New friends & aquaponics

mikephotoSorry it took a while to get a new blog up but my laptop screen has totally gone the way of the doe-doe!

My guest (Mike) arrived and all I can say is we are having a blast. We stayed in a nice hotel and went out to the casino in Panama city. I took $20 and turned it into $100 at the roulette table. We really tied one on :(

I had friends over last night and we watched an instructional video on aquaponics, how frigg’n cool!!! Aquaponics is a growing system where you grow fresh-water fish like tilapia and a garden at the same time. Its a closed system where all the water is recycled. The fish waste feeds the garden, cleans the water, and returns it to the fish tank. The nutrients from the fish waste produce AMAZING vegetables. It’s a really nice system of growing especially if your in an urban area, or have a yard with little space. With a 1000 liter system you can keep your family in organic veggies and fish for little money, priceless! The system is cheap to build as well. I love practical things that add to a better quality of life.

We are off to San Blas in the next few days. The weather has been wonky but “normal” for this time of year.

Carla’s back soon and will meet up with us in San Blas.

I know a lot of you guys are getting to the coldest part of winter. If anyone is interested to come for a week let me know. I have a number of things that need to come here from the states and will make some good deals on charter-time.

Cheers from paradise.

  1. Alex,

Funny that you have brought up aquaponics.

I have been reading your website and buying your DVD’s for seems like
    ten years.

I have been obsessed over aquaponics for two weeks now. I bought four
used food quality 250 gallon IBC’s and turned them into one tank and three
growing tanks. I am having fun putiing it all together and hope to have it operational soon.

I thought it was funny that you brought that up. I think it will spread like wildfire
    all over the world.

  4. I’ve been into aquaponics for about 10 years, first learning of it at all place as EPCOT in DisneyWorld. They have a a tour, one public and a longer hands on private tour, of their extensive aquaponics and hydroponics systems for growing food for the parks restaurants. Disney was big into aquaponics as the agriculture method of the future.
I have about 4 hours of video of the private tour, it was fascinating. I was surprised then and now its not knowledge that is widely known.
Up here in Seattle its taking off more just recently, I have two stores focused solely on aquaponics near where I live.
Anyway, great to hear you brought it up. Currently it supplies about 25% of my families food. Another 25% from other permaculture methods.
Been wanting to try it on our sailboat!!! :)
    Cheers!

  5. I’ve thought alot about aquaponics on the boat but running the water pump 24/7/365 isint an option for me.
