My friend Jamie

Click to view full size imageMy buddy Jamie is here for a spell.

We are off to look at a Allied ketch this morning. I don’t like to buddy boat but I’m really excited about the possibility of traveling with Jamie again for a while. He recently finished his circumnavigation on a little 25′ boat (possibilities), and did it around all 3 capes over 10 years. Hi has also acquired a wonderful partner (Lisa) and is looking for a bit bigger of a home to travel on, funny how that works. Sam and Lisa are hitting it off well and Guinevere thinks she’s the cats meow.

Ultimately Jamie would like to find a cruising boat with a good keel for under 6k. He likes a simple boat with windvane and no bells & whistles. Just a good rig, solid, with a full, or modified full keel. It doesn’t need paint or varnish or lots of lights at the nav-station. If you know of a boat let me know as he wants to buy ASAP.

I put a new starting battery in Splendid the other day and feel good about having 1000CCA to turn over the motor. I still need to do some wiring in the engine compartment and mount the radar dome but leaving to go south is just around the corner and the sweet smell of cruising fills the air. Sam and Guin are as excited as I am and Guin is learning all about the Bahamas. She sits with me as I pour myself over charts and cruising guides.

Sail far and live slowly.

you may already know these sites but…
here is a good site to search craigslist listings: tinyurl.com/clsearch

in that price range, ebay may be your best bet. I’ve seen some incredible deals lately, its killing me :)
and sailingtexas.com is the best site for current, private owner listings.

Last I knew it was moved into the Crystal River on the NW coast of FL and listed at $3,000. The engine supposedly runs great.
I looked at it when it was in the Gulfport Municipal Marina in the fall of ’08.
It’ll need new sails and a bit of deck replaced, but since it’s a teak-over-plywood deck it shouldn’t be that hard to epoxy a new section of deck in.

The hull is double-layer of mahogany planking hot-molded with resorcinol glue, which all looked clear and rot-free.

I didn’t like the interior layout (like a Contessa 26), so I kept looking.

  4. It was great to meet Jamie and Lisa the other night. Hurry up and get out of the slip SOON. See ya south

    Hey Alex,

I’ve been living on my Allied Mistress MK III ketch for three years and cruising Central and South America for one year now. I also moderate the Allied Boat Owners yahoo forum. If I can answer any questions for Jamie about these old boats I’d be more than happy to help. Allied built great, rugged boats, but they’ve got a few known problems.

    Lee

  10. Lee, Sitting here with Jamie, we’ve looked at a few Allied’s. What are the few known problems????

If she is deck stepped then see if there is rot around the base of the compression post – common for Seawind II’s.

Will water fill the sink up, via the drain, on a tack, this is common on some of the Seawinds.

Minor – Side Decks are too small. No easy engine access. Anchor rodes chafe.

    Cheers,

    –Eric
