Civilization

Well Sam and I are going to take off for Isla Linton tomorrow. We found her a cheap flight on Spirit ($100.00)heading back to the states in a few weeks. I’m going to stage out of Isla Linton or Portobello for the time she is gone and work on my fuel tanks (cleaning), and my little Kubota diesel engine that will become a 12V charging station and run the big fridge compressor. I’ll be putting my big cat pump on the main engine (via belt) and will use it to run a water maker. I’m hoping to get 60 gallons an hour of pure fresh H2O using 2 large membranes. It will all take a bit of time as I’m getting parts for all my projects as I can afford them. We do dream of the day of taking endless showers, especially in these hot latitudes :)

Hey, this is a good time to bring up charters. I’m only asking $1500 a week and there is no time like the present, right…? I’ve got so many people interested in seeing the San Blas but you guys just need to come up with some dates and lock them down. I’m also big on bartering so if you have any old SCUBA gear collecting dust in you garage, a water maker (even if it is just good for parts), let me know. I’m all about trading. You know I got my last water maker by trading it for a max prop that I had that didn’t fit on Namaste. Man I’d love a  3 blade max prop also. My other big project is building a real main sheet system. Right now I just use 2 fiddle blocks connected to the mizzen mast via a strap. The down side is all the load of the main tries to pull the mizzen off the deck. Before we venture out into the Pacific or Atlantic I want a better system.

The first charter money that comes in is going to a new camera package. I’ve decided that I want to shoot a real documentary (for television, and for sale) on the indigoes people of Panama. I’m looking at the new SLR technology like the Canon XTi2 and getting some zeiss glass for it (http://photography.bhinsights.com/content/zeiss-cp2-new-cine-lenses-dslr.html). Using an SLR is really exciting for me as I’m all about lenses. I shot my last films with cheap cameras and in standard definition. I want to produce the next film in HD and actually use a tripod. I can take some good looking video if I put my mind to it. I also need to build a real PC (editing station), I’ve had it with laptops. I go through a laptop every 14-16 months. The one I’m on now is losing keyboard support. It would be a lot easier to change a keyboard, motherboard, or whatever.

I’m hoping for some wind tomorrow, but i doubt it. I’ll most likely have to burn 12 gallons of diesel, it is what it is.

Cheers from paradise.

Sail far and live slowly.

  1. Alex, if you get to Portobello say hi to our friends Les and Sarah on Wilde Mathilde. Les is a diesel mechanic and welder. A good guy to know and really good people.

  2. Hey Alex,

I’d love to do some sailing with you when it’s cold up here in Minnesota and your barter comments got me to thinking….My son and I do a lot of video work with my business. Training stuff, promotional stuff on YouTube. We even have NBC looking at doing a reality show based on my truck driving school. Anyway, my thought was if you shot your video on digital format, send it to us on a memory card, we could do the editing for you here in the states and then you do not need all of that equipment on board. I just bought a new Sony Laptop dedicated just for editing and we use Adobe Premere software so we have the equipment and my son has the time for a project like that. Heck, even if we never did connect for a cruie it would be fun to edit for you. I love your first two projects and it would be a priviledge to help.

Hey Alex, WE ARE DOING IT!!! We cut the docklines a week ago, (my Mom has half and I have half) and we have made the turn to the east under the Mackinaw Bridge (longest suspension bridge in the world) and soon will make the turn SOUTH through Lake Huron and beyond !!!

Thanks again for your inspiration, I can feel the freedom already.

  6. Hey Alex, let’s barter.
Doreen the kids and I left Odessa on the hard in Saint Maarten and are doing a summer stint in Paris to build up the cash. We have a full HD edit station onboard and all the gear you could want… Canon D7’s, lovely lenses, Sony EX1, camera support… even a gyro for lovely stable shots while sailing. We have some Hero’s coming down for the wet stuff, when we get back to Odessa late October. Jose (my DP partner) is making the move in the right direction… getting rid of the house and testing this winter in Salvador and Costa Rica, where he shoots commercials… I almost have him and his wife and kids buying a boat :) We can shoot with you over the winter if you’re still in the Caribbean… we have some documentary work and always looking for new things to do.

Let me know… three more months and counting the days until we get back to it.

email us… we’ll be in Saint Maarten 25th October 2010 and have 4 to 8 weeks to put the new rig on Odessa, then south to shake down.
