Land and Sea

Staring into my computer again!

I think I’ve been misleading some of you.

I’ve been posting a quote lately “Not all who wander are lost.” By Tolkien.

Indirectly I’ve been associating myself with this quote and I don’t know that I can, I feel as if I’m misrepresenting myself.

Night after night, day after day, and for the past 4 years I spend countless hours pouring over marine charts, maps, atlases, cruising guides and books looking for something, someplace, or someone. Perhaps I’m more lost then everyone put together. What if I never find what I’m looking for…, worse yet, what if I never started looking? I just think there is something better out there and “Damn It” I’m going to find it!

It’s not uncommon for a trip from the Galapagos to the Marquesas to take 45 – 60 days. The ITCZ (International Tropical Convergence Zone) is a band of windless water frequented by rain and lots of lightening. I have friends who attempted the trip last season and were hit by lightning before they reached the Galapagos, after turning around their engine seized on the way back to Panama. I will not have enough fuel to motor through the ITCZ and will just have to drift with the current and prey for wind. Hopefully I will make landfall on the island of Hivo Oa in the Marquesas (French Polynesia), time will tell.

How will 2 months alone at sea will affect me? Bonkers is the only word that comes to mind!!! This will most likely be the longest leg of my trip. I hope I catch a lot of fish : )

I guess we’ll all find out, I will start this trip in March. It is my plan to post daily logs at sea thanks to the help of Satcomm Systems and Iridium.

I guess it’s just one of those nights; I’m contemplating my navel again.

“Not all who wander are lost, perhaps I am”
