Slowing Down

Guinevere went to her fathers on Saturday and Sam and I have been taking it quiet and slow. Sam’s spending P1030996the days reading and I’m at the helm making lists and planning our escape to the Bahamas. Sam has made 3 loaves of incredibly wonderful bread and a big batch of fresh pesto.

The morning we left Saint Augustine I pulled up a piling with the anchor chain.  There was an under-water hazard listed on the map but after scanning the area with the fish finder I decided it was a good place to drop the hook. If you look at a chart on the South side of the bridge of lions you’ll see a shallow spot in the anchorage with a under water hazard, I think I removed it for everyone :)

Anyone know why a diesel motor would leak oil with a dirty racor (fuel filter)? It makes no sense to me but my oil leak slowed substantially after replacing a really dirty racor. I cant really come up with a theory so if you have one let me know.

2010 is upon us. It’s time to make some serious resolutions that better our lives. If you’ve been dreaming of cruising there is no time like the present. We are in a really awful economy and if you can swing it, its really a buyers market in the boating world. I cant believe it but people seem to be giving their boats away. That goes for you Ross and Buddy!

P1030993 we should arrive in Stuart on New Years day. I’m sure i have a week or so of projects but we will be off to the Bahamas shortly. This all seems like a dream come true to me. I cant believe my good fortune in finding Splendid, Sam, and Guin. Splendid has been a 2 year project but I believe her to be sound although still missing fairing work and paint.

We have a sound ship filled with all the latest safety gear (Epirb, Spot, Life-raft, etc…), hearts filled with dreams, and shallow pockets, just the way I like it. Its time to live on fresh bread, home made wine, beer, tofu, soy milk, and pesto. I’ve asked Sam to keep an accounting of our expenses and will share the real story. We are going to travel lean and self-sufficient.

Happy New Year everyone.

Sail far and live slowly.

How was that last batch of wine anyway? It had awhile to clear while you were gone.

  2. The last batch was great, We made a welches grape juice recipe (cheap) and I added some left over chocolate from a previous port batch.

  3. Congrats on your future journey. Very exciting. We dream of the same, possibly someday soon. :) We currently own “Splendiferous”, a catalina 30 for cruising the Puget Sound.
Best wishes for the new year. Hope to one day see you out there. :)

Maybe you had a fuel leak and mixed with oil. Changing the filter really shouldn’t have anything to do with the oil leak.

  7. no fuel leak, maybe just a strange coincidence ???

    Hey Alex ,

Here is my 2 pence worth,

When the engine fuel pump has to pull fuel through a dirty filter, it has to ‘work harder’ (bigger vacuum) to get the fuel through. There may be a slight leak at the fuel pump. Then when the pump is working harder some of that pressure is escaping through the pump and over pressurising the oil sump. Check your oil pressure gauge first, or borrow one that goes on the dipstick. It may well be that it is even leaking from the fuel pump gasket, knowing Perkins…

The other possibility is that maybe the higher pressure fuel is then allowing the piston pressure to escape past the rings a little again over pressurising the sump.

    Hope this helps.

alex, I just tried to order your second DVD from the store but it came up with illegal item/illegal weight and some other stuff but would not let me go to the checkout. Then I tried to e-mail the support staff and it wanted my POP e-mail address which I haven’t known for years. Could you e-mail support and let them know something is wrong and have them e-mail me when it is fixed. Been following you since you left the Chesapeake, anxious to see ya’ll get out of the states again. Post more video !!! Karl manzer t_framer@yahoo.com
