ipod

I’ not a big fan of technology anymore but I’m convinced my ipod will make my life better.

Hugh downloaded and brought me a copy of itunes and I finally got it working. I spent yesterday morning organizing my music and loading up my 4GB Nano.

I rowed to shore listening to Van Morrison, pausing to look at the magnificent spires which seem to reach for the heavens. The mountains here are truly unique and I’ve never seen anything like them…, magnificent!

The beach was full of children skim boarding. As soon as I got to shore I was approached by a mob of 12 young girls (9-12) wanting to listen to my ipod. They lined up smiling and giggling, never thinking I would refuse them. I wanted to give them a new experience and I switched the music to a little opera (Bocelli), and turned up the volume. They seemed to go through a transformation after I put on the headphones. They had a bubbly nervous energy at first, but after a minute or so of music they calmed, a few girls even closed their eyes to savor the new sound. One girl looked up at me with total conviction and said “ce tre manifique” (it is very beautiful)! I don’t think any of them have ever listened to opera or any classical music for that matter. They were all very polite and thanked me before they started discussing the strange “white mans” music amongst themselves.

I spent the afternoon roving around town listening to music, picking fruit, and looking for chickens. The hills are full of goats and pigs; I wish I had a .22. I’m thinking of starting a new diet. I would like only to eat meat that I kill. It seems more natural, responsible, and humane that way.

Aki is going to the other side of the island today. We spotted a nice cove on the way to the airport the other day. I’ll probably head for Nuka Hiva in the morning, and return to the west side of Ua Poe on my way to the Tuamotoes in a week or so. I really want to get a photo of the spires of Ua Poe up on the website and want to find an internet connection.
