The list

IMG_0150I’ve become afraid of writing out to do lists as they can be intimidating. My daily routine consists of waking up each day and playing with my charting program, pouring over world charts, and dreaming of where to sail. This acts as my inspiration to break out the tools and work for 5 hours or so in 90 degree heat.

I don’t regret taking on such a massive project (Splendid) with no money to speak of, and smile knowing I will grow old on such a fine classic yacht sailing the world. It’s just going to take a bit more determination!

My list is something as follows:

Pre-Pacific list * = must do

  • Haul out and install new marelon threw hulls while painting hull & bottom. *
  • Install my new Lofrans Falkon windlass. This involves buying a new gypsy & chain.*
  • Install new steering cable. *
  • Fabricate new stainless head plate. *
  • Finish painting and varnishing the interior.
  • install new Teflon seal kit on engine to stop leaking. *
  • Make new stanchions & life-lines. *
  • Build new icebox and install a refrigeration system.
  • Get a drifter and mizzen stay sail for downwind light-air sailing. *
  • If I can swing it build my CLC passagemaker dinghy, and sell the dyer and inflatable.
  • Get married to my bonnie lass! *
  • Finish The Minimalist Sailor *
  • if possible install a new diesel heater for colder climates.
  • Get backup alternator & starter, and various rebuild kits for pumps etc. *

_28386As you can see I have my hands full, epically with such a limited income. But I believe time and determination will pay off. In any event we are planning to transit the Panama canal around December. We both need a change and are looking forward to the Pacific, better fishing, and surfing.

I do have a few longer-term plans for Splendid. These pictures are of Anak, one of Splendid’s sister ships. I met a cool guy through the Cheoy Lee Owners association that had a 40’ midshipman Midshipman-bow-sprit(Anak) that was modified to maximize performance. At some point I’m going to build a bowsprit for Splendid and cutter rig her. I’m also seriously considering changing over to a sloop rig and extending the boom length, possibly the mast height, and extending the keel. This of course are longer term goals and possibly a good thing to do when we are in New Zealand and hopefully have the money.

548528_213198632127603_1658581562_nI’m posting these pictures of Anak as she is a source of inspiration for me and how I want to see Splendid transform.

That’s all for today guys. We take over the Bamboo house in a week or so. If anyone wants to come for a visit let me know. We will be doing local charters while running the Bambu House. If someone want to come and help me varnish and paint I may have a free bunk. I would only ask for 4-5 hours a day, 5 days a week in return for a place to stay. The bar will be open and Carla and I will be doing dinners 3, or 4 times a week to make extra money.

Peace my friends.

Sail far and live slowly.

  2. I know what you mean about lists, I write them everynight before I start again the next day. If you ever feel overwhelmed visit my website. My project is almost a complete rebuild, hope to relaunch by Christmas this year, yacht would have been out the water since 2006 and I am the third owner.
I have been following your blog for a few years, I have been wondering this year Alex do you guys do much sailing you don’t mention much in the blogs? Was glad to see the water maker project a go, has inspired me to look at ones here in Perth when there up for sale. Regards Johnny j

  3. Johnny. We sail locally, here and around San Blas. We got back a few months ago from 6 months in the islands. I’m hoping to cross the pacific again next season

    Good luck with your project.

  4. hey alex great post and what a list! I really wish I could break loose and come down there and work for a place to stay, that would be too cool. that bow sprit looks awesome on that boat, does it just bolt on?

I just bought my first sailboat the other day, its a 25 ft 1975 ericson with a swing keel. should be a pretty good boat to learn on and good for these shallow lakes here in oklahoma. Now I’m just looking for a little 9.9 hp outboard that I can hopefully find for a couple hundred bucks.

  5. Scott, I owened a 27′ Ericsson and cruised all over S. Cal with it, great boat.

  6. I cant believe my buddy is selling “Sara G”. A very special boat:

    Peace.

  9. I found a used passagemaker dinghy for sale in Florida. I wish I could get it. It’s not the take apart (nesting) model but I’m sure it could be adapted.
