Life seems a bit funny some times and I often feel quite blessed.
As you guys know Sam and I try to make the things we need and waste as little as possible. There is a certain comfort in making the things we need and living simply.
We were sitting around yesterday talking about making and waxing cheese. Making a batch of mozzarella is quite easy and can be done in about an hour. There are plenty of good youtubes on the subject. We then started talking about making pasta from scratch, not too hard we thought. We are all all about anything to save money while living healthier. We needed to go to the store for a batch of cilantro and garlic so Sam could whip up a fresh batch of pesto. We went to shore, assembled the bikes, and went out for a ride. Sam spotted a thrift store and drug me in. I love thrift stores and Good Will and think everybody should shop in them. I cant remember the last time I bought a pair of shorts or T-shirt in a regular store. Anyway, I was walking through the isles and poking threw boxes. I couldn’t believe my eyes. In a small box there was a beautiful stainless steel pasta press for $8! I called Sam over and she was equally as excited. We went to the farmers stand for pesto ingredients and hurried home.
I’m not such a big fan of whole wheat pasta but Sam made a batch of whole wheat dough and we rolled and cut it with our new machine. I’ve bought the “pseudo-fresh” pasta in the super market before but never had pasta like this. I’m not saying this out of love for Sam, but ‘DAMN’ that was the best pasta I’ve ever had!
It’s been a long expensive road over the past few years but we really have the tools and knowledge now to live very simply. I’m really looking forward to conveying this knowledge through my next film. Cruising is more than just sailing around the world, it’s an opportunity to live the way we were meant to. That may mean many things for many different people. For me, I just wish to be healthy and live a simple and peaceful life with my girls.
I’ve posted raffle tickets for sale in the store. If you are interested in a charter this may be a good opportunity for you. I will be selling 40 $50 tickets between now and May 1st. The winner will get a 1 week charter for himself and family (Couple and 2 kids) redeemable any time after May. Sam and I will not be doing “luxury” charters. But teaching like-minded families how to live simply on the sea. You get to pick your destination based on our voyage. I’d strongly recommend visiting us in the San Blas. I’ve done about a dozen charters over the years and every one has been a great success. If your interested visit the “charter donation” category in the ships store and buy a $50.00 donation or more. Good luck.
We are getting Guin back today. We put the Christmas lights from the tree up in her room. I think she will really like them.
Cheers everyone.
Sail far and live slowly.

I’ll throw a lot more karma your way !!!!
I’ve been struck for months now with the determination to get out there, very badly, and I THANK YOU for that. You have truly shown me that, the way we would need to live, is very possible. We are sailors at heart and have been shaving down our lifestyle for several years in an effort to “see if we could really do it”. After following you for a couple years or so it seems all things (family, friends etc.) have come into alignment enough for us to go ahead and do it.
Naturally not everything is or can be perfect for taking off, but we have come to the realization that we are sitting here spinnig our “wheels”, sure we are running a new business, paying the bills, but ya know, not really “making” money so fast we can’t leave it all behind.
It’s wierd, when you realize you really don’t care about all your best friends (you still care but you know what I mean) and thier lives as tangled as they are themselves.
Chrissy and I are really ALOT like you Alex, little did we know when I found your site, but REALLY, THANK YOU FOR SHARING EVERYTHING WITH US ALL,
I hope this didn’t sound like some kind of rant that should have been in the forums, or sound like just one of the hundreds of others that “say” they are going to do it.
We do what we say we are going to do, and somehow make it happen, THINKING LIKE A SAILOR
Peace, love and good karma going out to your family and Splendid, “I will cross you path one day”” “I will make that happen too”
Thank You, Dean
sounds like a wonderful life to me—tjis is our third day of a high of 29 degrees and even our heater cant keep up with the cold.–,—because of pops health we will just have to hang in—happy cookin
Alex, the Spot link page hasn’t shown any data for Splendid for a while now. I think it would be cool to watch your track over to the Bahamas. Anyway, hope y’all are keeping warm tonight.

We are re-designing the spot page so it keeps my track. The page from Spot erases all tracks after a week.

not to throw cold water on the good karmafest but today on the msn homepage, they’re advertising “Caribbean Confidential”
Comarca Kuna Yala, Panama
One of Panama’s largest indigenous groups, the Kuna people have lived on the Comarca Kuna Yala chain of more than 350 islands and coral cays since the 1600s. Kuna women make and sell molas, swatches of hand-embroidered cloth in vivid purples, reds, and blues that are typically made into garments. The men spend their days fishing for grouper and mackerel and leading visitors on boat trips to the archipelago’s dozens of uninhabited islands, some barely 100 yards wide. Many hotels here offer immersive, all-inclusive experiences. At Cabañas Uaguinega on Achutupu Island, 45 minutes from Panama City by air, the rate for a bamboo-walled, solar-powered cabin covers two tours or cultural outings daily and all meals (uaguinega.com, from $140 per person).
sadly, I’m predicting a Starbucks and a Subway by 2011(
Upandal,
There are only 2 island with what you could call hotels on them. Visiting those island would be like visiting Nassau and saying you have been to the Bahamas. The beauty of the San Blas lay on the other 348 islands and farther away from the range of the small kuna tour boats. Your prediction is quite off and It surly wont happen by 2011 but there culture is on the way out. The nice thing about the San Blas is they are not governed by Panama but by themselves. The elders would never allow a Starbucks or subway or any non-kuna owned business, and none of the islands have electricity save for a small generator to run lights for a few hours at night.
ALEX….I AGREE THAT THERE WILL BE NO KRISPY KREAM THIS DECADE……..THE HOTELS ARE OWNED, AS IS EVERYTHING, BY THE KUNA….. “PROGRESS”??????? CAN NOT BE STOPPED, BUT, CAN BE SLOWED….WITNESS HAWAII OF 100 YEARS AGO……OUTBOARDS, AIRPLANES ,GRINGOS, DRUG TRAFFIC, ALONG WITH NUMEROUS OTHER INVENTIONS HAVE CHANGED KUNA LIFE, BUT WITH THE CONSERATIVE MIND SET OF THE CONGRESSO, I BELIEVE IT WILL TAKE YEARS TO LOSE THEIR HERITAGE.. TO ME IT IS CRUISING HEAVEN NEXT TO CRUISING HELL…. “COLON”. MAY THE CURRENT BE WITH YOU ALWAYS …..G
I sure hope ya’ll are right, we’re a long way from getting out there but I really hope they’re still there when the wife the munchkin and I get going. I want my daughter to see how nice the simple things in life are.
