Land and Sea

Newsletter – January 2006, Colon, Panama

Hi Everyone,

Well it’s time for another news letter.

My Panama Canal transit is about a month away. I’ve been working double time trying to get Namaste ready for my Pacific crossing to New Zealand. My Plan, once I transit the canal is to sail to Ecuador and get permits for the Galapagos Islands; it’s easier to do from the mainland.

After the Galapagos I’ll be setting sail for the Marquises in French Polynesia. I’ll figure out the rest of the route from there.

I just installed 4 new Trojan T-105 (6V) batteries, 3, 50 watt solar panels, and a 250 watt charge controller. I’ll also be installing a new Tropikool refrigeration system before I leave.

I bought an old Sea Tiger windless that I’m trying to rebuild as well. I just installed another roller on the bow for my Danforth anchor and picked up 100′ of 5/16ths chain for it. So many projects, so little money, but I’ll get the basics done. Namaste is an incredible little boat and I have full confidence in her ability at sea. I will do a detailed inspection of the rig before I go.

What will it be like being at sea for 5-8 weeks? I hope I don’t go nuts! I’m bringing a lot of books and I’m planning on shooting video logs every day as well as doing daily log updates. Hopefully I’ll be catching a lot of fish and having Sashimi dinners, YUMMY!!!.

I’m ready to leave the Caribbean and South America. My Spanish has gotten pretty good but it’s time to start a new chapter in my life. I started studying French. I’ve been spending countless hours each day plowing through cruising guides and charts. My dreams are filled with images of the South Pacific; I’m so excited I can’t express it in words.

Speaking of words, I just started writing for Latitudes & Attitudes magazine. If you’re interested in following my story from the beginning pick up the January issue and get a subscription, it’s a great magazine.
