Without risk there would be no reward and if it was easy everyone would cruise.
Whenever I hear of a boat going down it strikes a somber chord in my heart.
One boat, a Hans Christian, was lost during the Galapagos to Marquesas run this year. The captain and crew were rescued by a nearby freighter. Last night a sailboat went down coming through the cut into the Ahi Atoll. I believe this is a direct result of bad judgment on the part of the captain. One should not enter a tricky and dangerous atoll at night no matter what the sea conditions. Safety is off shore! I don’t know the particulars but I know they were holed in the cut (entering at night) and sank shortly there after. I’m sure he was trying to navigate by his GPS as there was no moon.
I spoke to the local police officer today about my difficult time entering the lagoon. He informed me in such windy conditions the sea pours a lot of extra water into the lagoon and the wind quickly pushes it out “Very dangerous conditions, no slack, your lucky” he informed me.
I’ll be waiting for a good window to exit the lagoon. I’ll be looking for a mid-day hi tide with sunny conditions and no wind.
Anyway, enough of that.
