This the season here in Petoskey Michigan. The time of year when they light the Christmas tree in the park downtown, and when we do the BEAN POT. I built a big 48 gal. pot about 15 years ago from a brand new Peterbuilt tank, and have been doing this tradition ever since. I have a big tri-pod of cedar poles and a fire pit for under the pot. It takes about 2 hours till it gets to a full rolling boil, then after an hour or 2 of boiling, it is time to start passing it out. We average 500-600 cups of soup.
My Uncle and some of his friends do another pot on the opposite side of the park. They have a big cast iron pot, and they have been doing theirs for 12 years longer than we have, we are the next generation of soup cookers as my uncle and his friends are in their 70's. We learned to make it from them in the years before I built my own pot.
The local merchants provide all the ingredients, we donate our time and cook the soup, all handed out free to the public during the open house, tree lighting ceremony.
The merchants hand out samples of food and stuff, and some cocktails too. The award winning Petoskey High School Steel Drum Band plays just down a block from where we set up our rig.
Lots more entertainment going on around town too. The weather is always a factor, but we just deal with it, rain, snow or what ever. We also have a small bonfire next to us so you can warm up and have some soup.
The event is Fri. Dec. 4th. so I will be posting some you tube video a few days later at my channel blowinganddrifting
So this is not really a "random" act of kindness but just kindness.
Merry Christmas, Dean
