Hugh Again. I think Alex is getting lazy about writing his log. He hasn’t written one since I’ve been here.
We left Hive Oa yesterday at about 3 pm local time. We sailed through the night, through two squalls, of course during my watch, and are still about 2 hrs from Ua Pou.
Nights at sea in the tropical pacific are beyond description. All night long we were accompanied by phosphorescent sea creatures, some tiny and others huge. Sometimes we could hear some large thing leaping out of the water and splashing back down. When I shined a flashlight into the water I could see bright red eyes staring back.
It is great to be out in the pacific sailing slowly to a beautiful island. We can see Nuku Hive to the North, and Ua Huka to the East.
I miss my girlfriend, but I can’t wait to get out here and do it myself. Anyone who is on the fence or who knows they are going but think they need more money or more stuff should come spend a week with Alex. He is a perfect host (he stayed awake through most of my first watch in case I needed him) and is about as knowledgeable as a sailor can be about how to do this right, and right now.
By the way, we used to take turns shooting chickens, but Alex got so much better than me that I gave up. He provided us with more chicken before we left Hive Oa. It is nice to have some kind of food for free as even beer is amazingly expensive (more than $21 per six pack.) When we checked out of Hive Oa we checked again with the Gendarme about the chickens. They told us to take all we want.
One of Alex’ friends caught a 35 lb wahoo yesterday, so we will have sushi tonight
Alex would probably say:
Peace, Love and Wahooooooo…
