The days have been slow & hot. I’ve been snorkeling and exploring Navy Island gathering fruit. There are no fish to spear on the reef (fished out) but there are many beautiful reef fish to watch. I had Uni (Sea urchin) a few times in sushi restaurants, and Yuck, didn’t like it. The Sushi chef said it’s much better fresh, I still say YUCK, it’s not something one should put in their mouth, the spines are their for a reason.
A friend of mine traveled around the island with his girlfriend and asked if I’d watch his dog for a few days, I agreed. “Salty” is a female Lab, and quite a bundle of energy. The cool thing about Salty is she doesn’t go on the boat, All you have to do is let her swim twice a day and she does her business. Salty is quarantined, and not allowed on land so she gets her exercise by swimming. I almost shot Salty by accident last week. I was snorkeling out on the reef, no one, or boats around. I was swimming along when all of a sudden something was on my back and clawing at me. I instinctively flipped the safety off of the spear gun, flipped around, and almost shot her. I’ve swam with quite a few sharks in my life, and never been bothered, but the idea of an attack always lurks in the back of my mind. Thankfully I didn’t spear “Salty” and she was a great guest to have for a few days. She did chew up some of my good sailing gloves, and an LED Head torch, but that’s what puppies do.
We’re all still watching the weather closely, and might get a break late this weekend. I don’t think the crossing will be a nice one, but it will be nice to be there. Everyone I’ve spoken to who has been there, really enjoyed it and says it really cheap.
Mangos are turning into a staple in my diet; I eat up to 10 a day, yummy. The outboard I broke in the Bahamas finally fell apart yesterday. I almost lost it to the sea. The bracket broke off, it desperately needs attention. I called a local dealer, and the parts would take 2-3 weeks for delivery, I’ll have to deal with it in Columbia.
I feel like I’m starting to settle into Island life, and it’s really cool. I’m really looking forward to making it to the San Blas Islands (Panama) after Columbia. I’m going to try and document the Cuna (spelling?) Indians while I’m there, and explore the islands extensively.
I’ll get the next episode up when I get to Cartegena.
