Finally a cool sailing T

zzzz  Well after 8 years I finally came up with a t-shirt concept. I don’t know about you but personally I think it’s the coolest sailing t-shirt ever!

The Chinese character for wind is featured on the back right shoulder, I.E. keep zzthe wind at your back,  and the Chinese Character for courage rests over your heart with the slogan “Sail far and live slowly” printed beneath. The objective being, if you dream about sailing far and living slowly you will keep the wind at your back and courage in your heart.

I’ve never released a t-shirt because I’m not so into “commercializing” things, but my hopes are that if you are of a similar mindset and dreams the shirt will act as an active reminder to keep your aspirations and objectives alive, as well as being a z really cool t-shirt with good karma. Splendid was commissioned and built in Hong Kong (1973), hence the Chinese symbols that will also be painted on Splendid’s hull.zzz

I’ve priced the T’s so I make $10 a shirt; the prices for the shirts are $22.00. The shirts are all cotton, good quality, silk screened, and only available in black. Might be a good idea for stocking stuffers this year?

If you are interested to buy one please visit the store

20111016_0351 Aside from launching a t-shirt I’ve really been busting my ass on this battery box. It was…, as usual…, a lot more work than I had thought. I built it strong enough to take a knock down or roll and built a tray to catch any acid so it won’t end up in the bilge if a battery ruptures.

I had to experiment a bit with epoxy & 20111015_0348 hardeners. I had about 3 gallons of epoxy that the hardened went bad on.  The resin is fine. After some testing I got it to where it works perfect with the hardener I can get here. The only real difference is I’m mixing 4:1, as opposed to 5:1.

20111010_0344 As you can see from my catch I’m back to shooting fish every day. I ate my first lionfish (poisonous spines), you can see him on the right side. Lionfish have become a big problem in the Caribbean as they are not indigenous and incredibly invasive, they are killing all the other reef fish. If you’re interested in Lionfish hunting, facts, or recipes, please check out http://www.lionfishhunter.com

I also couldn’t pass up buying a used Yamaha 9.9 enduro outboard for parts ($60). The magnets on this motor gave way and chewed everything up in the flywheel. I actually found a guy parting one out in the states and if I can swing it will buy all the parts I need to fix this one ($200). If I fix it I’d probably sell it as I could get $900.00 – $1000.20111010_0343

A friend came over the other night. I mentioned how long painting is taking and he reminded me I wasn’t painting but doing a 100% refit in a remote location, with very little money, no help, during rainy season, and that I was doing everything the “right” way. It made me feel better. If I look at it that way I’m flying through the work! It’s true. Ever piece of hardware, chain plate, or through deck fitting I come across in my painting area gets removed, over drilled, filled with epoxy, and re-bedded. It’s far from just painting. The price of my refit far exceeds the purchase price of the boat. I could not imagine how much it would cost to hire people to do this task for me.

Oh, when she is done I’ll be sailing far !!!

20111017_0352 So a really interesting cruising boat rowed into the anchorage yesterday, yes rowed. Not with a sculling oar, I’ve seen plenty of small boats use a sculling oar from the stern. This is a 21’ “cruising” & rowing boat. They built the cabin onto it and sailed it here from Florida. They are on their way to Colombia and beyond. After they rowed in and dropped the anchor they pulled up the masts and stored them. They have a few projects to do and I offered them the use of any of my 20111017_0356tools. As I’ve said 100 times, it’s not about the cost of the boat. Personally I wouldn’t cross an ocean in such a boat but coastal cruising like they are doing, why not?

Check out this little boat kit ($3,331.00) from Chesapeake Light craft. :

I think building a small boat like this would be an inexpensive, good, fun way to get into sailing. When I can afford it I’m going to build the Chesapeake light craft passage maker take apart and use it as my primary dink.

xI’ve also come to a conclusion on boat countertops. What is light (not marble), durable, attractive, and relatively cost effective? stainless  steel. The only drawback to stainless counter tops is it scratches. Well the more I thought about it I decided to do stainless counters (at a later date) regardless of the fact it scratches. Well it finally dawned on me, why not jewel (engine turn) the stainless? No more worrying about minor scratching and I think it looks awesome! I’m going to learn how to do this and master it! It’s good to have mad skills.

If you’re interested in engine turning you can learn more at:

Well that’s it for today guys.

Time to hunt lionfish and attend to Splendid’s refit.

Sail far and live slowly.

  1. Well it was one of those days yesterday. I dont know how many of you have ever worked with fibraglass but I’ve been itching/burning for 3 days. Fiberglass can have long, ultra thin needle like shards before you sand it. First thing off yesterday I got about an inch of one wedged under my knuckle on my left hand and one of my fingers is blown up like a balloon. I think it’s still in there. The good news is the battery box is done. It was a bit tricky as i had to build it in the cabinet. After finishing I got in my dinghy and it’s stuck in reverse, must be the transmission, ARRRG.

My question is, did I buy the parts outboard because my tyranny was about to go, or did it go because I bought the outboard for parts?

The worst part is one of my oars broke a month or so ago and I never got around to fixing it. I hitched a ride to shore and got my dugout, had dinner, and paddled back. I’m really looking forward to having a proper rowing and sailing dinghy. I’m sure I’ll have a 2, or 4hp kicker for long rides to shore but it will be backup propulsion only.

The good thing is the days I’m in a bad mood are far and few in-between these days.

The guys on the small boat came by yesterday before they took off to have a chat about the area. WOW, is that a small “cruising” boat. They seem to be having a GR8 time, and at the end of the day that is all that matters!!!

The sun is shining for the first time in a week, and I’m about to go for my post coffee swim.

    Cheers

  2. Alex, I’d bet the Lionfish was the best tasting out of that group you shot ! We had Lionfish while visiting the Bahamas earlier this year…. tasted like chicken !

  3. Tee shirts great idea. I had my wife get one from your store today. I’ll ware it proudly sailing.
Yes I have used fiber glass a lot, I know what you mean. Right now the inside of my boat is filled with glass dust.
I have used glass so much infact I have gotton use to the itching or at least kind of use to it.
    But its gread stuff.

  4. Does anyone have a spindrift sailing tender, and might be able to open a discussion on its performance?

  5. Great t-shirts Alex. Definitely on the “gotta get now” list.
As for dinghies, have you seen these?

Really cheap to build and great for just kicking around. Kinda like a temp solution but not for much more, especially not for a life raft substitute. One guy used transparent Dacron and can see thru the bottom! Also you could probably beef it up with plywood. Just a thought.
Sorry bought the outboard…. sounds like ol’ Murphy’s kicking around.
    Cheers

  6. Hi Alex,

Just took a Hunter 45 down the McClellan/Kerr navigational system from Tulsa Oklahoma to New Orleans. What an adventure. We will leave next week for Ft Lauderdale. We will spend some time in the Tortugas. I made a log of it on spotadventures.com. the adventure is ‘MFawcett’. The title once you find it is ‘Jerry, Mike and Jeff’s river adventure’. I posted from day #4 as Cabin Boy Jeff. It’s kind of funny and we had the —- scared out of us. Were having the mast put on this week while we all attend to some business and will be off next week. Take care Alex.

  7. Peachtree, really cool dinks. I dont think the design is for me but I really love seeing such talent and ingenuity.

Jeff, good luck bro, have a blast!!!!!!!

  8. Hey Alex,
glad you aren’t letting the bastards grind you down. I’m currently on a delivery and waiting for an engine part before i hightail it north from Boot Key Harbor to the Venice area. Hurricane Rina is threatening my sanity, but I figure that cold front will keep it south long enough for me to get away unscathed. Very precarious precipice on which I currently hang, but it is what it is, right?
I like the shirt. I’ll have to grab one from you when I head down that way this season (provided that you’re still there). I’ll have to hit you up for some local knowledge either way, as where you’re at sounds like a place I’d like to hang out for a bit and hunt fishies.

I just procured a Trinka 8′, and absolutely love it. I’ve said goodbye to the world of deflatable boats and outboard motors, and with it, the ability to go ashore any time I feel like. I’m good with it though. The Trinka is a pleasure to row, and if I choose, will motor just fine with a 2hp. Go rigid!

Anyway. I have Cuban coffee to consume in excess.
Glad to hear you’re gettin’ Splendid done, and if you’re still around when I get down there, I’ll give you a hand.

  9. Darrin,
good to hear from you bro. I have a question , what did you do with your other 2 boats. I have a French friend here who has been working on his boat for 2 years. He had a big send off party last week and went to the san blas. He hit a reef and sunk hs boat with a brand new yanmar the first night out at 3am. Needless to say he’s devastated, broke and, homeless now. I’m trying to find him a cheapie/freebie.

He did a dumb thing trying to navigate a reef in a good swell on a moonless night and paid the price. he just needed to wait 3 hours for light, bummer. No matter how tired you are you need to head back out in that situation.

  10. Alex,
I keep checking your location on SPOT, but you must not we sending any SPOTs out… We are in Portabello, leaving for Colon this am… My dad decided to put the boat on the hard for the winter. We are heading back to the states to earn some sailing chips. :)
    where are you dude??????

  12. Hi Alex, I came upon your website a couple of days ago after finding an add on craigslist in the sailboat section directing me here. Wow. I really dig your videos and your lifestyle. I live up here in the Puget Sound area in Washington. I am going to community college, and getting pretty restless. I have been patroling craigslist sailboats seriously for about a month. Kind of getting a feel for what kind of boat I can afford , and what kind of price range the type of boat I want is going for in this area. I am hoping to find a 30 foot sailboat that I can sail and prepare over the next few years, before setting out for the deep blue ocean. One thing that I like about boating is just how plentifull the ocean is, and how free it can make you feel. I would like to feel a bit more free than I do, especially with all of the crazy socio-economic crap happening. You have a inspiring story. Also I wanted to know if you ever got your cannon 3ti camera. If so, does it work as well as you hoped?
    Keep us posted, Isaac

  13. Isaac3…..welcome aboard. I live in Olympia. In Feb or Mar I too will be looking for a boat. Good luck in your search. Maybe we can get together once I get home from this trip.

Yes, Alex has an enviable lifestyle….several of us on this website are working toward that goal.

  14. Chuck, I have another friend up in Alaska looking for a boat in your area, maybe the 3 of you should get together on ideas.

Isaac, I did get the T3i and really love it, I’ve already started production on my next film. I got an external timer yesterday and going to try my first timelapse shot of a sunset & clouds if all goes well with the weather tonight.. Welcome my friend. Please feel free to ask questions here, we are a large community of like minded individuals and many people including myself are eager to help someone getting started out.

    Cheers.

  15. Alex, Here is a question for you? I too am slowly working towards purchasing my blue water cruiser and sailing south. I have already started to pay off debt and should be debt free in about 12 months. My question is should i get another loan and purchase a boat move on board and have it payed for in 24 months or should i continue to pay rent at $1000 per month and wait until i have saved enough money to buy a boat loan free? I know how you feel about credit but do you think there is an exception in this case?
    Curtis

  16. Hi all! I have decided to finish some projects here on land that are keeping me bogged down. First on the list is finishing my 10′ livingston. I got it from a neighbor when he moved and have since then had it titled, and replaced the rotted transom, along with some extra glass work. I want to paint it so it will look nice, and so that someone might buy it. Question; I have a paint gun, should I spray it, or roll it? Can I spray epoxy paint through my gun? If I spray it what type of thinner should I keep handy to clean my spray gun out with? I want to use an epoxy resin paint so that it will have that self leveling shine of fresh glass resin wax. Since I dont have much experience in finishing glass work, does any ideas or advise? Brand or method? Thanks Isaac.

  17. curtis, I’m the frst one to say never take credit but rent is really a waste of money. If I could focus my money towards a boat vrs leting it dissapatye into the universe every month i would do it.

Isaac, i dont think you can spray epoxy paint (thick)? use a 2 part poly (for car is fine) since it is for sale make it as nice of a finish as you can.

  18. I have a stainless steel galley aboard Starquest and it is really wonderful. The sink is welded seamlessly into the counter-top, the icebox lid sticks up a bit and has a big cutting-board surface on it to minimize the scratches to the counter top- something found on damned near every boat anyway.

Visiting my “website” will bring you to the Facebook photo album for my boat. The only thing I’d change is a deeper sink, which may happen eventually…

  19. Also- Curtis- you can find people willing to owner-finance for you. Especially at $1000/month! I bought my boat for $12,500, owner-financed at $250/month. This put an extra $750/month in the owners pocket as he kept it at a dock. About a year later he told me that if I could pay off his loan on the boat all at once he would let me have it for that amount. I got a $5,000 loan from my bank and paid it off, so the purchase price came down to only $9,000!

Click on my name to go to the FB Album for the boat. It’s a 1974 Cal Cruising 35 with all the bells and whistles!

  20. hey hey, sorry. i forgot about this post.
my Alberg was sold a month or so ago, and i’m giving the islander to a local guy in stuart before i leave for cuba and guatemala.

sorry to hear about your friend’s misfortune. but yeah.. dark plus reefs is usually a heave to and wait situation in my mind. land scares me more than water.
