That's what you had, and it's what I need. I just need to get Wifey 'on board' with it. I have a good job that I like pretty well. I just work, way too, many hours (55-65/wk). I could easily save 20-30k a year if I bought a liveaboard and ditched the mortgage.
I don't have car notes. Just all the peripheral crap that society deems necessary. Cable TV, various insurance, taxes on EVERYTHING, etc.
In just a few years I could save enough to go cruising for quite a long, time!

I read a blog recently of a family of 4. Mom, Dad, daughter (12 yrs), son (10 yrs) They have been living aboard for the past 4 yrs cruising around Mexico and such. They post a montly expense spreadsheet on their blog. Includes gas, food, repairs etc... They quote a good month is between $1100 and $1200. They had a few $1500, only due to mechanical reports or similar. But tend to average about $1000, sometimes less.
What I understand, they rent out their home in California, which covers their basic costs of cruising. The wife does canvas repairs when in port, and the husband markets some windmill generator thingie. But the bulk of their income is from the rental of their house.
