Bucket list

sailsplendid

Well the artwork isn’t done but I spent a few hours putting together a flyer for “Splendid sailing”. I will put it up at various youth hostels and hotels. Every referral gets $25.00 a head, I’m sure I’ll do fine. I’m not so happy with the shape colors yet but you get the general idea. There are so many inferior boats/captains charging $225 PP/PD, I figure this is pretty reasonable. I may increase my rates after I’m all painted up, maybe not? I’m sure I’ll be successful as I don’t really want to work too hard anyway.

Speaking of charters. I only sold like 5 charter donations and am having the drawing in May. If you want to get your name in the hat visit the store and throw down $50.00 :) if you win I’m sure you’ll find it worth every penny.

I’ve been working on my “bucket” list and I’m surprised how reasonable it all is. I want to finish Splendid and sail the ship I see in my mind till the end of my days. I also want to become the minimalist sailor I see in my head. I want to live as much as possible on my own wine, bread, cheese, tofu, beer, and become a master spear fisherman, canner, and dryer. I wish to spend the rest of my life living simple, consuming little, and being healthy and happy as I travel the world.

I’d like to continue to produce my films and release my book. I’d like to play my guitar better and find more peace in my heart. I’m on the fence about having a child. I want a child, I just don’t know about a wife, she would have to be a pretty unique person and I’m so picky I’m basically writing the whole concept off.

I want to explore (sail) Asia, India, Africa, and eastern South America. This would conclude a circumnavigation however its not the point anymore.

I’d like to sit down and have a beer with Guin when she grows up. I’ve finally let go of Sam in my heart but I really bonded with Guin as a parent and really felt a responsibility for her future. Unfortunately I have no say in it anymore and that’s how the cookie crumbles.

I don’t think my goals are unreasonable or unobtainable for a 45 year old guy in my position?

If someone is interested in spending time on Splendid in exchange for work give me a shout. If your willing to put a real 25 hours a week into Splendid (not sitting around B.S.ing) and can sand let me know. I might have a month in the San Blas for you. I’d teach you about sailing and cruising but would expect some real elbow grease in return. I’d even feed you but you would have to come armed with a orbital sander and a healthy amount of paper for it.

The Isla Linton anchorage is my favorite anchorage in the world that I know of and conceder it home. I’m right where i want to be at the moment and I’m happy to be here finishing up Splendid. I know a lot of you want me to get moving but I’m really happy for the moment. I can make money here if I need to, there are no hurricanes, and the government stays out of my business. I can spear fish, I’m 40 miles away from the most beautiful place in the world, and can be in the city in 4 hours. Life is good.

I’m looking forward to crossing the Pacific next year. I’d like to have the creative tools (camera package) I want and have my ship dialed where I want her. You know at the end of the day I do what I want when I open my eyes in the morning and that’s all that counts.

I don’t know if I’ve saturated my market or the economy has taken its toll, but BlueSphere doesn’t bring in so much anymore. I used to sell DVD’s pretty much every day, now I’m lucky to have 5-10 (film) downloads a month. The paid episodes are good for about 30 – 50 sales but if you do the math its hard to make it work. Especially when you have a boat to finish restoring and an expensive camera package to buy. I want to get a Canon T2i with 2 extra lenses (telephoto, wide, plus the 50mm it comes with) an underwater housing with lights, and plenty of memory cards. I really want the next film to be special. In my case the sequels will get better and better :) If your interested in being a producer (charters included) let me know.

I enjoyed all the traffic on the last blog. I got really stressed out dealing with the IRS and hope not to have to deal with them again. I know someone just told me that since I use paypal, I’m part of the system and need to pay taxes. If I legally make enough to pay taxes I’m all about it, I just don’t make enough, not do I want to. I’m the most successful poor person I know and pretty happy here :)

Peace, Love, and freedom.

Sail far, live slowly, and live every day as you wish.

  1. Hey Alex!
I want to let you know how much fun Destiny and I had on Splendid. We were so thankful that we found a captain who is cool, honest, fun, safe and chill. By the time we got back to Costa, Destiny was like, “I want to get back on a boat.” I don’t think the sea sickness could hold her down. I look forward to traveling with you again some time in the future…Galapagos? I’ll send you some pictures soon once I get them up somewhere. I’m back in Cali now and it snowed 2 feet at my house the day I got home….Thanks again bud.
    Sam

  2. Sam,
I had such an awsome time with you guys, really. I’ll be posting some video soon and will send you a link. You are allways welcome on Splendid :) If you can send me an email so I have your address. its alexdorsey a t gmail.

Its a shame we had to come back the day we did as the sea was up and the other couple really had a bug to get back on that very day. It would have been fun to spend more time out there and Dest would not have felt sea sick on the return trip.

    Cheers

  3. Well guys, good news. If you want to watch my films for free you can download them at:

    thepiratebay.org/torrent/5105314/Project_Bluesphere_dvd1.avi

This is to the guy (uau5)that upload my films to a torrent site. Man, I feel really sorry for you that you are such a small person you felt the need to steal, well not even steal, but destroy my primary source of income because you are a miserable little person stuck in your tiny little world and cant take responsibility for your own future, its quite sad. You see there will always be little men like you and guys like me. The truth is you could never hurt me because your that little guy and I’m…, well the man that I am.

Why don’t you upload my paid episodes as well? I’ll even let my people know where they can watch them for free :)

    Sticks & stones!

I will continue to be free with a smile on my face, and you will not, that is the reality of it all :)

  4. Alex,

I just read your last blog and some times i think, how can there be such low life garbage in the world, that tries to take away a man’s primary source of income? Unfortunatly that is reality.
I do know however that their are two types of people that follow your blog. Some people get what you are doing and others just don’t care and use you for their own entertainment.
The people that get you and what you are doing would never down load your livelihood for free. They understand and admire what you do. They are on a different level then most and dream of the day that they can be self sufficient and can truly live out their dreams. Maybe not the same dream of sailing and living free but fulfilling their purpose on this earth. Those people would never even think of stealing from you.

Then there are the others. The people that don’t care. The people that just don’t get it. People like this person who for what ever reason are lost, sick and unimportant. Those type of people are the ones that others need to pray for. Those are the people that have no dreams and live life through their evil ways.

I don’t think this will hurt you really. Those that follow you get you. The others … well they never would have paid for a down load or an amazing documentry in the first place.

  5. for the raffle, do you know about how much a plane ticket would be out of miami to where you are at?

  6. Hi Alex,

Well, the day finally came last Saturday and i’m living off the HOOK !!!!!!!!!

  7. Good Morning:

Just in from a 3 day charter and sippin’ coffee with that nice afterglow. I’ve been lurkin’ and reading your past posts about the IRS and Video Pirates. Well now, you have to have days like these so you have something to compare with. You just don’t know when you have great days until you have to deal with guys like that.

Weather up here has been great. Winds have been light though. Sailing’s been good and life is gentle. Bottom job coming up. New head going in. Projects continue. I put together a priority list and by the time I get to it it changes. She’s a great vessel, but she’s still a boat.

Really glad to hear that you are happy and settling in to get things done and know inside you need to play music and get centered. Those are big projects too, but pick up that guitar and sing. Works for me.

I’ll drop you an email and catch you up and I’ve got a couple of thoughts that don’t need to be here.

Thanks for letting me be a sponsor this project and let’s continue to follow our dreams.

  8. Curtis,

I have a pretty good idea who did it. They actually ripped the DVD and by the upload date on Pirate bay the people on my list are pretty limited, it wasn’t so long after I finished the second DVD. As I said, the guy will always be a looser.

    Ross,

Your one of the few people that has made Project BlueSphere so worth it for me and I’m really happy and proud for you.

Ross was the guy waiting on the dock for me in Australia and took care of me the whole time I was there. He gave me a bed to sleep in after I moved off of Namaste and has become a good friend over the years.

You go buddy, don’t stay anchored in one place too long :)

    Capt Paul.
I’ll ring you, we should catch up. I’m glad the new boat is working out well. Beats a hunter eah? I loved my hunter when I had in in Cali, just wasn’t a solid cruising boat.

If anyone wants to charter in Florida I personally guarantee you’ll have a great time with Captain Paul. He is really a positive person and will show you the time of your life. If you want to check out his website click on the Fantaseasailing logo on the left side of the page.

On another note I was accosted by a large group of friends last night. My friend Eric came over with his family, a bunch of friends, and his sister that was visiting from Germany. His sister just lost her 14 year old son a few weeks ago. He stepped out of a bus in Germany and was killed by a passing car. I’ve been up most of the night with thoughts of this running through my head. Life can be such a tragedy, WE MUST LIVE THE LIFE WE DREAM OF, WE MUST! Life is so short, delicate, and precious. We must not spend it in front of the idiot box, working at a job that doesn’t better ourselves or mankind, or waste it in the pursuit of money or security. We must shed our fears and walk into the world naked of fear and take each day head on with our chin high.

I may go to the San Blas in a few days. Eric’s boat is too small to bring the whole family and Ali (bearded welder in my last film) and Eric’s dads boat is on the other side of the canal. His sister is only here for another 10 days and the family would like to show her the San Blas. Not a charter, but a good opportunity to be around some really good people.

In the end the IRS, even if they lock me away in a cell one day, video pirates, or real pirates just cant touch me. Freedom lives in the deepest and darkest crevasses of my soul and is something no one can take away from me. If I was to be on my last breath tomorrow I’ve filled enough of my bucket list that I would pass this earth with a really large $hit eating grin on my face, “Thanks for the ride”.

Speaking of rides one of the tings I would like to add to my bucket list is exploring more inland places I visit via motorcycle. Eric’s wife has a 500cc Yamaha Virago for sale. It’s out of my price range but I may try and go for it after my next charter. I would like to road trip Panama and Costa Rica. I could put the bike on my deck and sail to Colombia for my haul out and ride South from Colombia. Did you guys ever read/watch the motorcycle diarys?

Its a beautiful day and I’m making it my personal responsibility to kill a fish today, what will you do?

    – Alex

  9. Clean a dirty boat. Pull the laundry out of two staterooms and do it. Mop and dust. Re-do the rooms. Put my feet up and update my blog, FaceBook, Twitter accounts and have a beer. Ok, two beers.

    Life truly is good.

    Capt. Paul

  10. Oh, and as far as tickets to Panama check Spirit. They have $99.00 tickets each way from Ft Lauderdale a few times a week. You have to hunt around but generally speaking it is really cheap to fly to Panama.

I’ve only sold 8 tickets to date so your chances of winnin g the raffle are pretty hi. I didnt sell all of the potential tickets last time either so a few bucks for me = good, cheap chances for a charter for you = good. I think everyone is happy :)

    Cheers.

  11. Alex,
I’ll keep paying for your vids…and i’m sure others will too. What you are providing is valuable and I vote with my limited bucks.
I spent 5 years restoring a 30 yr old boat and have 3 well worn orbitals to prove it. I would love to work with you, but am currently in a nursing program so it isn’t in the cards immediately. I’ll look you up later to see if you still need help.
A tip about your dive compressor. Make doubly certain that you keep ANY combustion exhaust well away from the compressor intake. A little carbon monoxide on the surface is bad enough, but the deeper you dive, the greater the partial pressure of the gas. This can result in CO toxicity at depth. I can get you reference data if you want. I have an extensive diving background to draw from.
Thanks again for sharing your life.
    Mike

My google search brought up $255 for round trip tickets on American Airlines or Copa Airlines from Miami to Panama City. For myself, Seattle to Panama City is $415 a round trip ticket. Do not forget the tax though when you build your budget.

My income tax money comes in this week. Time for me to buy my ticket. Though I would come work on Splendid and pay for the privilege. I know the knowledge I would gain would be worth the price.

  13. Does Ross have a Blog? It would be neat to read about someone living off the hook in that part of the world.

  14. …PEOPLE WHO STEAL ON THE INTERNET SHOULD BE HUNG BY THE NECK…..HOMELAND SECURITY JUST CLOSED SEVERAL SITES FOR BROADCASTING LIVE SPORTS..THAT’S WHAT 911 HAS COME TO……I GUESS THE NBA HAS MORE PULL THAN YOU…G

  18. Do I have any friends out there with a printing shop?

  19. I’d like to open a discussion about Zeitgeist if anyone has watched it.

    http://www.zeitgeistthefilm.com/

I believe some of the dots are hard to connect in the end, but has some real info for sure.

  20. Alex, As you know I work for DHS and I believe 100% of all three of the movies. I am sorry but the writing is just on the wall.

  21. Isn’t that the Department of Home Land Security? Maybe you shouldn’t say such things, you might get in trouble?

I want people to watch this film. Here is the link to watch the first one online for free:

    http://www.zeitgeistthefilm.com/

No matter what you believe we need to start talking about what is happening. I belive we still have the freedom to speak?

  22. I’ve watched all 3 films last weekend and I must say it changed my whole perspective. I think every human being should see them all.

  23. I am in the process of doig something major, i will announce it soon. I’m suprised more people are not talking about it?

  24. Now you have me intrigued. Look forward to hearing more.

I have seen the first two zeitgeist films. Very well done. Interesting the people who you recommend that too, and the reaction. So many people in the US, so instantly cry “conspiracy theory” and discount everytihng in it. Reminds me of the support our troops people, that endlessly support any war the US wages for any reason. “freedom is not free” ideals. You can support our troops, by not supporting war or a particular war.
People walk around blindlessly, accepting all that is told them by nedia, so much is true and worth thinking about in those films.

“None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

  25. Hey Alex I noticed a few weeks ago that you had made it to the torrent community I meant to tell you but because there we no seeders I figured no one could download them anyway. As a photographer it is always interesting to see where your work ends up and who is profiting from your creativity and work. But I cant focus on it too much otherwise I would have to start looking into a different profession. I must admit I sometimes use Justin TV to watch college football but it is because i live in Canada and cant get the games I want to watch and I was completely shocked when the department of homeland security shut down the Florida State game I was watching. You just wouldn’t expect that the agency that was responsible for keeping America safe from foreign invaders would be wasting their time. I guess it is like my friend Doug always says follow the money!
