If you guys were watching the spot and saw us tun around, here is why. Fasaga’s mast is 61′ tall and the Julia Tuttle bridge is only 56′ tall.We had to turn around and head back to Ft. Lauderdale where we are anchored in Lake Sylvia dancing at anchor in 30 knots on wind.
Fasaga has a in mast furling for the main and I haven’t been able to get the main out, ARG! I worked on it for a while today and managed to fix it (I think). There is too much wind to fully bring out the sail at anchor but I did get it started. The wind should abate on Tuesday, and we will make the last stretch to the keys, it has been a really long delivery and I really want to get back home. The up side is Sam and I have had the last 10 days to ourselves and it has been really nice. We are both missing Guin and she comes home today.
I’ve also managed to spend countless hours pouring over cruising guides and planning our trip south. Sam and I are both getting quite excited to do the Bahamas, T&C’s, DR, and beyond.
Whats up guys, my last log had 4 comments and Sam had 16? So thats how it going to be eah!
Sail far and live slowly.

Alex, I watched the first video again the other night. I really enjoy the DVD’s. I can’t wait for some more videos. When are you going to start doing more video logs? I know you have a lot on your plate right now. I’m really looking forward to seeing how different it is cruising as a family. Hopefully you will give us some insight into the major differences and how it affects your decisions.
Hang in there, it’s be blowing 20-25 kts in Jax all day

Alex,

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help when you called me about the sail. My 380 just went up and down like a regular boat. I’m checkin’ with a buddy of mine tomorrow when I get back to FMB and see if I can shed some light your way. Also thanks for the confidence in the CDI furling system. I’ve never sailed with one before and I’ll be calling and checking in when I get Trillium in my hands in the Bahamas. I was wondering how it would work out with 40k pounds of boat… I guess I’ll see.
Sit tight and looks like Tuesday will be a better day for us all.
I just love the Explorer Chartbook on the Near Bahamas. I’ve been checking out the routes. What do you think of: Green Turtle to Hole in the Wall to Chub to South Ridding Rock to Alligator Reef to Marathon to FMB…
Never shot across that area before… But the Chartbook has great charts. Water looks skinny, but looks to be enough for Trillium’s 5’8″… Any thoughts?

Have no fears, many of us read and don’t write. I, for one, start each workday, with your log. Keep ’em coming. I’ve been following since the purchase of Namaste. The occassional update on the wanderings of that stout little vessel are appreciated. Steve
Capt Paul,
Yup, never had a problem with my CDI. They are cheap but simple. I have a pro-furl on the jib now. I got the main fixed after pushing the excess sail into the track with a paint scraper. I’m hoping to be out in the early am, fuel, and go. I’d like to knock out the trip south in 3 days using the hawks channel, but it looks like another cold front comming in Tuesday night (winter weather).
Cheers.

alex?????? roller furling?????????generator???????a.c.??????????????have you come over to the darkside??????? leaning towards hawaii around the hollidays…..good fishing cpt g
We encountered a bridge problem ourselves last year when sailing to Alaska! We arrived in Juneau without a working alternator & needing a fuel fill up and discovered upon approaching the bridge that our mast was too tall to go under the bridge! Forcing us to turn around also. Unfortunately for us the fuel stations are on the other side of this bridge (crazy), which meant having to fuel up in jerry cans with the dingy for many, many trips! All part of the adventure right?!
Enjoy yourselves and safe travels!
Alex:
What was your experience going into Deer Key? Approach depth. Difficulty? Visibility? Etc. Haven’t poked in there yet? Just curious.

An interesting article on sailboat cruising in the Caribbean; the whole travel section is about that area.
