I cant believe it, I made it, I’ve single-handed to South America, WAHOOOOOO!!!!!!
So many people warned me about coming to Columbia and I’d like to say a few things. My experience in my first day has been nothing but wonderful. The people at Club Nautico have been extraordinarily friendly & helpful. They handled my check in, and getting me into a slip. I think they could tell I’m a bit delirious from exhaustion.
A boat was robbed here last year, as a result, cruising to Cartagena has been getting a bad wrap on the internet, fewer cruisers have been coming here, and I think that’s ridiculous. When I lived in LA, there were at least a few robberies a week on the docks, and I was in a really nice marina. The cruising guide books also discourage against cruising to Jamaica, I’m so glad I didn’t follow suit. I’ll let you know more as time goes on, but for first impressions, I’m really happy to be here. I’m going to spend some time at Club Nautico, make repairs, and go back to the states for a few months to work. I’ll show you what it looks like in the next episode.
I have been craving a good steak for over 2 months so I set out to the super market. It hit me like a ton of bricks, major culture shock. There I was…, in the middle of a beautiful…, air-conditioned…, gourmet…, super market. I was in awe. The smell of fresh ground Columbian coffee filled the isles and mixed with the aroma of fresh, FRESH, produce. I spent an hour wondering the isles, trying to decipher the Spanish labels; I only had bottled water in my basket. Van Morrison played in my head; I was in grace-land. Finally fresh meat, a real baguette, luscious cheeses, I wanted to cry out in utter happiness…, and I did! A woman looked at me strangely when I picked up a round of brie, touching it, squeezing it, smelling it, I started laughing in excitement. I was in Love. NO CANNED CRAP FOR ME TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! Tonight I will feast like a king, no…, not a king…, a god! I will take a shower for as long as I want on the boat and plug into shore power. I have 110v power and an endless supply of fresh water for the first time in 3 months. I’m going to play music (LOUD) without worrying how many amps I’m drawing, turn all the lights on, cook, feast, and sleep. The kind of sleep where you’re not worried about the anchor dragging, or a neighbor’s boat dragging into you. And tomorrow I will re-wash all my dishes in fresh water. There’s a salt water hand pump at the sink. My dishes are always covered in a layer of salt.
I nibbled at the baguette walking through the old Columbian streets. I realized something. Not to generalize or anything, but the streets are full of really, REALLY, beautiful Latin women. Perhaps I really am in Grace-land.
Either way, it’s kind of cool being back in civilization.
Big smiles today.
