It was a slow morning today. I woke up a few times in the night to thunder, lightening, and rain hammering Splendid’s decks.
I love the squally weather, I always have. In the height of the worst squalls and lightening I stand on the foredeck and let the cold rain sting my bare skin, it makes me feel alive. People say I’m “crazy” for swimming in the lightening and rain but I just Love it!
Carla is in the states for a week. I always do my deepest thinking and creativity when I am alone, and once again I’ve put my life under a microscope. I must say I’m truly happy, although most likely the financially poorest person you know over the age of 20. It’s ironic that I was a “financial advisor” at one point in my life?
I’ve recently read on Facebook that a number of my friends are struggling with finding work, finance, and happiness. It was this I found myself thinking of as the rain stung my skin this morning and the wind pulled at my hair. Thank God I don’t have to go to an office!
I know what it is to struggle with money and happiness and although I occasionally want more to finish Splendid and travel, I’d never let it interfere with the joy and freedom I hold in my heart.
However that transition was a difficult one. Only my closest friends know the deep, deep, deep despair that consumed me in my former life and nearly ended it.
What would you say if I told you the matrix has ahold of you? You’d say I was a nut right, “Alex doesn’t live in “reality”, perhaps?
But it is just that, the system has you. The system makes you pay (time/work) on your home, your income, the food you consume, and the water you drink.
In my very humble opinion these are human rights that are granted to us by nature (God if you prefer). Shelter, food, and water are not things to be taxed by anyone, and when a society insists on it perhaps its time to tear it down and start over?
More importantly the system shapes our values, our sense of right & wrong, and demands most of our freedom (time). What kind of world is it that we live in when our society dictates what time we get up, when we eat or make love, and when we are able to rest?
At what point do we say “NOT ONE MORE DAY”? The truth is most of us (Americans) still have a choice although perhaps a difficult one.
Philosophy is the key, however one can not philosophize without time. You must make the time. Occupying the little free time many of you have with devices and television is the biggest mistake. We all need time to think about our lives so we can develop a plan to better them.
Building your own life-philosophy is paramount to success. And when I say success it has nothing to do with how much you make an hour, have in the bank, or how shiny your car is.
I know it sounds corny but Love is the only measurement of success, and the goal that should be at the end of everything we do.
I truly hope all my friends find what they are looking for.
Anyway, these are my rambling thoughts this grey and stormy day.
Peace.
Alex

Good insight on life!
This post is just what I needed today. Thanks Alex!
Alex, long time my friend. Loved the post. Much of what you said reminded me of the Stoic philosophy. If you have not read Seneca and Epicurus, you owe it to yourself. Seneca is my intellectual hero … his ideas have survived for thousands of years and the philosophy he ascribed to closely parallels that of your own. Here’s a few gems …
“Nothing, to my way of thinking, is a better proof of a well ordered mind than a mans ability to stop just where he is and pass some time in his own company”. – Seneca
“Always bustling about is not industry–it is only the restless energy of a haunted mind.”–Seneca
“Any man who does not think what he has is more than ample, is an unhappy man, even if he is the master of the whole world. Only the wise man is content with what is his. All foolishness suffers the burden of dissatisfaction with itself.” –Epicurus
“A cheerful poverty is an honourable state. But if it is cheerful it is not poverty at all. Any man who does not think what he has is more than ample, is an unhappy man, even if he is the master of the whole world.” –Epicurus
Vintage Dorsey! Must be the solitude?
Epicurus and Seneca, must add on to my reading list
Indeed. Alex is a modern day philosopher. These are true words of wisdom that have helped me through the last couple of days.
We all need to be “philosophers”!
I’m amazed that philosophy is not a supporting concept in “school”, or a prerequisite to a college degree? I try to tell my friends who say “I just need to get my kid through school before I can take off” to realize that school does not necessarily go hand in hand with education or learning.
Less, is far more.
Contrarian, it’s good to see you around :) been a while.
Sharne, solitude is a place I like to visit. One of the reasons Carla is such a good wife. I get space to think, no drama, trust, and love :)
Life experience and a few doses of pain and heartache are prerequisite subjects for philosophy. Not too many of school or collage age will have the prerequisites for philosophy 101.

Sharne,
Hinduism is the oldest, and 3rd largest “religion” in the world. It’s more of a life-phisophy as there is no one “God”, but teaches philosophy from birth, I like it!
Contrarian,
Carla just got a kindle and I asked her do download Seneca for me :)
Sounds like my kind of guy.
It is nice to see the blog full of comments. Alex you are the man! If you need something in P City let me know. Looking at 4runners, and hope to buy one within a couple of days.
I just flew Copa to Panama. They made me buy a ticket out of Panama before giving me a boarding pass. Immigration agreed I did not need a ticket and Copa did not refund my refundable tickets completely. The kept $112. American Express opened a dispute and reversed the charge. Copa told me 3 times I was getting a 100% refund.
Spirit air flies Miami to Panama for $100 each way if you book 10 days ahead. Copa is $300 plus. If you are visiting Alex and Carla, look into Spirit airlines.

Alex – here’s the book you want http://www.amazon.com/dp/0140442103/ref=wl_mb_recs_1_title
Seneca will resonate with you. The most interesting revelation I had in reading Seneca is how little people have changed in the last 2000 years. We suffer all the same insecurities, foibles, fears, and failings as people did at the time Rome ruled the world. For example …
Seneca admonished those who spent money they didn’t have to buy crap that they didn’t need, warned against trying to “keep up with the joneses”, taught how to be quiet and contemplative, deal with death and dying, handle “modern day” stress, manage wealth and privilege, embrace simplicity, poverty and absence, avoid the crowd and the dangers of following/thinking with the mob, etc, etc. Seneca would have loved the movie the Matrix :)
It is simply the best “self help” book you will ever read.
Enjoy!
Contrarian,
Carla downloaded Seneca for me on the kindle. I’ll have time for reading on my delivery up to Nicaragua :)
Do you think he wouldnt be able to understand you without the latin accent? :-) LOL!!!!!

maybe that new auto pilot did not work as well as he hoped!
As far as I can tell he was delivering a yacht to Niaragua on or about the 23rd of June, that trip would not have taken this long, his last video said, the next videos will be of me and the canal and out to sea, concerned?
I’m sure he’ll be back soon, could be the delivery trip took way longer than expected or maybe internet problems!
Positive thoughts!
Mike
I know you reading this Alex Dorkey! You very tricky!

Sorry guys, I got really wrapped up in this delivery. The cutlass was bad, the stern tube/packing gland was busted, the manual bilge pump was busted, along with a bunch of other stuff. Really was a tough job, I back now and will get a blog up soon :(
