sailing Bahamas

Wow, what a night! The wind started blowing a gale around 11pm.

I don't worry so much about dragging because of our 85lb Supreme. A boat next to us was getting quite close and I was worried about hitting. I got in the dink and drove over to him. Looking at our GPS I noticed we were holding firm.

The guy was having problems with his anchor and could not get it up. His windlass failed and he had lines on the chain running back to the winches. It took him about an hour to get his anchor up but when he did we started dragging. I looked and Sam "no way we are dragging"! Well as it turns out he had caught my anchor with his and pulled it up. The situation was deceiving as the current was against the wind and my anchor was 90 feet behind me.

Our boats came quite close to hitting. I'm not so worried about hitting either because our finish isn't so fine and Splendid is a tank. but he had a beautiful finish and freaked a bit. I saw the guy anchor too close to us from the shore about mid day, but by the time I got back it all looked okay. The reality was he dropped his hook on us. Sam and I got the anchor up and found a different spot away from all the dragging boats and excitement.

The weather has not been so good. I hope the cold fronts die out soon as we want to head south. I think they fizzle out in March/April but we will see. Until then I'll be looking for anchorages protected from the South, West, and North. When the trades fill in we will head for Jamaica and Panama.

Put an empty water bottle on your anchor, so other boaters will know where it is

The forecast for NE Florida is cold (high 50s) until next Saturday when it reaches the 60s. Looks like one more week of winter and Spring will be arriving.

Sounds like your your doing the same thing you did the first go a round. Try the eastern carib. REALLY cool!!! Were in Nelson's harbour Antigua. This is the main port in the carib for the British Navy in 1784. Check it out.
