Drifter

Thank God for my drifter! I’ve had to scrape the last 100 miles off the surface of the Pacific with my fingernails. 888 miles to go!

I got up this morning and Namaste was hobbling along at just over a knot.

I noticed a fare amount of growth on the bottom yesterday and toyed with the idea of doing a quick clean today but I had a shark dream last night so I’m not too jazzed with the idea now. In my dream I was playing near the boat on a very small inflatable (maybe 3’) out at sea. The large waves would roll me and the inflatable, I was having a blast. I was thinking “how cool, I can’t wait to write about this in a log” then I looked under the water at a large great white and calculated If I could make it back to the boat. I didn’t pinch myself, but quickly woke up. Instead I raised the drifter just as the first light touched the darkness and have been reading ever since. I’ve never read so much in my life as in this last month.

When I was provisioning in Panama I bought some vacuum-sealed steaks. They are pre-cooked and quite salty but hit the spot when you want a dose of red meat. I’ve been saving my last one for a few weeks and was going to eat it to celebrate breaking a 1000 miles. They were supposed to be good for 3-4 weeks without refrigeration, it’s been around 5. I opened it today and it seemed fine. There was the smallest trace of something smelling bad and I thought it was my imagination. Just as I was about to cook it I threw it into the sea. The last thing I need is to be sick again. I’m really craving red meat and fresh stuff, oh well; it is not so far away. I have a few cans of meat on board; maybe I’ll try to brave one for dinner, “YUCK”!

These past few days are the first time I’ve really seen the sea the color it is in post cards. It’s quite blue. I can only imaging what it will look like draped around a South Pacific island, tick tock Alex, tick tock.

Anyway, the drifter is calling me for a trim, I’m making 3kts..

Cheers everyone, and greetings from the deep blue sea.

Alex
