Cartagena: Preparing To Leave

I got a ticket back to the States on July, 28th, and the only thing I’m looking forward to is seeing my family.

I thought living out of the States would subject me to certain hardships but all the foods I thought I’d miss, I don’t miss. In fact, the beef here has no steroids, the fruits & vegetables are organic, and of superior quality, the coffee is.., well.., you know, this is coffee country.

What I like more then anything is the pace. I’m usually wound up like a top bordering on cardiac arrest=85, do, do , do, go, go, go, faster, faster, faster. I’ll stroll through the cobble stone streets in the rain here, duck into a café, and read the day away.

I thought it odd when I checked into Cartagena that the agent didn’t ask me for his $60.00 fee up front, in fact, he didn’t come to collect his money for almost 2 weeks. In his broken English he let me know that if I didn’t have it, I could take some time if I needed too.

At Club Nautico one pays their bar & restaurant bills on Wednesdays, it really nice not having to open my wallet for every soda or bag of ice. I paid for my first month’s dockage at Club Nautico in advance $0.25 a foot (very reasonable). I’m going back to the States for nearly 3 months to work, and my funds are exhausted. I asked the club manager if I could pay the remainder upon my return. He turned to me=85, I was expecting a long speech on “Club Policy”, but he just smiled and said “no problem”.

It’s hard for me to explain in words but its very “human” here. Most of these people only make .50 cents an hour, yet they have great attitudes & smiles. Don’t get me wrong, you can still get robbed as you can anywhere, but there’s a very human aspect to the chemistry here. I also like living in a society without so many laws. Many of the cars are missing a headlight or both, there’s a helmet law, but it’s not enforced. It would be strange to actually stop at a stop sign, and driving with a beer is not uncommon. There are plenty of police & military about, but they’re looking for the real bad guys, not citizens breaking a minor detail in the system. And check this out, THERE ARE NO METER MAIDS, OR PARKING METERS, YEEEEHHHHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, sorry, I got a little bitter living in Los Angeles being harassed by those terrible little people, in their want-to-be police uniforms, creeping around in those ridiculous little cars. I think I’m getting off the subject=85, anyway.

I’m falling in love with Cartagena. When I return I want to explore some of the Columbian interior and the Amazon River, and yes, I’ll drag you along with me. The next episode (Settling in #11), will be posted shortly.

Adios my friends.
