Splendid Boat Recipe #2: Make cheese in 10 minutes!

You’ll be surprised at how easy and quick this is! And the best thing is that you don’t need any fresh ingredients, it can be prepared at any time, even during a long passage after weeks of having left the land. Thanks Raffi for the tip : )

Ingredients:

* 3 cups of powdered milk

* 6 cups of water

* 1/2 cup of white vinegar

* whatever you want to add for flavor (salt, black pepper, some parmesan cheese, herbs, chilli powder, etc)

Procedure:

1)       Dissolve the milk in the water.

2)      Heat it up until it’s near the boiling point.

3)      Remove from fire and add the vinegar. Stir occassionally for about five minutes. You’ll see how the water separates from the cheese.

4)      Pour it into a sieve, ideally covered with cheese cloth or some kind of clean gause.

5)      Mix in the salt and spices (optional).

6)      If you did not use cloth just put the cheese from the sieve into a container and cool it in the fridge. You’ll get a kind of really nice ricotta.

7)      If you used cloth, remove it from the sieve and turn it so that you can form a kind of bag that is closed on the top. Put it in a clean sink and apply pressure on it (we usually put a big bowl on it and put diving weights in the bowl). After a few minutes the cheese will be compact.

8)      You can either bring it to the fridge as it is or you can cover it in cheese wax and let it sit for a couple of weeks for the flavor to be stronger.

9)      Enjoy!!

  2. Hi there Pete!

Thanks so much!! It’s the first time I write anything publicly so I’m still quite self-concious at times… We are finally going to sail in the next few days!! We’re off to the San Blas Islands, I’ve heard so many people say it’s paradise, their favourite place on earth.

But you know which I thought was the most beautiful place on Earth? Santorini. I tell you I was planning to stay in Greece for a week, but when I got there, I just couldn’t leave! It was back in 1999. I stayed for a month and I only left because I was planning to see most of Europe and Greece had been my first stop. I arrived and spent the whole of my first day at the beach and swimming in the water and I watched the sunset there, alone, lying on the sand. As the sun was going down, the whole town lit up, I could see all the white houses with their yellowy lamps outside, the white staircases going up and down. And the folk music started playing in the restaurants, and I could smell the wonderful healthy food. I looked towards the sea again, and I could see all these boats light up as well, moving slowly and then a gush of wind came and blew my hair back, making me close my eyes to take in all the beauty of Greek culture and nature. I cried. It was just too much, too wonderful, I was moved.

And then I went out that night, had a lovely salad and natural yoghurt with honey with a band playing live, then I walked the streets, had a drink in a little terrace and went to bed full of life.I met such amazing people there too. And you know what the funniest thing is, everybody thought I was Greek. They spoke Greek to me in the street, in the shops, and when I told them I was Argentinean-Croatian they were surprised. “Oh, I thought you were Greek. You look Greek”. Strange, in the rest of Europe people thought I was Italian all the time. Anyway, I have great memories of your country, and Alex and I have been talking about sailing there, Greece, Croatia, maybe we could go to the Ukraine as well (Alex’s family homeland). We’ll see…

Alex says you shouldn’t hit on his girlfriend though haha ; )

    Thanks again for sharing!

  3. I would never hit on Alex’s girlfriend. He’s larger than me in so many ways and would probably throw a tiger fish at me if I did!!!
Wow, what beautiful words about Greece. I’m so happy you had such a great time. Even though Santorini is way too commercial and expensive for me (I went 30yrs ago), it is an outstanding place. I’ld say “come on back” but all hell is breaking loose (financial crisis/bankruptcy yadayada). I’ll probably meet up with you guys sooner!

  4. Hey, it’s Carla from Alex’s user, sorry I took so long to reply, as you can imagine these days have been intense! I’ll write about it soon ; )

I could see that Santorini was pretty posh but I thought it was beautiful! And back then nothing in Greece was expensive, Drachmas were still around, I remember I ate for 1 dollar, if I had dessert it was 1.50! I stayed in Ios a couple of nights in a crazy complex on the beach with water slides and parties and I paid 4 dollars a night for a kind of dog house with a canvas roof and two little beds inside. I had a wooden door with a key so I was more than happy! It was really hard to leave Greece, I was spending little and having a great time. The ocean there is incredible too!

I was so sorry to hear about your problems! I also had an amazing couple of years in Ireland and they’ve been struggling as well. But you both have an amazing culture, incredible history and strong, proud citizens I’m sure you’ll figure it out and come back to the surface soon. I’m Argentinean so I’ve seen crises that’s for sure! But good things always come out of crises as well, you grow, you learn to appreciate what’s important… Hope it’s all over soon!

And hope we get to meet you too.

    Take care,
    C
