sailinf destination in february

 Hello all,

Winter is coming up and I am living on a Hunter 25.5 in a lake in Tn., Gets real cold here in the winter and I just realized I have enough PTO time to take at least a month off. So I am thinking of throwing the boat on a trailer and heading south. First thought of the Keys or Fla. west coast. But looking at regulations is taking the fun out of it. I just want to creep along, fish and pretend to be free for a few weeks without crowds and bullshit and not freeze my ass off. Is it as bad down there as it seems? Anybody have other suggestions? Or even how to really get started. I am a minimalist and let me go anywhere without folks and i thrive. Is there anywhere down there like the old days. when you could sail in buy what you want, sail away , anchor, swim naked and not bother anybody else?....  I'm going somewhere, just not sure where yet.   Love to hear all your suggestions.     Wade

Re: sailinf destination in february

I would give you this little bit of advice,  go way south, I have spent several winters in Daytona, St. Augustine, Jacksonville area and it gets COLD there.  There are some really nice days but feb. is useually cold and with a chilly breeze.  Head on down to below 1/2 way at least!!  We call it "the other Florida".  Can't really give you any info on just where to go to find what you are looking for but someone out there can.

Enjoy, Dean

Re: sailinf destination in february

If you're staying on the West Coast I'd recommend getting below Tampa Bay. Even this far south it still gets cold. The keys have some excellent cruising, though the prices (and the 10% sales tax!) can be pretty steep.

There was recently a law passed in FL protecting cruising sailors rights to anchor and stay for extended periods of time. So long as you have your registration numbers and a working anchor light you should be fine.

Look up the "Shark River" near Cape Sable. It's supposed to be an excellent remote winter anchorage in the Everglades National Park. It's also about a days run down (marked) Channel 5 to the Keys, with one of the few bridges tall enough to let a sailboat pass to the Atlantic side (Hawks Channel) at the end.

Re: sailinf destination in february

Yes, I lived in FWB and Destin in the 80's and it can get brisk. i do have friends there and it is drawing me. Probably a little scared to go off alone and not like where I wind up. It is still not decided though. Still hopeing for more feed back and thanks for replying.  Wade

Re: sailinf destination in february

If you can step your mast without a crane, just keep on trailering to a different spot till you find one you like.  The beauty of trailering.

Later, Dean
