spear fishing for 4 hours. I shot 2 triggers, a snapper, and something I don’t know what it is, looks good though.

I gave the mystery fish and a trigger to Roger, and the snapper to Don. I kept the fatter trigger for myself.

After cleaning my fish, I strung up my guitar and lost interest before I got it tuned. I took a nap.

Now I’m up again, drinking my 2 nd cup of “Joe”, and gearing up to gear down.

You know, one might think I’m not productive out here, living this “life of Riley”. But in the last three and a half years, I’ve lived in 4 countries, learned another language, produced a really cool DVD, quite smoking, became a good spear-fisherman and diesel mechanic, a better sailor, started writing for a really cool magazine, made oodles of friends, and I’m on TV. I need more coffee! I’m getting stressed just thinking about it. Maybe I’ll take another nap too, just kidding, I’m well rested.

I’ve also learned to live a full and good life with little money. All in all, I’d say the last three and a half years were fantastic.

This is a really good cup of coffee : )

I borrowed a good old movie from Roger last night “Gandhi”, now there was a guy who figured it all out.

May we all find peace.

Peace, love, and coffee!

Alex

It?s always something!

The funny thing is all the cruising problems are starting not to bother me. Usually when the oil pressure quits or the side-band dies (like this morning), I freak out a bit and think it’s the end of the world. Truthfully, I’m getting to the point that it just all seems normal. I always find a work-around.

I don’t know that I’ll replace the side-band, and I traded my portable receiver a few months back for a storm tri-sail, so no more weather fax. Roger told me after the lightning strike that “even though the SSB came back to life, don’t expect it to work for that long”. I’ll open it later today and take a look, but I don’t know anything about radios.

“Plan B’s” refrigeration went out 2 days ago and Mavis has been cooking large dinners for the anchorage (Don, Roger, and myself) for the past 2 nights. It’s been nice, but a bummer about the fridge.

My motor is still soaking in diesel, I’m going to finish flushing it this morning, fill it with new oil, and replace the filter again.

It’s kind of gray today and a bit cooler which will make for a good “project day”. I’m out of fish so I’ll probably go hunting later (I hate canned food).

Cheers everyone.

Thanks for reading.

Peace, Love, & Coconuts.

Alex

Swiss Watch?

Never again will I say my motor runs like a Swiss watch.

Not more then an hour after I wrote the last log did my engine throw me for a loop. I wanted to move my anchor a few yards away, and when I started the motor the oil pressure alarm never went off, the low oil pressure light stayed on, and the oil pressure gauge was reading zero. I quickly shut down the motor. I thought “This can’t be right”. I pulled the sender out of the motor to really check if pressure was in the system. There was plenty of oil, but when I started the motor no oil flowed out of the hole, $#!@, the oil pump is shot!

Gary and Roger were here shortly after and we were all pouring over my shop manual. We all decided that this was really bad, and that I might need to be towed back to Panama if the weather continued to be “windless”.

Roger decided that there was sludge in the oil that was blocking the valve in the oil pump. Gary and Roger suggested filling the motor with diesel to thin the oil, change it along with the oil filter and hope for the best. We let the diesel sit in the motor for an hour, and I turned the key. What a mess in my engine room. The clog freed itself and diesel & oil flowed out of the sender hole. I’m back in business, YEEEEEHAAAAA!

Tomorrow I’m going to run a bit more diesel through the system to make sure it’s clean, and change the filter & oil again.

I tell you, the things you learn when you’re cruising.

I think the motor is doing okay for 30 years old.

Peace, Love, and “You wouldn’t believe the mess I have to clean up in the engine room”

Alex

The river!

My buddy Roger is here. Roger is the guy who wrote “Plot your Course to Adventure” which is for sale on the BlueSphere store page. He also used to own the Sam L. Morse Company which builds Bristol Channel Cutters. He built “Nereus” (his Channel cutter) while he owned the company. Nereus is a boat I surly would like to own, and in my years out here, the one boat I would really like to own.

Roger is settling down in Panama and says he will not be crossing any more oceans. He’s selling Nereus ($250K) to trade down to a day sailor.

Anyway we went up the river exploring yesterday. What a beautiful place. Lots of fresh water & wildlife, I shot a lot of video.

Today I’m planning on cleaning up a bit more and going spear fishing at hi tide. I’m having problems with my Sat-Phone so if I disappear for a few weeks it’s the phone, not me.

I’ve got two lines off the stern, and listening to “Cake”, it’s a gre8 day.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

The sailing Gods liked David.

David and I had a pretty spectacular week when it comes to weather. The sun wasn’t too hot, nor did it rain much with the exception with last night. When we pulled into Contadora it started raining buckets. David and I caught about 60 gallons of fresh water for the tank.

Anchoring was a bit of a nightmare. I set the hook off the beach, and then decided it was to close to the rocks. I pulled in the anchor, and reset it about 20 yards away. Then a plane landed on the strip and complained that the mast was interfering with the planes landing path, I pulled up the anchor again. There were about 15 empty moorings so I grabbed one. The wind kicked up and an anchored sailboat got kind of close so I moved to another mooring. At around 21:00 a fishing boat came and kicked me off of the mooring and I went far out in the current and dropped the hook, ARRRGGGG! I HAVE NO WINDLESS!!! But my arms are getting bigger!

David brought me copies of the Latitudes & Attitudes TV show. Even though I’ve been sending them video for over a year, this was the first chance I got to see it. What a great show, if you get the “Water Channel” I highly recommend you check it out, I’m sure you could get more info on show times at www.seafaring.com.

Anyway I’m back in Espirito Santo. It’s raining pretty hard, and it’s shaping up to be a peaceful night. I had some Trigger fish left over from the other night and it’s on the stove simmering in onions, garlic, and curry. I just poured a deep glass of Cabernet, Yummy!

I’ll be posting more logs now that I’m on my own again. I asked David to write about his experience on Namaste over the past week, he said he’ll email it to me from home. I’ll post it as a log next week.

I have a bunch of boat projects to do before I have another visitor in 2 weeks. I need to change the oil, fix the autopilot, and work on the starter. When I was in Contadora the motor didn’t want to start, but after tapping the starter with a screwdriver, it started, I need to look into that. I’m also planning on shooting a bunch of video.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts everyone.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Alex.

2 fast!

I can’t believe this past week has gone so fast. David and I have had a blast. Yesterday we caught the “Crackin”. I speared a small snapper and we put it on a hook and went bottom fishing off of Namaste. Whatever we caught was huge, there was no way of reeling in an inch of this thing with my 75 pound test line, it must have been a large shark or ray.

We’ve been eating fresh fish all week, but last night we had a really wonderful Lasagna dinner on “Plan B” with Gary & Mavis.

Today we are heading back to Contadora so David can catch his flight back into Panama City in the morning. I’ll be returning to Espirito Santo to get some shooting done.

I think David is going home well rested. It was really fantastic meeting my friend after knowing and working with him for 3 years.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

Hide the RUM!!!

It’s been strange having a friend like David for the past 3 years, this is the first time we’ve met. As you know David runs the website.

We’ve been having a great time. We caught a Mahi-Mahi on the way from Contadora on Sunday, and we’ve been eating it for the past few days. Last night we polished 2 bottles of my special coconut rum, and today I’ve been pretty slow. David is doing better then I am. I wish someone would hide the Rum : )

I shot a large trigger the other day with my new spear gun. He was about 25 feet down, and took the spear into a cave before managing to wiggle off of the spear tip. I could see him moving just inside the cave and grabbed him.Well it wasn’t the trigger I grabbed it was the tale of a small (4 feet)nurse shark. He came screaming out of the other end of the cave not too happy with my actions.

Tomorrow David and I will explore the surrounding islands.

I know I’m behind on some emails and will get back to everyone shortly.

Hope everyone is well.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

My friends boat

I just found out my friend Aki on “Liberty” almost lost his boat. That big squall I went through a week or so ago with Buddy strengthened by the time it hit Panama (50 Kts). Aki was off the boat, and when he returned his Catalina 42 was on the rocks and holed. I local in a power boat was pulling it off the rocks after about 30 minutes of beating.

The water damage inside isn’t so bad, but there is a crack where the keel joins the hull, and a good size hole. He’s hauled out now and believes it will be back in the water in a few weeks.

What rotten luck.

I’m really excited my friend David is showing up today. I caught my first two lobsters in the Pacific this morning; I’m seeing it as a good sign for our trip.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love & Lobsters!

Alex

Bot-Fly

I’ve been in work mode lately. I’m just about finished with two more episodes for the Latts and Atts show along with another article.

My hands don’t seem to want to heal very easily. My cuts are going white, and are becoming quite painful. I really, REALLY, don’t like taking antibiotics, but I started a round today. I want my body to be able to handle whatever I throw at it, but this is getting ridiculous.

I shot the biggest snapper I’ve ever shot today, but the dull tip of my spear gun didn’t penetrate his scales, oh well, the big one got away! After that I went to the beach to do laundry and bath in the stream and was attacked by a really nasty looking fly, got a good bite. I hope it wasn’t a bot-fly. Bot-flys are pretty nasty. They inject you with their larva which grows under your skin till it does the alien thing and bursts out, YUCK. I’ve had friends who have had them, not a pleasant experience.

I’m heading for Isla Ampon, or Contadora tomorrow, my buddy arrives on Saturday.

That’s it for today; I hope everyone is well,

Peace, love, and Coconuts.

Alex

It was pretty quiet today.

I caught a few jacks for lunch, but worked most of the day. It’s really hot with no wind, a breeze would be nice.

My fresh water pump died again yesterday. I tore it apart again this morning and have it working again; the question is for how long. If there was one piece of equipment on board that has given me more trouble and heart ache, it would be my Shurflow water pump. I must have had it apart 3 dozen times since I left Mystic, ARGGGG!!!

Im going to Isla Espirito Santo to shoot some video later. I finished 2 more segments for Latitudes and Attitudes TV but need to go shoot the endings, Ill get some mangoes and coconuts while Im at it.

I gathered 20 or so scallops yesterday, and Im going to make a nice salad for dinner. Buddy left a copy of Carl Hiaasens (Skinny Dip) onboard; maybe I will start it tonight.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

Today was a good day.

I listened to music all day and cleaned the boat.

I went spear fishing a few hours ago and found my favorite spot in Espirito Santos. When I was hunting around the reef I was joined by a Black Tip. He made me a bit nervous because he was on the larger side but we hunted the reef together. I shot a nice little snapper for dinner; I don’t know what he got. I left pretty quickly after my prize.

My buddy Don saw a crocodile here a few months ago. Sharks don’t bother me so much, but crocodiles are a different story. They don’t attack when they are hungry, they attack when they see prey, and a 4 foot croc will attack a 6 foot man.

My friend David is bringing me a new spear gun next Saturday. As soon as I can I am going to buy a .38 caliber power head (Bang Stick) for my spear gun. Sharks do not usually bother people, but the people who usually get bit are spear fisherman. I need some time on the internet to find one. Sometimes you can find them on Ebay, but I always miss the bid. If I need to I want to be able to put a bullet in whatever attacks me. I will probably never need it, but I think it is better to have one and not need it, then need it and not have one, know what I mean?

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend.

Peace, Love, and Sharks.

Back in Espirito Santo (Holy Ghost)!

Buddy took off today. We left Isla Ampon early this morning. We had a pretty nasty squall yesterday. It blew a bit over 40, but for an hour and a half. The wind waves got nasty and we rocked for a few hours after the squall passed. It was worse in Contadora. I saw 2 large boats up on the rocks today. One was over 100 feet and spilled oil all over the beach, ARG!!! I really wanted to see the internet as well, but the internet and power are out on the island, Oh well!

I had a really good time with Buddy. We spend a lot of time with my friends on Contigo, and Plan B. Yesterday we checked out a nurse shark breeding ground, and a local village, Buddy bought a small pearl.

I need to focus on work for a week and decided to return to Espirito Santo. It’s very protected here. My friend David is flying into Contadora next Saturday. He will be here for a week. This week I need to knock out an article and two segments for L&A TV.

It’s hard for me to write a lot of logs while I have company, I’m kind of distracted, sorry, I will post more this week.

My hands are healing well; I need to get some good dive gloves.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Infection!

A few days before Buddy showed up (last Saturday), I cut up my hands pretty well. I cut a good chunk off the tip of my finger, as well as enduring two other good cuts. I did this while I was spear fishing. I shot a snapper and the spear didn’t go all the way through it. Worried that I would loose the fish, I grabbed the spear, and jammed the fish against a rock with full force. My hand slid down the spear, and the barbs that hold the rubber in place sliced through my flesh, OUTCH! The water around me was red with my blood, but I did keep my fish.

I don’t usually do much about cuts and scrapes; I just let nature take its course. Well the smallest cut got pretty infected, my whole hand started to itch. Yesterday I had to take a scalpel and lance, and drain the wound. I’m going to try and stay out of the water for a few days.

Buddy has been a great guest. I have many friends that charter and don’t nearly have the luck I do. All my charters have turned into friends and we have had a great time. I guess it’s because people kind of know me before they come for a week.

Anyway, we moved yesterday, and are anchored off of Isla Ampon. We had a fresh mackerel dinner on Plan B last night, and will most likely visit my friends on Contigo tonight.

Hope everyone is well.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Rain!!!

Buddy and I had a really good rain last night, lots of lightning too. After that we watched (Black Hawk Down).

Today we went tooling around with Gary from Plan B. We walked up into the Jungle a bit in a fresh water stream.

It’s a really beautiful place here in Espirito Santo, but the water is not clear enough for me to hunt. Tomorrow we will head for Isla Ampon where I will shoot many fish.

Peace everyone.

Alex

Espirito Santo!

My guest (Buddy) arrived last night. We had a pretty uncomfortable night anchored in Contadora, there was a strong wind from the North. I didn’t get to sleep till around four in the morning.

We left Contadora around nine this morning. We saw a bunch of whales and traveled along side Plan B. We arrive at Isla Espirito Santo about four hours later, what a beautiful anchorage this is. Mavis and Gary invited us for a superb dinner on Plan B. Buddy brought my new camera and I’ve been like a kid in a candy store playing with it every chance I get, it actually takes pretty decent stills.

Tomorrow we are going to explore some of the islands and gather Mango, passion fruit and coconuts; I hear there are some banana trees as well.

I’m supposed to meet my friends on Contigo at isla Ampon on Wednesday.

I will ask buddy to write a few words about the experience before he leaves next Saturday.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, love, and coconuts.

I really got stung last night!

When I was shooting fish last night I got caught in a school of very small jellies, I never laid eyes on them, but boy did they sting. They got my face and left upper side. I sprayed down with vinegar when I got back which helped a bunch. I still have a few red marks, but no pain this morning. I did get 2 nice fish for dinner.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I know some of you have been waiting for Rogers book (Plot your Course to Adventure) to come out, check the store section of the website, it is available. It’s a fantastic technical book covering everything from anchoring to worm gears. If you are planning on cruising, this is a must have for your ships library.

Cheers everyone.

Alex

A beautiful day sailing!

I had a steady 10 knots of breeze form the South West today. I motor sailed for half the day, and sailed the rest. The crossing took about 10 hours.

My fishing line got tangled in my prop today and I had to go swimming in the middle of the bay of Panama, I lost a great lure, ARGGG, the one I caught the Dorado on.

The water is crystal, the sky blue, and the sounds of the city have been replaced by the singing of birds. The locals here are quite friendly, smiles and waves fill the day. Occasionally a local ponga will approach Namaste with a basket of fish, fruit, or lobster for sale or trade. This is the pace I like living my life. I want to grow old living the island life, the question is “where”?

It’s getting late. My refrigeration is still out so I’m going to go spear fishing before the sun goes down.

Cheers everyone, I hope your day was as sweet as mine.

Electronics & boats don’t mix. I’m much more careful then most and keep everything electronic (Laptop, camera, video cameras) in Pelican (Water-proof) cases.

My trusty Fuji Finepix 4700 took its last photo today. I’ve wanted something different (better) anyway, as I’m submitting pictures to Latitudes & Attitudes.

My new laptop (Dell Inspiron E1505) has an extended 4 year warrantee, and I need to buy one for my new video camera (Sony HDR-HC1).  Sony and Dell are good companies as far as having good foreign tech support.

I’m off in the morning and should be anchored back in Contadora by late afternoon tomorrow.

I spiced 3 bottles of rum today. I take a really cheep rum (Seko), re-bottle it, add sugar, a dash of chili, and an orange. It takes about a month, but boy does it turn out nice, yummy sun-downer!

The picture is an out of focus, Panama city.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Mechanically separated chicken?

I was doing some cleaning yesterday, and for some reason, I read the ingredients of a can of “Treet” baked ham. The first ingredient is mechanically separated chicken, what on earth is that? Do they kill the chickens before they enter “The Machine”? The second thing I noticed is it says “Treet, Virginia baked ham taste”. Where do they get the taste? I don’t think I’ll be eating much more Treet “luncheon loaf”, YUCK!!!

Yesterday was a day of spinning wheels. I brought my outboard to the Yamaha dealer the day before only to pick it up, seeing it had not been touched. They said that the 2 screws I can’t get out is a “maintenance issue” not covered under warrantee. I said I should be able to take the cover off of my 5 month old motor (for the first time) so that I could perform my maintenance, they didn’t seem to care. The motor runs fine, I just can’t access it. I’ll try and put a torch to it in the islands and try again. Three hours of time and twenty bucks in cab fare down the tubes. Everything else I tried to do just didn’t seem to work out, so instead of fighting it, I did some writing.

There is a possibility my guest will not be able to make it on Saturday due to a Tropical Storm (Chris) heading for Florida. I’ll most likely be off in the morning anyway. I need to do a little more shopping today (fresh stuff), as well as take on a little more water. I’m hoping for wind, but it’s such a scarce commodity in the bay of Panama.

Peace, Love, and, Do they mechanically separate cows or are they to big?

– Alex

almost ready to shove-off.

I wish I could write an interesting log every night but sometimes I just don’t have the material.

My day was filled with running around. I went to the local fishing shop to buy some more lures, line & weights. I dropped off my outboard at the local Yamaha shop, and went to the Mega Depot (Like Costco) to stock up with stuff ($166) for the following month.

Tonight I had dinner at my buddy Roger’s place along with and a nice South African couple (Chris & Lynn). We had seared Tuna that Roger caught on his way back from the Islands, it was quite good (Yellow Fin). We also watched a documentary on the American Invasion of Panama which was quite interesting.

Tomorrow I’ll visit the supermarket, buy 15 gallons of diesel, and pick up my laundry. My plan is to shove-off for Contadora Wednesday, or possibly Thursday, depending on weather.

I cant wait to get back in the water to shoot a fish : )

Peace, Love, and Coconuts everyone.

Have a great week.

Dan’s Log

I had asked Dan to write a log explaining his experience here on Namaste, he wrote the following. He did in fact help with the dishes though.**********Regrettably I have left Alex and Namaste.  I had a Fantastic week.  It was good toget away, relax and just enjoy the peace and quiet that the ocean has to offer. Alex is a great host and a good cook.  The daily activities consisted of fishing, swimming, cleaning fish, islandexploring, and reading.  Alex did all of the cooking and dish washing.  That wasnice! There was adventure as well.  We experienced the indirect lightning strike, two tropical waves, one day of torrential rain that lasted for at least 4 hours, andanother day of clouds and off again/on again rain as we motored to Panama.  Althoughwith all the rain Alex was able to top off his fresh water tank.  Rain water reallytastes great.  Reminded me back of my childhood days when I use to play in the rain, and catch the raindrops in my mouth.I met some great people (other cruisers) during my week with Alex.  Getting thechance to learn from them of their adventures is knowledge I will cherish. EveryoneI met was friendly, kind, open and warm.  Truly like a great big family.  Awonderful experience!I hope to become part of the cruiser “Family”, although it will be about 4 yearsfrom now.  I am starting to map out my timeline, and then plan on taking action.  Sofor all you cruisers out there know, hope to see you in a few years.  Just look fora “BLANK” boat.  For anyone thinking about becoming a cruiser, you need toexperience it!Thank You Alex for a wonderful week full of fun, adventure, and knowledge.  I willalways remember our time together.Peace, Love & Coconuts!Dan Blank**********I was just looking at my schedule, and I’d like to fit one more in before I head to Ecuador in October. I have time the first week in September, the Last week of September, and the first 2 weeks of October. If anyone is interested let me knowHope everyone is well.Alex

Dan took off this morning.

Click to view full size image

Dan took off this morning he seemed a little bummed which made me happy that he had a good time. We kicked back for most of the trip and only managed to get a picture this morning (I was still asleep) just before he stepped on the shore boat. I wanted to crop myself out as I was only awake a few minutes before we took the picture. I also have a video clip we shot just after the lightning strike; I’ll post that video soon. My next guest (Buddy) is arriving on Saturday in Contadora. He’ll have my new HDV video camera with him. Hopefully we will get some good footage.

Someone sent an Instant message asking what an indirect strike is. An indirect strike hits the water close to the boat (20 – 30 feet) in my case. The electricity penetrates the ships grounding system via an under-water grounding plate and the motor shaft. It also included Namaste in its EMP (Electro magnetic Pulse), I hope all my video tapes are okay. It could have been a lot worse. Two boats took direct strikes here at the Balboa Yacht Club two days before we pulled in. A direct strike could literally wipe me out. All internal wiring, electronics, digital media (hard drives & tapes), not to mention the possibility of loosing the boat. Direct strikes have been known to blow thru-hull fittings right out of the boat.

I was able to get my visa extension on Friday. I have to bring my outboard to the shop on Monday morning. It’s not a big job; they just have to take 2 bolts out that hold the plastic cover on. I couldn’t get them off for the life of me. I’ll do some provisioning and be off by Wednesday or Thursday the latest.  I’m also in the process of trying to open an HSBC bank account. Believe it or not I still haven’t been able to access an ATM, it’s been what, 6 weeks? Thanks Washington Mutual!

Gary & Mavis (on Plan B), Dan and I went to see the new “Pirates of the Caribbean” yesterday. I was a little disappointed. They (Hollywood) did the same thing they did to “The Matrix”. They shot 2 sequels at once, neither of which is a movie that has a beginning, middle, and end. It was entertaining, but I’m not so interested in seeing the 3rd now.

Oh well, I hope everyone is well and enjoying their weekend.

Peace, Love & Coconuts!

Alex

Back in the City

Dan and I motored from Isla Contadora yesterday.

The day before it rained, torrentially, and it rained for most of our trip to Panama.

Last night we went to TGIF’s for dinner and had a few beers at the Balboa Yacht club.

The lightning strike did a little more damage then I thought. There is an electric ghost in my system. My refrigeration died, along with my digital sea temperature indicator and one of my lights turns off at will, ARRRGGGG!!!! Life could be worse though. Two boats took direct hits here in the yacht club 2 days ago.

Dan’s off in the morning, and I’m hoping to be back in Contadora by Wednesday.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Alex

All is well

Dan’s a great easy going guy to be around. We’ve been spear fishing every day, eating fish, and talking, been having a few drinks too. It’s nice to have company for a change. For 3 days my SSB didn’t work after the lightning strike, believe it or not it’s come back to life. I think the EMP charged the SSB, or the grounding plane, who knows. It did nothing but read a full screen of backward 6’s for thee days.

Dan thought he was bad luck as I had my lightning strike the first day he was here, but feels a lot better now that it’s working. He says he is happy I didn’t kick him overboard, or leave him on a deserted island. Dan also says he is enjoying catching and eating fish as well as kicking back and reading amongst this beautiful setting.

We are off to Contadora in the morning, then to Panama on Thursday.

Hope everyone is well.

Peace, Love and Coconuts.

Alex

Well talk about squalls.

Dan showed up on the one thirty flight from Panama. We immediately took off for Isla Ampon. 3 Whale Sharks approached Namaste (ten yards away), and 4 whales were a few hundred yards off playing and breaching. All was good, we dropped the hook in Isla Ampon around three thirty.

Almost immediately a major squall hit us at anchor (around 60 knots), and it finally happened. Namaste took an indirect lightning strike. The Single side band radio is defiantly gone, and I will check everything else out tomorrow. Dan had a great time swimming in the lightning. We are going to get drunk and have dinner on Plan B, I hope the damage is not that bad,

^%$$#@@((!&@^!@*( DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!) I guess Life goes on, beats the hell out of traffic.

Peace, Love, and Lightning!!!!!!!!!

Dan sez hi to everyone.

Alex & Dan

No sleep

Isla Contadora is a crappy anchorage to say the least. Every night has been rollie, and I´m going to bolt back for Ampon today. Dan is comming on the one thirty flight, then we are off like a shot.

I finished all the Mahi Mahi, but shot a good size snapper and grouper this morning. The boat is stocked with food and drinks for a week.

I´ll post logs as much as I can, but it´s hard sometimes having someone aboard. I´ll ask Dan to write a log from his perspective.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts everyone.

Laundry day

Well I’ve been steadily working on the boat for the last few days. When I ran aground in Isla Linton, 10 or so months ago, the sand took off all of the bottom paint under the keel and the barnacles just grew, Grew, GREW! Yesterday I spend 4 hours snorkeling, scraping barnacles (really tore up my hands). The hull was in pretty good shape, but I had an extra 3 inches at the bottom of the keel. A big sea turtle was very interested in my hammering, and scraping underwater, he hung around for an hour or so, and got within 5, or 6 feet.

A bunch of the survivor kids got drunk the other night and let all the animals out of the hotels zoo. One big bird (Toucan I think) died, and there is still a big cat on the loose. All the monkeys were recovered, but what a nightmare for the hotel, they got in a lot of trouble.

My guest (Dan) is showing up in the morning, and I’ll be really happy to get out of Isla Contadora. The anchorage here really bites. The holding is no good and it’s exposed to the North. There is also a strapping current that runs down the shore. Namaste lays to current with her full keel and the wind almost always seems to be on the beam, creating a very uncomfortable roll. I decided to tie up to a mooring this time, what a mistake. The tire (Mooring ball) was covered in barnacles. And the other night when the wind was opposing the current (as usual) it was rubbing the aft, port side of the hull. It really did some damage to the gel-coat, lots of deep gouges. I know it’s just cosmetic, but you know, Namaste’s my baby.

I have to do some laundry (sheets) today, then I’ll do some more provisioning. As soon as my time with Dan is over I must go back to Panama City for a few days to renew my visa, ARRGGGGG!

Hope everyone is well.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

I caught a Mahi Mahi today!

Click to view full size image

I left Isla Ampon around 10 am for Contadora. I was trolling with a small squid lure. At first I caught a beautiful friggite bird, he got caught in my line. I reeled him aboard and he was very nice about letting me free his wing. He hung around for a few 20 minutes or so and flew off, I was happy to see he was okay. I put the lure back in the water and caught a beautiful Mahi-Mahi shortly after.

I’m by the pool at a really nice hotel. The Survivor crew was nice enough to give me access to their wireless internet so I can upload some pictures (Mahi-Mahi & Pepe the Pelican)

I love my life!

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love and Mahi-Mahi

I caught 8 fish today!

Don took off to another anchorage today. Before he left he gave me a baggie full of fresh scallops, and a really small jig. He said I should fish for the small Jacks that swim around the boat all day, I never thought of eating them. They look like mini tunas, and are under a foot long.

First off I want to say that the local scallops beat the hell out of any shellfish I’ve ever had. I had a few as sashimi, and I fried up the rest with garlic and olive oil for lunch, WOW, really good, and incredibly sweet!

Then I attached the small (tiny) jig to my spinning rod, and caught my first Jack in less than 60 seconds. Within 45 minutes I caught 8 of them. I ate them with Gary and Mavis on plan B for dinner. They were really good, I’m sure I will eat many in the future.

I started the refrigerator today in preparation for my upcoming guest. I haven’t had it on because I’ve been working on the computer (editing video) so much, and have wanted to save the energy. I’m going to try and stock pile a fair ration of fresh fish, and I think cold beer is a must.

I may take off in the morning, or the following morning, I haven’t really made up my mind yet.

I haven’t heard the news for a while but I hope all is well in the world, I’m guessing its not.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, love, and fresh fish!

Alex

All is right in the world.

Man did it rain last night, torrential downpour. My water tanks are full, I did laundry and took a bath in the fresh water from the dingy, it was almost full. Laundry is hanging all over the boat.

I’ve been on a movie watching binge. A friend showed up in the anchorage, and we swapped DVD books for a few days. Has anything good come out in the last year or so?

I’m just going 2 B relaxing 4 a few days. I’m heading to Contadora day after tomorrow.

Cheers.

Peace, love, and new movies 2 watch.

Alex

I?m in love!

Ha, fool’d Ya!

I’m in love with my life. Today is my first day being 41, and I love it!

I had a brilliant birthday party on “Contigo” last night. Maggie made a wonderful Trigger-fish dinner, and I had a coconut birthday cake. I also got a nice bottle of rum, and some new books as birthday gifts : ) I took pictures and will upload some as soon as I get some bandwidth. Birthday greetings came in all day on my Sat-phone (Thanks Everyone), and it was just a fantastic day. I’m counting my blessings.

We listened to good music and chatted the night away. I really am in love with my life! I have friends all over the world, I have a righteous little sailboat, health, and freedom. What more could a man ask for? I know…, love of a woman right, perhaps some day? For now, I’m pretty damn happy!

My new little 2hp Yamaha outboard quit. It’s a funny little outboard. The top just doesn’t just pop-off. Ten screws hold it in place and I couldn’t get 2 of the screws out. It’s still under warrantee as it is not even 5 months old. I believe the stainless screws have corroded to the aluminum threading. I’ll bring it to Yamaha when I get back to Panama. I was able to bend the plastic far enough back to empty the bowl (Carburetor), and clean the contacts on the plug, it fired right up! I also had to patch up the dingy as it had a pretty bad leak. I’ll be able to put the dink in the water in the morning and go fishing.

I’m excited for my first charter to visit (22nd). It will be nice to have company on board for a while. I’m not really looking for any more charters until next March. In March I should be in Ecuador, or Peru, and I’ll be looking for one charter to sail from South America with me to the Galapagos (About 2 weeks). If anyone is interested speak up early as I’ll only be taking one person.

Oh yeah, the pelican (Pepe) came back. I was watching a movie night before last, and noticed that my pelican was perched on my hatch to the v-birth. I smiled as I like his company. Then it hit me, he’s pooping in my V-birth, ARRRRRGGGGGG! I went up on deck, picked him up while he was sleeping, and put him in the water. He looked at me like I had 2 heads, “What the hell did you do that for”? I didn’t know how to explain it to him; he obviously thought it was a breech of our friendship as he has not returned. He left a nice memento on my sheets though.

I’m going to head over to Contadora Tuesday or Wednesday and get ready for my guest.

I hope everyone is well.

Peace, Love, and Life!

Alex

Forty-one!

Tomorrow is my birthday, I’m 41, and I’m feeling a bit reflective today.

As far as the cruising community goes I’m young, thank God I figured it out early.

Looking at my pictures over the past 4 years I haven’t seemed to have aged much; actually I think I look a bit younger & healthier. Namaste is my magic carpet, my fountain of youth, a black hole in actuality. A magical sailboat that grants me immortality as she sails through what everyone else calls reality, I am Peter Pan : )

I’m getting a birthday party this year. Chris & Maggie are throwing me a party on Contigo and I’m actually getting a cake. Gary, Mavis, and Don will be attending as well, kinda’ cool! A birthday in paradise with friends, I couldn’t ask for much more.

My mother passed away at 42 and I’ve never thought I’d make it that far, perhaps I will? I believe peace and tranquility are the keys to a happy and long life. Sometimes I have to work on the tranquil part, but I know I’m supposed to be where I am, doing what I’m doing.

I want to thank all of you. If it wasn’t for people I’ve never met buying my DVD’s, chartering and donating, I’d never be able to pull this off. I’m a very lucky man, and I know it!

I just found out someone very close to me is in the hospital having a nervous break down. I’ve tried to help for years and I’ve seen it coming like a Mack-truck. I’ve been there…, at the very bottom of my life. For years I felt myself sinking farther away from joy. One day my toes touched the cold stones at the bottom of river torment. I found the strength to swim for the surface, barley, but I found it! I hope my friend finds his way. The truth is no one could help me find my way but me. I remember searching through my palm-pilot looking for a guide, help, nobody! I believe our paths are our own, and we must walk them no matter how jagged. Support from friends and family is important, but in the end we must take responsibility for our own actions. I know I haven’t figured it all out, but at 41, I think I have a good idea.

Thanks everybody.

Peace, Love, and Friendship.

– Alex

Not 2 much 2 report.

After dinner on “Plan B” last night I came home and watched Vertical Limit. It was a rollie night and I didn’t sleep well, nightmares too. I hate that. I’ve been a little off all day.

Today I cleaned the cockpit and listened to all my U2 CDs, then went spear fishing (saw a nurse shark). I shot a grouper which I just had for dinner, and a trigger that I gave to Gary and Mavis. They cooked all their fish last night.

I swapped DVD books with Chris and I’m going to look for a movie to watch tonight and hopefully get a good nights sleep.

I’m kind of in a Blah mood.

I hope everyone is having a gr8 week.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

– Alex

Just do it!

My friends Gary & Mavis on “Plan B” showed up this morning. They invited everyone in the anchorage to a coconut rice & Dorado dinner. That includes me, Chris & Maggie on “Contigo”, and Don on “Tamue”.

Don’s a cool guy. Don’s famous in these parts because he does the weather forecast (7 days a week) on the Panama Pacific net (81430 USB 14:00 Zulu). Everyone from Mexico to Peru depends on his words. It’s good to be buddies with the weather man, plus he’s a great guy.

Another BlueSphere subscriber is getting ready to go Cruising. Terry from Toronto is looking at a WestSail 32 “Great Choice” and has asked what I think is needed for serious world cruising. I don’t know that I’m any kind of authority, but here is my opinion of what’s necessary, and in order of importance.

1. A bullet-proof attitude. 2. Common sense. 3. A sound hull & rig. 4. A good sail inventory. 5. Top of the line ground tackle, with multiple options (All Chain). 6. A good windless that can be operated manually (I don’t have one at all). 7. A reliable motor (with a clean fuel system).

Obviously you’ll need means of navigation (GPS or Sextant), and I’d say the only other necessary electronics would be a depth sounder. An autopilot is really nice (I wouldn’t cruise without one), and I wish I had a wind-vane, but I will not get into that.

I’m about to start selling Roger Olson’s book “Plot your course to adventure” which answers all of these kinds of questions. It will be available on the site shortly. I believe Roger’s book to be a “Must have” for any cruisers library.

The only other thing I’d like to mention is that going cruising has been the most rewarding experience of my life.

The following words belong to Sterling Hayden, taken from his book “Wanderer” :

To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest. Otherwise you are doomed to a routine traverse, the kind known to yachtsmen, who play with their boats at sea – “cruising,” it is called. Voyaging belongs to seamen, and to the wanderers of the world who cannot, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and you have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change. Only then will you know what the sea is all about.

“I’ve always wanted to sail to the South Seas, but I can’t afford it.” What these men can’t afford is not to go. They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of “security.” And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine – and before we know it our lives are gone.

What does a man need – really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in – and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That’s all – in the material sense. And we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention from the sheer idiocy of the charade.

The years thunder by. The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it the tomb is sealed.

Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?

– Sterling Hayden

This section of text rings particularly true to me. When I left on my voyage I had no money, I still have no money, and I aspire to have no money. “Ask not how much you can acquire, but how little you need”. Life is far more rewarding that way.

When I die the last thing I want to leave behind is money. In my last moments I will roar with laughter knowing that I dared to live my dreams, and I will die with a smile on my face : )

I’ve forgotten the most important component of all, will, you must have will!

Speaking of which, I got another charter today. Kirk is coming the second week of September. He’s interested in voyaging. I’m hoping to unlock another soul.

Peace, Love, and (I think Nike said it best), JUST DO IT!

Pelican Poop!

Today I woke up around 4am and popped my head out of the hatch and saw the southern-cross as usual; I often look for it. I could see some lightning to the east.

I don’t know why, but I just woke up in a really good mood today. I cut up a potato and made some home fries & eggs for breakfast. I also had my usual green tea with ginseng. It must be 2, or 3 months now that I quit caffeine, and I’m really happy about it. I know green tea has a little caffeine, but nothing like the triple espressos I used to make 3 times a day.

I had breakfast in the cockpit and watched the light show, I noted it was coming this way and decided to wash the decks if it brought a good amount of fresh water with it. By 8:30 it was pouring and the wind was blowing 35. I was on the deck with a brush and bottle of joy, scrubbing. I heard someone in the distance “DO YOU NEED HELP”? I could Chris popping his head from under his awning. I held up my brush and replied “NO I’M CLEANING THE DECKS”! There was a fair amount of lightning around; I think Chris & Maggie thought I was off my rocker. The rain felt like needles, but Namaste’s decks are nice and clean.

I little later a hungry pelican came to visit. He was kind of dragging one wing, and I think he wasn’t doing so well. I tried to feed him a can of tuna with no luck. He liked the attention and human contact. I pet, and scratched his head; he stayed for an hour or so. A little while later I got a call from Chris on the radio. “There’s a pelican in my cockpit”! He climbed on Contigo. I went over and shot some video and we fed him a can of tuna, it was easier when he let us hold his moth open, he ate it willingly. I think it was just weird for him because it wasn’t a whole fish (weird texture), but he liked it. It seemed to go right through him as he left a nice surprise behind.

Chris just drove by and Pepe (The Pelican) on the bow of his dingy. Chris pushed him off into the water, but he flew back over to Contigo and got in the cockpit again. Maggie doesn’t want pelican poop everywhere but Pepe is pretty darn determine to live on Contigo. It’s funny!

I’m going over to Contigo later for “Movie Night”, I wonder if Pepe will like “Madagascar”.

Peace, Love, & Pelican Poop!

I love 2 read!

I finished “Basket Case” today and liked it. I have to be careful about getting into a reading mode because the weeks will fly away and I’ll accomplish nothing, not even spear fishing.

I did fix a shelf and scrub the waterline today. If I can knock out 1, or 2 productive jobs a day I’m happy. For the most part I kicked back in the cockpit reading.

I kind of feel like I never really woke up today it has been so slow. My friends on “Contigo” went to Contodora to go shopping. Everything is flown in on Friday “fresh fruits and Veggies”, Chris took my grocery list (Pineapples, carrots, potatoes, cucumbers).

My only plans at this point are to get the boat clean for my guest coming on the 22nd, and…., uhhhhhh……, hummmmm?????….Read and spear fish! I’m working on my next DVD too, I want to release it by the holidays.

Latitudes and attitudes picked up my 6th article which means I need to get working on number 7 “Viva Las Pearlas”. I hope all my readers subscribe to the magazine. Not just to read my stuff, but if you are into the cruising concept, it’s a must read.

Oh, yeah….. What a light show last night! It never rained that hard but just a few miles to the west was lots and lots of convection. I got some video.

Uh oh, I just spotted another book on my night table. “Deep as the Marrow” by F. Paul Wilson. Should I or shouldn’t I?

Where are my reading glasses?

Peace, love, and slow days.

Another day in the life!

08 30.522 N 079 01.315W

I got some upsetting news yesterday and I had a tuff time sleeping, I didn’t get up till 930. The day turned out pretty well though. Chris came by and we went spear fishing. I spotted two decent size snappers (about 4 to 5 lbs) in a cut in the reef and shot one for lunch. Chris shot a healthy 20lb snapper that could have eaten mine as bait. He can also hold his breath for 2 to 3 minutes; I am just a meager grasshopper.

When I got back to Namaste I started cleaning the waterline, and put my fish on the BBQ, it was a good lunch. Maggie (Chris’s wife) gave me some books yesterday and I started reading Basket Case today.

I love it when the days are simple.

The sky is full of lightning, I’m sure a heavy rain is approaching.

Peace, Love and Coconuts.

Good news!

I ran the motor for 10 hours under load and no problem, even when it got pretty choppy. Maybe I finally have this damn thing licked.

I got up and left the Balboa Yacht Club at 5:30 this morning. I didn’t sleep well last night and really wasn’t in the mood to do anything, but I forced myself out of bed. After getting out of the entrance to the canal and navigating all of the freighters, tankers, & car carriers in the “Big Ship” anchorage I decided to shut my eyes for a few minutes.

Man did the wind pick up fast. When I opened my eyes it was raining in sheets and the wind kicked up to 30 knots, I did a quick 2 reef fire drill. Truthfully it felt good to be at sea again. The pacific is gentile (Most of the time) compared to the Caribbean, and I like a little excitement.

I’m back on the north side of Isla Contodora, it feels good to be in the islands again. It’s time to relax for a while. It’s a good feeling knowing my motor will never break-down again, NEVER : )

I posted a new video “Bad fuel” in the BlueSphere TV section of the site, or you can click on a link in yesterday’s log.

Tomorrow I’m going to do some shopping (food) here in Contodora, then probably head for Isla Ampon. I have some stuff for Chris & Maggie on “Contigo”, and I’m hoping to go spear fishing before the day is done.

I’m really looking forward for my charter (Dan) to visit, I hope he has a good time. All my past charters have been quite successful and I had a great time as well.

I know I’m behind on replying to a lot of emails, I’ll do that in the next few days.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Sunshine!

Happy 4th of July everyone.

Wake me up when July is over; in just another 10 days I’ll be 41. Man these birthdays just keep coming, one after the other, year after year, AHHHHHHH!

I decided to spend one more day in Panama to celebrate the 4th of July here at the Yacht Club. They’re doing food, fire works, & cheep happy hour drinks.

I’m happy to be an American today. I’m happy I have the freedom to do what I do. I know if I was borne in most other parts of the world my life would be very different. Lets all remember what it really means to be an American. I feel we are slowly loosing our freedom to security & fear, let’s make sure that doesn’t happen.

I’ve uploaded another video clip (Bad Fuel) in the “BlueSphere TV” section of the website. You’ll see how nasty the inside of my tank was. Now that I have my new computer I’ll be uploading more pictures & videos.

Have a cold one for me in the states.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, & Freedom!!!!

Life is getting out of hand.

In the past 3 week my bank (Washington Mutual) canceled my debit card (due to them changing from a visa to master card logo) and really threw a wrench in my life. My domain name didn’t get paid for, I don’t have access to the very little money that I have, and PayPal has decided to become “not Panama friendly” is how the supervisor put it.

Today I finally got my fedex but couldn’t activate my card because I need to activate it from my home phone. After a good deal of griping, I got it activated. But it is absolutely impossible for them to give me a pin number. I spoke to the supervisor, and even the “super-supervisor”. They asked every security question they could think of, and after answering them all, still no pin number “Sorry sir, it’s for your own protection”!

This is getting somewhat comical I thought.

Hummmmm, how to live without access to an ATM?

Paypal has put in new security measures to protect me from my own money. If your not in a “PayPal friendly country, no more international access, “you have to be kidding me”!

“Sorry sir, it’s for your own protection”!

I can’t tell you how frustrated I am. Why are we set up not to help people who travel?

I tell you, one day I’m going to disappear in the jungle, and that will be it! I’ll build a “Tarzan” tree house, get a pet monkey, and maybe find a “Jane”.

Aren’t we supposed to be celebrating freedom & independence on the 4th of July?

I can’t take it; I’m out of here in the morning. I can buy some groceries in Contodora when my friends show up on my debit card, but I will not have much cash for small items. I think I’m going to have to change my address to my friend’s house, cancel this card, and order another one, ARRRRGGGGGGGGGGG. Why can’t they just give me the damn pin number? Do you know I spent over $100.00 on my cell phone with my bank last week. It took the banker 20 minutes to take down my address here at the Yacht Club. Her computer wasn’t set up to accept 4 lines of address. I asked her “Can’t you just write it down on a piece of paper and deal with it after we hang up”? “Sorry it doesn’t work that way sir” “I know, I know, it’s for my own protection right”? “Yes sir”

Is it me or has the world gone mad?

I guess I just needed to vent in my log today, sorry, I just can’t believe that life in the system has become so….. dense!

Peace, Love, and “Lets all find a better way”!

Nasty, Nasty, Nasty!!!!

I don’t like to admit that I actually have a bilge, but I do. With all the work I’ve been doing on my motor a bit of diesel and oil has found its way to the very darkest of places on Namaste. The sludge is absolutely fowl & nasty, nasty, NASTY!!!

My automatic bilge switch went a few months ago and I’ve just now replaced it.

I know why Henry committed suicide, I’m sure he spent a fair amount of time down in the bilge; I’d drown myself if I had to live in such a place, YUCK!!!!

I’ve decided against the flat paint I’m painting in the head. I’m going to go with a slightly darker semi-gloss. The lighter color makes the head seem twice the size, well maybe not, but bigger.

My buddy Gary on “Plan B” is back in Panama, I’m heading over for some fresh fish for dinner.

Anyway, I’m off to take a well needed shower, and clean up the boat.

Hopefully my package will be here tomorrow.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love & Coconuts.

Well, what do you know, no FedX today, guess I’m leaving on Tuesday morning, I hope!

I don’t know how often Google Earth updates its satellite photos, but that may be me in the yellow star, at the very least that’s the mooring I’m on.

I got bored and started painting in the head today. I’m only painting over the marine-ply and leaving the solid teak trim. I’m using a soft, flat, white enamel, it looks nice.

I didn’t win my bid on my camera last night; I waited a few seconds too long and missed it, oh well, everything happens for a reason right?

I can’t wait to shoot a fish; I’m really craving some sashimi. I just put on some Inaka Soba noodles which I’ll have with a box of tofu for dinner. Probably doesn’t sound all that good, but I use a lot of wasabe, and add seaweed, sesame seeds, and sprouts, Yummy! Which reminds me, I’d really be bummed if I didn’t visit the Japanese market before I take off. I have almost 3 weeks before my charter (Dan) shows up; I need to do some stocking up. I have so much food on the boat though, I hate buying more. I should be able to live on what I have for 4-5 months. I just cant put another can of tuna in my mouth.

I spoke to my buddy Chris on the SSB, he’s going to help me put on my 3-blade prop, out in the islands.

If anyone’s interested in visiting let me know.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

I got the Panama blues!

Well my plan is to split for Isla Contodora on Sunday. I’m supposed to get my Fedx tomorrow, and if that’s the case, I’m off like a prom dress.

I grabbed this satellite image of Isla Contodora from Google earth, pretty cool eah?

I feel like I get weak when I’m in a port like this (big city). I eat worse, exercise less, and don’t enjoy my days the way I’ve become accustomed too in the islands. It’s like peace doesn’t exist here. Everyone is looking to make a buck, cars & people move too fast, and life just feels “Thin”. Not to mention the fact I can’t afford it.

I’ve started editing my next DVD which is really putting a big smile on my face. I really enjoy going through my old footage and documenting my story. My new Laptop (Dell Inspiron E1505) is awesome. I even digitized some HDV footage that I shot in the San Blas and the image quality is amazing. I’m bidding on a new HDV camera (Sony HDR-HC1) tonight on ebay. It’s pretty much the last of my money, but what the hell, this is what I’m doing, and I really want to do it in High Definition.

My friend Aki has returned to Panama. I thought he was going to Ecuador but life got in the way. He found out his best friend has terminal cancer and flew back to Japan yesterday. He is hoping to talk him out of the hospital, and asking that he and his wife spend the summer in the Las Pearlas on his sailboat “Liberty”. Life is such a delicate thing it amazes me that so many of us sell it for so little.

I hope everyone is well and happy.

It’s good to be back online.

Peace, Love, and Liberty.

Alex

Henry is dead!

So how has life without Project BlueSphere been? Someone forgot to pay for the domain name; I wonder who that could be? I take no responsibility, because I’m responsibility-phobic : )

Namaste is a mess. I’ve opened the fuel tank and cleaned it out. I spent the day covered in diesel. I need to go and pick up some rubber gasket material for the inspection plates on the fuel tank, I’ll get that knocked out tomorrow (Monday), along with paying for the domain name. I’ll fill her up with clean fuel, bleed the motor, and hopefully this will be the end of my motor problems for the rest of my life!

I don’t know if you guys remember my X-girlfriend Lupe, but I have a funny story. When she moved in I saw a gargantuan cockroach scramble out of her bag and dart out of sight before I could wheel a deadly blow. I wasn’t too happy about him, but we named him Henry hoping that he was not a female carrying eggs. I laid down some roach poison and didn’t see him for weeks (Thought I got him). The next time we came across each other I threw a book at him but he availed me once again. A few months later I caught a glimpse of him as he darted into the headliner in the head. I sprayed a half can of roach spray in the hole he entered and hoped that was the end of it. In the past year I’ve seen him a half a dozen times, but I’ve never managed to kill him. Today he stole my glory by committing suicide. I found him floating in the head…, dead! He’s fish food now, YEEEHAAAAA!!!!

I’ve finished the fuel tank, and fixed my fresh water system. I decided not to do a bottom job because I’ve been hemorrhageing money ever since I got here fixing things. I went to pay my bill at the yacht club yesterday, and my card was declined. I have money in my account, and my card doesn’t expire until December, wasssss up?

Well it seems Washington Mutual has decided to change the Visa logo on the card to MasterCard, what a “cluster!%$@”, after a lot of screaming they agreed to FedEx me a new card. They are really not set up for international customers, ARGGG!!!

It’s been weird for me with out projectbluesphere.com for the last week.

Anyway, sorry about the lapse in the website.

I hope everyone is well and happy.

I posted some pictures in the last log.

Peace, Love, and DEAD HENRY’S!

Well Sara went home this morning. We had a great time in the Las Pearlas as well as here in Panama city.

It’s time for me to focus on Namaste now. I’m going to clean the fuel tank, fix, or replace the fresh water pump, change all the filters, haul her out, paint the bottom, and change the prop to a 3-blade. The currents are much more powerful here, and I think the prop will really help out (under power).

I really want to get out of here and back to my spear fishing life-style. I’m also going to the Sony center here to digitize some HDV video footage I shot. If I can edit the HDV footage easily on my new Laptop, I’m going to order a Sony HDR-HC1 high Definition video camera. The video quality is amazing, and I’d really like to incorporate it into my next DVD.

I’ll be updating the logs more regularly now.

Peace, Love & Coconuts

Drinking

Not only is my fuel tank dirty, my bottom in need of paint, but now I have a hang-over, ARRRGGGGG!!!!

Sara and I went out to a casino last night, she left $125.00 up, and I quit after loosing 30, but we had fun and the drinks were free.

She is flying out on Thursday morning. After that I need to open my fuel tank and clean out the crud, paint the bottom, fix or replace my water pump, and finish a few other projects. I feel like i am allways working on the boat!!!! Oh, and I need to put on a new prop, 3 blades.

Bda bda bda, thats all folks.

Peace, love, and NO MORE DRINKING!!!!!!

Alex

I know the motor problem!!!

IT´S IN THE FUEL SYSTEM!!!!!

I motored for 10 hrs today (Glass seas) with out a problem. I got waked by a super-tanker entering the canal and after shaking Namaste up well the motor started to die. The problem is definatly in the fuel system!I´m going to change all the fuel hoses, change all the filters (again), and have the fuel polished.

Sis and I got back around 4pm and headed to TGIF´S for a ¨real¨ meal. I think she was over the fresh fish thing.

I´m really tired, but she wants to go out. I´m going to take a nap and find a place to go out tonight. Sara has been dying for AC and a real shower. She´s going to move into a hotel tomorrow. Over the next few days we will do some shopping, go to the movies, and I´m going to show her the Panama Canal. We will also do a jungle walk and look for wild-life.

I´ll have some pictures up tomorrow.

Cheers everyone.

Alex

The Big Smoke

I´m going back to ¨the big smoke¨(city) in the morning, I really don´t want too but Sis needs some more excitment then spear fishing, and wants to do some shopping.

I may do a bottom job at the Balboa Yacht Club, but more likely I´ll rush back and continue fishing in Paradise.

I´ll upload a few pictures the day after tomorrow when I get some bandwidth.´

It´s hot, HOT, today, and we spent most of the day in the water. I´m finding all the cool spots for my guests this summer.

I shot a HUGE trigger today, but he slipped away at the last moment, I hate that, such a waste.

Peace, Love, & Coconuts.

Alex

Back in Contodora

I shot the nicest snapper of my time as the ¨great white hunter¨the other day, we had him for Sushi with my friends on Contigo the oter day. Today I shot a nice, fat, Trigger.

I´ll be heading back to Panama with Sis in a few days, She wants do do some shopping & stuff. I need to fix a few things and prepair for my charter at the end of July.

All is well, I hope my 2 charters are ready to eat fresh fish and live the ¨Island life¨for a week. I can see in my Sister she´s just starting to slow down and get used to it.

My cell works here if anyone needs to call 507.6665.4159

Cheers everyone.

Alex

fishing

The last few days my email system has been down.

I hope the problem is fixed and I will be able to continue daily logs, I think I got it whipped.

The instant message is working; I just haven’t been able to send anything out.

We moved the boat to Isla Ampon, it’s really beautiful here, and quite protected. The lagoon is “Lake” flat, and different species of birds are everywhere, the water isn’t that clear though.

I know Sara wants to call her boy friend, and I want to do some spear fishing, we will probably head back to Contodora, for restaurants, internet, and phones today or tomorrow.

Hope everyone is well.

Peace, Love, & coconuts.

Alex

hang’n out

New Location:

08 30.513 N 079 01.673 W

My Sister got in on friday with no problems. It’s funny how much she still looks like the last time I saw her when she was around 11.

We took off to Isla Ampon and met up with my friends on “Contigo”. Whe had drinks with them last night, came back to the boat and watched “Sin City” on my super cool new laptop. It has 2 power buttons, one for booting into windows, and one for booting into Media Direct. The computer only draws about 2 amps to watch a movie in the “media direct mode”, how cool is that?

Well my buddy Rodger called me yesterday and let me know that my Saki recipe was a success even amongst his Japanese friends. They said it wasn’t the best Saki they’ve had, but “firmly drinkable”.

When I get back to Panama I have to look for “wine making supplies” on the internet. I hear one can buy something to put in the wine to stop the fermentation process, and something else one can put in the wine to make the sediment fall to the bottom. I also want a device to measure the alcohol content. If I can figure this one out, I’ll be style’n.

It’s a laid back rainy day. Sara’s reading “The Count of Monte Cristo”, and I’m going to start John Grisham’s “The Broker”. We are going over to Contigo later for movie night. I’m bringing my new laptop (Hal), and some popcorn. Another friend (Dog on Tomery) is coming by, and we’ll all vote on what to watch tonight.

I hope Sara doesn’t get too bored over the next few weeks. My life is much slower then what she’s used too, and I can tell she already misses her man, amore! Well sail for Panama city in a week or so I know she’ll want to do some shopping, and well go out to a movie, and a few of the local bars. For now it’s laid back reading and movie time. This is really a nice and protected anchorage, as soon as we get some sun, we’ll go exploring in the dingy.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Peace, love & family.

Sunshine!!!

I heard an interesting line in a song, it’s had me preoccupied:

“Sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell”

Is that really true? I think I’m a goat!

Another line in the same song:

“As soon as you’re borne you start dying, so you might as well have a good time”

I think the band is “Cake”, I can’t figure it out from my MP3 list.

I know, I know, you think I have too much time on my hands. It’s nice to spend countless hours thinking about nothing and everything. It’s nice to actually listen to the lyrics in songs as opposed to letting them fill in the background noise in your head while one really think about something else like bills, dinner, which way to turn, or something important like that.

The rain has subsided, and it is a beautiful day for a change. I scrubbed the waterline of the hull this morning, and I’m doing some last minute cleaning. My Sister arrives in the morning.

I must have been sleeping quite soundly last night because when I woke up, the hatch was open and it was pouring rain on me. How long did I sleep through that, it must have been a few minutes because I was drenched? I remember dreaming that I was in the rain, so perhaps it didn’t seem important too wake up.

The boat is clean and smells nicer (Like Bleach), as opposed to a more normal boat smell. I also dumped a quart of bilge cleaner in a few days ago to freshen it up. Not that my boat is usually dirty, it just smells like a boat.

I’m going shopping in a few minutes to pick up extra food & stuff, I’m also going to pick up some things (fresh veggies & fruit) for my friends on “Contigo” (Happy birthday Maggy). We will meet them tomorrow night at Isla Ampon, probably for dinner and “Sun Downers” (Boat drinks).

Peace, Love, and Sunshine!

What a gr8 day yesterday!

That lightning that was coming was a long line of squalls. It rained all through the night and till about 15:00 the next day. I drank lots of tea, and started John Grisham’s “The Street Lawyer” yesterday morning, almost finished it, I’ll have it wrapped up by mid day.

I few days ago I went looking for a place to do laundry, no avail. I started talking to one of the women who works at one of the big hotels here, and she’s going to bring it home with her tonight (She Lives on the next island), and have it for me in the morning. The workers do not live on Contodora. I’m giving my sister the V-Birth, and want clean sheets & towels; this will work out well for my charters as well. When she first started talking to me she was going to do my laundry as a favor (That’s how people are here). I told her I’d give her ten bucks for 2 loads (Heaps of money for her), she was quite pleased.

Today is 6/6/06 and perhaps the end of the world (someone told me in an email), so I’m going to spend a pleasant day drinking tea, reading, and cleaning the boat. Believe it or not, I’m kind of sick of fishing for the moment. Not that I don’t want to eat it, but I don’t feel like hunting & cleaning (lots of work) today. I also have a bit of an ear ache, and want to stay out of the water for a few days.

As soon as my sister gets in on the morning of the 9th, we’ll probably immediately set sail for Isla Espirito Santo (15 miles away). The anchorage is well protected, and it can be a bit rollie here. There is also a fresh water stream, and it’s supposed to be the nicest anchorage in the Las Pearlas.

Have a gr8 day everyone.

Peace, Love & Coconuts.

Introspective

If you’ve been reading my logs long enough you’ll know I get like this every once and a while. I’m sitting on the bow with my back propped up against my drifter (Large sail in a bag), the sky is full of stars, and I can see flashes of lightning just a few miles away (Coming my way).

Why am I here? Why am I anchored off the island of Contodora, I should be sailing across the Pacific right now. Project BlueSphere is about a guy sailing around the world, it’s not supposed to be about a guy spear fishing & making Sushi for lunch. Hell, for that matter what am I doing on this boat, why aren’t I plugged back into the system getting ready to go back to work in the morning?

Perhaps it presumptuous of me; but I usually conceder myself the one who’s figured it all out, but maybe I haven’t? Maybe I’m just really lost? I know I’ve found freedom, and I know I’m happier then when I was trying to forge a life out of stone back in Hollywood. I’m really relieved I don’t have to worry about bills any more, and I don’t mind having few material objects. But why am I here (contemplating my navel)?

I guess I’m just curious. I feel like I’m back on the right track, but where is tomorrow going?

Crossing the Pacific wasn’t for me this season, God only knows I tried hard enough, but it just didn’t happen.

My past charters have become very good friends of mine and I keep up with them regularly, and I’m excited about sharing what I’ve found with the people who will be joining me onboard Namaste this summer. I’m also very excited about being reunited with my Sister (on my Dad’s side) after so many years. That in itself is worth not crossing the Pacific this year. Or perhaps I’m to help the Kuna? By the way, I found a blurb about the oil thing:

http://www.rigzone.com/news/article.asp?a?id=25530

I feel like I’ve let go again and it feels great! If you’re a “Fight Club” fan you’ll know the scene where Tyler Derden lets go of the steering wheel to see what happens (They crash of course), but it makes total sense to me. Let go, JUST LET GO!!!!!! Tomorrow will still come. Why don’t more of us live our dreams? Why do we feel the need to work our lives away to make money for crap we don’t need? What do we really need, food, water, a place to sleep? I feel like Forrest Gump. I just woke up and started sailing one day.

The thing that scares me is I don’t know that I could ever go back; I don’t even have a driver’s license anymore. I don’t think I could survive back in the system. And doesn’t that sound weird in itself “Back in the system”? When I was in the system I didn’t even know there was a system. It was normal for me to stick a nozzle in my car and pump forty dollars into it after spending a hundred and twenty dollars on dinner, before waking up and going to my eighty dollar a month health club and deciding where to have lunch while walking on a treadmill. THAT SOUNDS SO RDICULIOUS TO ME NOW IT”S NOT EVEN FUNNY!!!!!! If someone put a gun to your head and said “I’m pulling the trigger unless you start living the life you want” What would you do (Also from Fight Club)?

Really, what would you do tomorrow?

Maybe I need to go to sleep, and maybe I have too much time on my hands to think, but maybe we all need to let go and find the path of least resistance, our CHI?

Walk the path of CHI; it’s easy to see if you look for it.

I shot a fat grouper today.

Peace, Love & Chi!

Charter

I was just looking at my schedule and I can squeeze in a charter between July 7th – the 14th (my birthday), if anyone is interested. As I said in an earlier log, I’m booked July 21st – 28th, and August 5th – to the 13th. And my buddy is coming the last week of August, which leaves September & October open before I head to Ecuador, or possibly back to the San Blas.

I was wrong in my earlier log. The first oil rig in the San Blas is already being constructed. I cant think about it, I’m going spear-fishing.

Have a great Sunday.

Alex

Another day

I’ve been trying to post a log with pictures for a few days. That tropical wave knocked out the internet on the island, and I can’t upload pictures.

All has been pretty good. I’m having problems with my fresh water pump, but I think I fixed it.

I bought some sausages yesterday, and fried them for lunch. It’s funny how fast my body gets used to good food, It was yummy, but all that grease didn’t set too well with me. I shot a big trigger today. I had sushi for lunch, and grilled the other filet for dinner. That works much better for me. I could easily spend the rest of my life spear fishing every day like the Kuna Indians, I love it. It really is like hunting and a hard skill to master, I have a long way to go, but I’m surviving. The visibility kind of sucked, and a bull shark came close to check me out. Its funny hoe comfortable I feel with sharks now, they really are quite beautiful.

It’s dead calm. I’m listening to some good ole’ American Rock & Roll on a Panamanian station, and having a rum & tang. The sunset was beautiful.

I’m board, if you have a moment, send me an instant message.

Cheers from the other side of reality.

Alex

Terrible Night!

A tropical wave blasted through last night and my anchor drug, very unusual for me, I got 40 feet from the rocks!

The wind was around 25-30 (not so bad) but the current set Namaste conflicting the wind, and the roll was horrible. I much would rather have been at sea so I could balance the boat into more favorable conditions.

The rain was blinding and I couldn’t see a thing.

Today I’m going to try and take a long nap, and recover from “the night from hell”.

If tonight is uncomfortable, I’ll probably sail for a really nice protected anchorage about 15 miles away tomorrow.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, love & coconuts.

the price of oil?

How can my bread suck so badly now? When I was in the San Blas I was making the best bread known to man, and without an oven on my stove top. Now, what I produce is absolutely un-eatable, even the fish won’t eat it when I throw it overboard. My French friends gave me a recipe around a year ago, I’ve lost it, and I can’t seem to reproduce it. My friends on UTE (Allen & Cora) made, and brought over some great Focaccia a few weeks ago. Cora gave me the recipe and I just gave it my best shot, YUCK!!!!! I have to fix this, it’s imperative to my life-style. My buddy Roger is working on the Saki recipe back in Panama, hopefully we can get this all straitened out.

I finished another article for Latitudes & Attitudes and got that emailed off last night : )

I must master the bread & wine making thing, I MUST!

Anyone out there who has a good stove-top bread recipe, please help! The bread in the stores here is fowl (like wonder bread) but has a stupid looking bear on the front, and it’s called “BIMBO”, how appropriate.

I didn’t go fishing today, basically I hung out on the boat cleaning, baking (HAHA), and listening to music, I’ve been in a weird mood, you’ll find out why in a moment.

If you only like reading my “UP-BEAT” logs, stop here and don’t continue, I mean it!

I got a very disturbing phone call last night.

President Bush and the Panamanian President are trying to strike a deal to do a massive American oil exploration expedition in the San Blas Islands. If this happens, and especially if they find oil, it will wipe the Kuna culture off of the face of the earth PERMINANTLY! The Kuna have a legal right to govern themselves, however the water just off of the barrier reef is Panamanian water, and a prime location for oil rigs. I can’t tell you how desperately sad this makes me. These are the most gentile, and most gracious people I’ve ever had the opportunity of spending time with, and the Kuna-Yalla is by far the most beautiful and special place I’ve ever seen in my life. If you have a moment, go to the photo album section of my site and look into the eyes of these people. They are honest and pure-hearted. American dollars is not what they need, they need to be left alone!!! If the people contemplating this atrocity knew the Kuna people they wouldn’t even think about doing such a thing…, or would they?

The lives we take for oil, it blows my mind.

If it really looks like this deal will take place I’m seriously considering going back to the San Blas and taking a year or two to produce a documentary on the Kuna culture. Maybe at least our grand children could watch the video, and learn of the culture of these beautiful indigenous people.

When I was in Colombia it took me a while to figure out why American Choppers were flying out to the interior early each morning and returning quite late at night. They were spraying the Coca (Cocaine) plants with strong pesticides. I didn’t speak Spanish at the time but asked my friend why an Indian woman was holding 2 dead infants in her arms on the cover of the local news paper. “War on drugs mate” he replied, the chemicals have destroyed the indigenous people’s water supply (Creeks & Rivers), and the children are dying first. These are the things we don’t hear about on CNN, wonder why? This is a good instance of the American dollar reaching deep into the jungle, I can only prey that it stays out of the San Blas.

I live on about 20, 12V amps of power a day. I have 3 solar panels and a wind generator which help provide me the luxury of refrigeration, lights, and power for my computer & cameras. And I use my diesel engine as sparingly as possible.

I can only hope that my readers, subscribers, and audience take care to keep a watchful eye on the energy that they consume. The price for this power is far greater then most of us comprehend.

Anyway, sorry for the downer log, I’m just a bit upset. I make it a point not to get into politics, but this strikes so close to my heart.

It’s raining pretty hard; a tropical wave is passing by. I’m catching water, and the wind generator is working double time. No fish today, so I’m making falafels for din-din.

Peace, Love, and ……….?

Good fishing

I got up pretty early and went spear fishing. I found a nice reef on the Southern end of Contodora where I shot a 2 nice groupers. I BBQ’d one for lunch, and fried the other with garlic & onions for dinner, this fishing thing in the Pacific is really working for me.

When I was exploring the reef today, I saw what I thought was a large grouper in a small hole in the reef. When I got closer I thought it was a moray eel and poked it with the tip of my spear gun. It responded to the touch, but not much. I stuck my whole head in the hole and saw that it was the tip of the tail of a nurse shark (about 5 feet long). Nurse sharks are pretty dossal creatures, and quite beautiful, but will bite when threatened. Stupidly in the past I’ve grabbed their tails and let them take me for a ride, I’ve never been bit though, I don’t bother them any more, I just admire them.

After my Grouper lunch I motored back around to the North side of Contodora thinking that the winds would shift to the South-West and it would make a better anchorage, but they have not shifted I think I’m in for a bumpy night…….

45 minutes later.

Hi again, actually I just got back to the South Side again, it really picked up. I HATE, I HATE, I HATE, having to be a human anchor windless. Do you have any idea how hard it is to pull up 150’ of chain with a 40lb anchor in 25kts of wind, and a 3’ sea bearing down on you. I bought a used manual windlass (sea tiger 555) a while ago for $50.00, obviously it didn’t work. I have a guy in Panama working on it, and I prey that he can fix it. If he can, I will install it once my sister leaves, I will dance in happiness every time I use it.

Someone emailed me the correction to Chris’s toast last night, I will have to commit it to memory, and here you go. I’m raising a glass to all my friends whom I’ve never met through my website as I’m typing, thank you for enjoying projectbluesphere.com :

“There are good ships and there are wood ships, and ships that sail upon the sea. But the best ship is friendship, for this shall ever be”.

I have many friends which makes me a prosperous man.

Thank you everyone.

Peace, Love, and friendship.

Hate mail!!!! ARRRGGGGGG

Click to view full size image

Okay, enough with the hate mail, here are some pictures, just kidding  : )

I’ve gotten a lot of emails requesting pictures. It will be easier when I get my new computer, but remember, I can only email pictures when I get to an internet connection. It’s too expensive for me to email pictures through the satellite phone from the boat. I found a bar on the Island that has WIFI, and if I buy beer, I can hook up for free, not a bad deal eah? I’ll take a picture of the bar tonight to let you know what it’s like. Happy hour & dancing is after 21:00 (9pm) when beers are a buck. I emailed some other photos to my buddy David who runs the website. He’ll put them in the photo album soon. We should all thank David (ESPECIALLY ME) as he works hard on the site (for free), while I sit in exotic locations doing whatever it is that I do. I couldn’t maintain this site without the help of David, and my good college buddy Ken who handles everything else for me (Distribution, etc.)

Here are a few images of where I am (Isla Contodora). The sunset was taken from the cockpit last night, and I snapped the picture of Namaste at anchor this morning.

I spent a wonderful evening making sushi (REALLY GOOD) with my friends (Chris & Maggy) on “Contigo” last night. I can’t exactly remember the toast that Chris made when we opened the rum, but it went something like this:

“Some say the best ships are made of wood, and some say the best ships are made of steel. I say…, the best ships, are the friendships made at sea”. I’ll drink to that any day.

Chris & Maggy will be sailing across the Pacific with me next February/March. “Contigo” took off for another anchorage this morning, I’m staying put for the moment. I’m getting back into the slower “Island life” that I love so much. No more stress or heart palpitations. Just good fishing, friends, music, reading and of course writing and taking pictures & video.

Speaking of which, I just saw on ebay today that Sony has come out with a new HDV (High-Definition) video camera (HC3 or something) for around fifteen hundred bucks. I’m really going to try and make that happen. The image is far superior to the mini-dv video that I’m shooting now, and is acceptable as a professional broadcast format. I wand to document my Pacific crossing in Hi-Def!

Well that’s it for tonight.

Peace everyone.

New Location

South Side of Contodora N 08 37.344 W 079 02.111

It got windy (20 kts) from the north yesterday, and that was no good for me so I motored (20 mins) to the southern shore of Contodora.

I was sitting in the cockpit last night and noticed some large fish swimming around Namaste, obviously attracted to my cockpit light. I shot one from the cockpit, I don’t know what it was but it made a yummy stew.

Today I moved just a bit and picked up a mooring and came across some close friends of mine from the Carribean. (Chris & Maggy) on “Contigo” (means “with you” in Spanish).

Chris & I went spear fishing; I shot a grouper, and a trigger. Chris shot a monster Trigger that we’ll be turning it into Sushi tonight.

I don’t have a girlfriend onboard so your instant messages keep me company. Let me know how life in the “real world” is.

Anyway, I need to go clean some fish.

Love to all.

Another tuff day!

Liberty & Genesis took off early for espiritu santo. Supposedly the nicest anchorage in the Pearlas. I didn’t go for a number of reasons.

I’d like to do some exploring with my sister and see it for the first time together, I think it will be more fun for us, and secondly I wanted to check out Isla Contodora on Saturday night. There seems to be some cool bars, and I want to check out the rest of the island.

I shot a nice grouper for lunch and read the day away, not too shabby.

I have a charter coming out the last week of July (I’ll be 41 then, EEEK), and another the 2nd week of August. I have a buddy coming out to visit the last week of August, and I’m planning to head south in October/November. I know some of you are still on the fence about chartering, but if you would like to see this place it’s time to make a commitment. I’m thinking of posting a charter on ebay with a lo-reserve so some of you who don’t have much (like me) could still experience this wonderful place.

Peace, love, and grouper fillet!

Sashimi

A low-pressure system developed in the area and it’s been quite grey & rainy with a touch of lightening, I love days like this, I caught a bunch of water and scrubbed the decks with fresh water.

Aki got up earlier then me (to much sake last night) and went spear fishing on his own in the morning. He shot 2 fat snappers, and a small trigger. I went later and shot a large trigger and a grouper. We invited the crew of Genesis (Germans) to Liberty, and had a large sashimi lunch. I came back to Namaste for a nap, and its dark, where has the day gone?

I may move over a few islands tomorrow or maybe not. Liberty & Genesis are going, but I haven’t really decided yet. I love being with friends, but I love being alone as well.

I’m excited to share this place with my sister and the charters that will be visiting me this summer, it’s really quite nice, and by the looks of it, I should be able to provide some fresh fish. The spear fishing here is abundantly far superior to the places I’ve been in the Caribbean. The fish are everywhere!

It’s Friday so we may go to shore and check out the town. I kind of feel like staying in and reading a good book, I have lots on board as I had been planning to cross the Pacific.

Anyway, keep the instant messages coming, I love the company.

Peace, Love & Sashimi.

Life’s tuff

Ahhhhhhh, another wonderful day.

I went spear fishing today, and shot a good size jack, at the very last second, as I was hauling him in the dingie, he got away. I’m out of practice. Not to mention a bit sun burned.

I can see my friends Aki on “liberty”, and Ollie on “Genesis” on the horizon, they should be here in an hour or so. I wish I had an offering of fresh fish, but oh well, another day.

I was bidding on a windless on ebay, but just got the instant message that I lost it, arggg!

I need to get cooking.

Chao.

Peace, Love, & Paradise!

Good Day

Today was a good day. I got on the SSB net this morning with s cup of tea, and said hello to some friends. Propagation was even good enough I spoke to some friends in the San Blas.

I cleaned most of the bottom this morning, I really, REALLY need a new bottom job (Anti-fowling paint).

I rowed to shore and had an early beer (It was really hot) and strolled around this beautiful island. Many of Panamas elite & politicians have home here, it’s quite nice.

I’m planning on making bread in the morning, and my Japanese friends on “Liberty” will be arriving tomorrow night.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been on vacation (around 5 months), it’s nice.

I’m also planning on doing some spear fishing tomorrow.

Peace everyone.

Peace!

Location: Isla Contodora (North Anchorage) 08 38.053 N 79 02.232 W

It’s been a while that Namaste & I sat in Paradise. When was it last, Isla Linton in the Caribbean?

The water is clear here, the islands are beautiful, but very different then the San Blas. There are coconut palms of course, but the islands are dense with jungle, and beautiful rock formations. I can hear parrots in the trees. I’m excited to go exploring and take some video.

The motor seems okay, I didn’t push it too hard, but she didn’t quit today. One of the subscribers sent me an email, he has the same motor. He said, “they never run good, they just run forever”, I guess that’s a good thing.

I got 3 reefing drills today as squall front, after squall rolled through, and 3 nice showers : )

I’m going to clean the bottom tomorrow and go into town, see what’s around.

I’ve been up since 3am so goodnight.

Pease, love, and Paradise again!!!!

on the road again.

Well today I’m going to the mall to see a movie. After that I’m going to the Japanese market to pick up a few things, pay my bill here at the club, and ready the boat. I’ll probably take off for the Las Pearlas around 3-4 am.

My sister (Sara) is coming to visit me on the 8th for a few weeks, which will be really fun; it’s been a long time since I’ve seen her. It will be nice to get a “Family Fix”.

She will be bringing me my new laptop so I can get to work on the next DVD. Dell was very cool about letting me purchase through the educational discount program since I have so many schools following the site. I’m really excited about getting back to work and putting another DVD together. I need a creative outlet, and working on the boat isn’t it. Writing is cool, but I particularly enjoy working in a visual format. It will be nice to be able to post pictures again.

The next DVD will cover Colombia, The San Blas Islands, transiting the Panama Canal, the Las Pearls Islands, and possibly the Darién Jungle. I can motor Namaste up a few rivers deep into the Darién and spend some time with the Embera Indians. My favorite time was living with the Kuna Indians; perhaps the Embera will accept me as warmly as the Kuna had. I hear they still hunt with poisons blow guns, I’d like to try that.

Panama is really such an amazing place; I’m looking forward to my time here now.

I will not have access to my email for a while, so if anyone wants to send a message, or are interested in a charter, please send me an instant message through the website, or call me on the cell phone (507) 6665.4159 I hear the phone will work in some of the islands.

Peace, Love, & Coconuts everyone.

Alex

Just a slow day!

All is well at the Balboa Yacht Club.

I’m doing a 5k walk in the morning sponsored by the UN for world hunger, seems like a good idea, and my hand is healing up well.

The batteries that I bought 4 months ago were bad. After charging them fully and checking them with a hydrometer they only showed a 70% charge. Marine Warehouse was totally cool about it and replaced all 4 T-105’s without question. I did try equalizing them with no luck.

I filled up the water tanks today (4 rowing trips to the fuel dock (65 Gallons)) and really wiped myself out by noon in the intense Panamanian heat. After that I rowed over and had a few cold ones with my friend Aki on Liberty, it was a pretty good day all in all. We ate a Pineapple, and went out for dinner.

It’s raining and my water catcher is filling up a few extra jugs that I had on deck. I know I’m getting old because I’m really looking forward to crawling into the v-birth with a cup of tea and a book. It’s a good night for that with the sound of the rain pelting on the decks.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday.

It looks like I’ll be off to the Pearlas on Monday, or Tuesday morning.

Cheers.

Peace, Love, and Coconuts.

Having to scoot fast.

I now know one of the reasons why the sailing Gods didn’t want me to cross the Pacific this year.

The La Playeta anchorage is a safe anchorage most of the year with the exception of the rainy season in a Southerly Swell & wind.

Well night before last it really started to blow, and the seas kicked up, I should have got out faster but I “Bit the Bullet” and didn’t get a wink of sleep during a very turbulent night. The next morning I decided to “bug out” and had a hell of a time getting my chain up, it took about 45 minutes. I really need to get an anchor windless in these Pacific conditions. I got away with not having one in the Caribbean with no tides, but this was entirely a different story.

Anyway, I motored (Seems okay) up to the Balboa Yacht Club and grabbed a mooring.

Cheers everyone.

– Alex

Slashed

I really slashed my hand open today (on a hose clamp) working in the engine room.

I found an octapus in the strainer, a small fish in my sea-water intake, and a clump of silacone in the cooling water line, dont ask me how that got there. I aso ran some muratic acid through the motor, and managed to get it all over myself, not the best day, and oh yeah, IT WAS REALLY HOT!!!! Not that I´m bitching or anything, life is awsome. I also bought, and installed a new oil pressure sender for the alarm, the last one didnt work, and re-wired a bunch of stff.

Tomorrow, I´m going to scrape and wire brush the motor, and sprey some rust remover on it. The following day I´ll paint it. Maybe if it looks new it will work better, what do you think?

I´m going to take off to the Pearlas in a few days, and run the hell out of the motor and see what happens, maybe the old girl will get her 99th wind!

Cheers and my best to all.

Peace. Love, AND HOPEFULLY A MOTOR THAT WORKS!!!!

– Alex

Motor is running

Sorry I´ve been out of touch, but when I´m covered in motor oil and parts are all over the boat, I get kind of anti-social :(

I got the motor running, it seems okay, but I want to take it out and subject it to a constant load to see if it over heats. I´m going to head for the Las Pearlas next week to do some scouting for my charters. I´ve also decided to cut another DVD which should be available in 4-5 months.

My buddy Roger just came back from the Pearlas. He wrote a fantastic book that I think everyone interested in cruising should read.

Cheers everyone, I´ll be writing more again.

Peace love & coconuts.

– Alex

Reading

I´ve been into the reading mood for a few days and knocked out a few paper- backs. I had 6, 5 gallon containers of diesel lashed on deck which I sold today, I´ll try to keep the jugs at a buddys house, so I can use them next season.

I have 2 charters in the bank, and I´m still trying to figure out how to attack the repair/re-power thing. I´ve also foud a good guy to work on the motor, or replace it. He´s a good ol´boy (Joe) from the midwest, got hitched, and has been down here working on boats for the last 12 years.

Boy, I have alot of food on board I really dont want to eat now that I have access to fresh stuff :( , oh well!

My phone number is correct. 5076.665.4159 it has an extra digit as all the cells phnes down here do. I few people called through SKYPE, so I know thats possible.

I´m going to head back to the boat and work on another article for L&A.

Cheers everyone.

Peace, Love, and Panama

Time to go to work.

Well things are looking up.

I have one charter sold (Jeff), and it’s looking like 2 others (Mike & Buddy).

It looks like I’ll be chartering in the Las Pearlas this summer to pay for the motor. That doesn’t sound so bad (Sailing, diving, spear-fishing and bond fires), things could be worse, eah? On the new plan, I’ll be off to the Galapagos in 8 months, then across the Pacific.

I really think fifteen hundred bucks is quite the deal for captain & boat for a week. I’ll customize each charter to fit your interests. I know some people are more interested in sailing, while others want to spend more time exploring the Islands, snorkeling, and really taking a break. I’ve learned something about chartering over the years, it’s a catch 22. Where you find charter boats, you find commercialized “Plastic” paradise. 95% of the Las Pearlas are uninhabited. I know one thing; we’ll have good food, music, and a nice thick slice of un-spoiled Paradise. I’ll send you home with a good tan, a bunch of great pictures & video, and an experience you’ll never forget.

Take the plunge, you won’t regret it, flights are cheap.

I just need 2 more commitments. If you’re interested please give me a call/email as soon as you can. You can reach me by dialing internationally (00, or 001) then 5076-665-4159.

Peace, Love, and Paradise!

Lets go sailing!

Click to view full size image

As most of you know my trip across the Pacific was abruptly cut short by a serious engine failure.

My old motor is pretty worn out. Sea water is in the oil, and diesel in the exhaust water. One cylinder runs extremely hot (taking the entire load), and water is not pumping through the cooling system well. I could rebuild her at a large expense of money and time, but in the end, I’ll still have a 30 year old, sea-water cooled diesel with many miles ahead of me. Re-powering is the answer. I got a bid to re-power Namaste here in Panama from a reputable company at $7,500.00, but how to swing it?

The wheels in my head have really been turning trying to figure out a way to make it happen. I’ve watched my own DVD a few times and have re-realized that it’s not the destinations, but the voyage that’s important to me, and being stuck here without a motor is part of my voyage. Never the less, I want to get moving for myself, and to keep the website interesting and exciting. When I first conceived projectbluesphere.com, when it was still to be an “on-line” TV show, I was going to have the subscribers actually come cruising with me to truly make Project BlueSphere an interactive experience.

So many people have inquired about chartering Namaste, and so few have found the time. The charters that I’ve done have been wildly successful. You can read about their experiences onboard Namaste in the forums section of projectbluesphere.com.

I want to sell 5, week long sailing adventures this week for $1,500.00 each. You’ll get 7 days onboard Namaste sailing, exploring, snorkeling, or whatever comes. If I can sell the 5 packages this week I’ll re-power Namaste (New Motor) at once, and be under way in a few weeks. Your week charter is redeemable whenever, and wherever you want during my circumnavigation. If you’d like to take your charter this summer, I’d suggest booking your week and cruising the Las Pearlas Islands with me. It’s a stunningly beautiful tropical paradise where they just shot survivor. Or you could choose the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Africa, you name it. For $1,500.00 you’ll have a week of adventure in the bank, kind of like having “Charlie’s golden ticket” in your hip pocket. You’ll also be in my next DVD and a permanent member of the Project BlueSphere experience. It also might be a nice gift for someone just about to enter, or graduating from college. I bummed around Paris the summer before my first year of college, I’ll never forget it.

If you’re really up for an adventure we could talk about a charter (one person) from Panama to the Marquesas, via the Galapagos. This would roughly be a 2 month commitment and cover over 4000 miles of ocean. This is the “Big Daddy” of ocean crossings. I had wanted to save the experience for myself, but perhaps that’s a bit selfish. The door is now open, if you really want to become a sailor, this is your chance. I’ll be blowing my shot at a membership to the “Joshua Slokum” Society by not solo-circumnavigating, but what the hell. I wouldn’t want to be a member of any society that would have me anyway.

If you’re interested or have questions, please send me an email or call me at 5076-665-4159. If you’re in the states you’ll have to dial internationally “001” (I think) before the number, and yes there is an extra digit.

I can promise one thing, I will provide you with an adventure that will last a life-time.

If you’d like to watch the old, online episode of when I re-built the motor in Charleston South Carolina, take a peek at Episode #9

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Mark Twain

Peace, love, and “Let’s go cruising” !!!

Got a phone today

I tried to take the oil out of my motor this morning, and the pump wouldn’t handle it. There seems to be a gelatinous sludge in it, what the hell is that all about?

I’m waiting to hear back from Volvo, fingers crossed. I bought a phone today; if anyone wants to chat my incoming calls are free. My number is 507 6-665-4159.

I had to turn off my fridge as I can’t really charge, but between the solar panels, and my wind generator, I seem to be doing okay.

I need to go to Immigration and the Port Captain today and check back in. I’m also going to visit the American Embassy and see if there is a chance I could work here. If I have to go back to the States and work I would leave Namaste at the Balboa Yacht Club.

I was reading some cruising guides Last night. If I miss my window to cross the Pacific, and it’s looking that way, I will fix the motor and explore Ecuador, Peru, and Chili. Not many people explore Peru, and Chile, it might be cool. It would also change my route west next season to include Easter Island.

Where will the winds take me?

If you want to watch one of my old on-line videos that includes the last time I rebuilt my motor, enjoy.

Episode #9

Peace everyone.

Enough of that!

I hate it when people feel sorry for themselves; sorry I had to expose you to it. I think I’m loosing a little elasticity in my bullet-proof attitude with age. Ten years ago this wouldn’t have fazed me. I watched my own video last night, something I haven’t seen for about a year. It really got me to thinking. If I can pull off project BlueSphere, I can pull off fixing/replacing my motor in my sleep, “Wooden Ships, and Iron men right”?

What’s the worst that can happen? I spend a few months being a diesel mechanic, scrounging for parts, and then explore the Perlas Islands, Darien jungle, and Peru before shoving off across the Pacific in 9 months after the Pacific hurricane season has passed. Not so bad right? I’ve wanted to visit “Matchu Pitchu” (Spelling?) anyway. Cruising is about adapting to your environment, and adapt I will!

I’m posting some pictures of Isla Taboga where I spent a few days this week. It’s only 7 miles away, and if I’m going crazy I can always sail there for a few days and sail back. I’ll try to post a few logs this week, but my current plan is to go buy a cell phone (Yikes), and a compression tester. I downloaded the shop manual for my motor a few years ago when I rebuilt the motor in Charleston South Carolina. If it’s beyond repair, I’ll figure something out. Damn it all to hell, this will not get the better of me.

Here is video that contains my motor rebuild a few years ago: Motor Rebuild Episode

Do you know you could buy a house on Taboga for 10-15K. Amazing isn’t it?

Peace, Love, and lots and lots of tools!
