Well I got some fairing compound on the boat early in the morning yesterday then the clouds arrived. I worried about rain but it never came. I’m going to have to contend with the weather a lot over the coming months, I know I must be patient and not loose focus. I have plenty of indoor, as well as outdoor projects and just need to keep busy.
I spent most of the day on the computer making a flyer & business card (Photoshop), you can click on them to make them larger. Please give me input before I print them. I like the flyer but need to find a better picture of myself, I kind of look like a retard in that picture.
Getting ready to cross an ocean again is a big project but one I can make happen if I balance making money with charters, spending money on by beautiful girl and working my ass of her, while trying to save a few bucks for the canal and my journey. I don’t want to get caught like so many people here that are content sailing the Caribbean, chartering, growing old, and drinking too much rum. I want to explore the world and document my journey. Printing the flyer and business card give me a feeling of permanency I don’t like. I don’t want roots here, or anywhere for that matter, even though this is one of my favorite places in the world.
I should be getting my new flip video camera this week. I’ll get a video up fast, it will be good to have a camera again. The flip will be good for internet video however I really want to start shooting my next film and the flip wont cut it. I’m looking at www.kickstarter.com as a source to raise a few bucks for my camera package & film project. They raise money for independent projects and it may be a good avenue for me. I spent so many years in my younger days raising money for indie-film projects I should be able to pull it off. I put a widget on the right side of the screen to see if I can raise the money in-house first. If you want to see the camera package I’m looking at I have put it together at B&H photo. I’m going to release my next film with my e-book (Autonomy at sea, a free man’s guide to the world). I think it is going to be really cool, but a totally different experience than my first two films. Its going to be about the nuts & bolts of living a minimalist life at sea. Not only sailing, but boat choice, as well as independent thinking (making wine, pasta, bread, tofu, cheese, etc.), and self-sufficiency on the boat working with metal, fiberglass, wood, rigging, diesels, and paints. I think I can get Splendid sorted out in the next 10 months but I know I wont be able to pull off and afford the camera package I want by next March.
I’m really, REALLY excited about getting my scuba/pneumatic tool set up completed and running this week. Being able to spray paint will complete a skill set I’ve been chasing for a while. For me there is “peace of mind” knowing that I have the ability to take a run-down boat that nobody wants, breath life into her, and in turn, set myself free. Having this ability means I don’t need to rely on the system to make copious amounts of money in order to travel the world and make it my home. It’s all part of my (not so evil) minimalist plan :)
I’ve made good friends with Aaron (Irish) and his girlfriend Stephanie (South African) they are on a 1983 Cheoy Lee Golden Wave (Racer/Cruiser (Escape 2)) Nice boat. They are pretty new to the whole cruising thing and have had a bit of bad luck. Their engine is broken and they got hit by lightning, the electric system is fried. I’m trying to give them a hand with some projects & guidance as we both get ready to cross an ocean.
Well my morning coffee is about done, the sun is out and I have about 5 sheets of sandpaper left. I’m off to Panama city (GOD I HATE THE BUS!) tomorrow to buy supplies.

“$25 to hostile”? perhaps you meant “Hostel”?
Hoyt, your right :) Although some of the Hostel managers get pretty hostle if you dont pay them !!! Thanks, where is your boat?
On your BC make the black background C 60 M 40 Y 40 K 100
You also should enlarge the background image a tad for bleed. (on both items if you havnt already)
mak sure you use 300 res for your photoshop file.
Personally, I would not do any of the text in photoshop as it will not be as crisp as it would if done in illustrator or Indesign. But most people except for pros dont notice it.

Thanks joe, I was going with vista print but would like a nice image on my business card.
Does anyone have exp using talcum powder as a fairing filler with epoxy? I cant buy west system 410 microlight here.

Alex,
Wayward Angel is back on the northern gulf coast at Pirates Cove in Orange Beach, Alabama. She now sports a new topside awlgrip paint job and I’m about finished with replacing the rear main seal on my Westerbeke 40 which was scheduled for a weekend job and of course has taken me two months so far. Meanwhile I live vicariously through you. So have lots of fun…………..
HEA
Any micro fiber will work for epoxy, sometimes I just cut up a bunch of glass cloth and mix it in.
Your flyer and card looks real good.
Talcum may act like micro baloons and let water in. Celulose (attic insulation) may work, it’s fiberis if mixed very well may obsorb the epoxy, maybe glass insulation (non itching). Your just looking to fill not so much for strength.
Just a couple of thoughts.
they make a silica filled epoxy that is used in flooring and probably some other applications.
I looked up a little bit of info on a brand. Do your own research dont just take my word for it because I know very little about boats!

Yeah…you do look like a retard in that picture. LOL …….. Just kidding!!!
A nitpick, but I suggest replacing the “&” with the word “and” on the bizness card. All looks very good.
Guys,
Thanks for the info on fillers and my cards. I have found a few apertures with moisture behind the glass on my toe-rail, I’ve had to cut them out and refill/glass them back up, work, work, work. I want to do everything right and there seems to be a lot of debate about easy fairing fillers and water intrusion. Alexseal has a fairing compound I can get here at $100 a gallon and I’m going to bust out another Benjamin, ARRGG!
I spent a few hours helping out my buddy Aaron on his boat, Wow, can a lightning strike take its toll on a sailboat! It makes me rethink how simple I need to keep everything. Not only has he lost his batteries, SSB, Tuner, Vhf’s, sailing electronics, battery monitor, battery charger, and everything else, but you cant trust a stitch of wire on the boat, he really has to start at square one. I have an extra battery selector switch and I’m going to put it on the ground side of my system so I can shut off the ground as well as the positive side of my DC system. I also have a 15′ chain attached to my upper shrowd and p[laced in the water to hopefully keep any possible lightning on the outside of Splendid.
I haven’t had a drop of Alcohol in 4 or 5 days. I’m putting myself into physical & mental training and trying to focus as hard as I can on the task at hand which seems a bit monumental at the moment, but I’m chipping it away. I want out of central & south America next March/April. I love it here and will feel like I’m leaving home again but I really want to be in the sea and get moving.
The vita-mix is making me healthier! I’m milling bean flours to thicken my stews and its really yummy, gives it a creamy texture without the dairy. Why has it taken me nearly 46 years to figure out my body doesn’t like wheat products? Nobody ever said I was the sharpest tool in the shed.
I have found a little time to refinish my guitar. I haven’t played it in years because the machines are shot and I’m trying to find new ones online. I’ve sanded her down and varnished her with marine varnish and she looks AWESOME! She is a vintage Yamaha FG-230 12 string. I’ll post a picture at some point.
Off to P.C. on Monday for a day or two. Hopefully I’ll be spraying paint and filling my new scuba tanks next week :)
Cheers
The brochure looks great. Good eye for composition! I would make the BC pic color.
Alex…a better picture of you? Turn around first……
Ha! I think I have a line on micro-balloons (fairing filler) in Panama city, man that would be great. It is 5:10 am and getting ready for the bus and a two day trek to PC.
dregsfan, what do you mean “make the BC pic color”?
The business card would look better all color, instead of just the logo.
Hey Alex!
Nice flyer and Biz card! You don’t look like a total retard….haha joking!
How are you posting these updates? Satphone? wifi on the boat? come on…. do share!
I just might see you out in the Pacific this Fall! :)
Rick
Rick,
Good to hear from you bro. I use windows live-writer through my 3G internet connection.
I’m in PC at the moment and have been on a scavenger hunt. There is only one place that sells epoxy (not polyester), it was a bear to find and out in an area of PC I don’t really like to be in but I got it. I also managed to find micro balloons and got to the post office. I picked up my new VHF ($80.00 in taxes/shipping), my new little flip camera, a plug cutter set to make bungs, and my hardware to re-rig my main sheet. I also tracked down the pressure regulator and all the plumbing & hoses for the SCUBA/pneumatic system. Still have a lot of running around today, but I’m shooting some paint this week.
If anyone has good tips on shooting paint let me know, I’ve never done it and will be going through the learning curve :)
Cheers.
